Chapter 1 - The Wingbeat of Destiny

It was a bright morning in San Alvera City, and the sun shone brightly off the warehouse roof of Bandots Merchandising Company.

In a cramped, dusty office sat a man whose sleepy eyes spoke of lethargy and fatigue.

That impression, however, was so wrong!

Ricky Bolton leaned back in his squeaky chair, eyes closed. Behind him, his coworker Marissa let out a shrill scream!

"Aaahhhh!"

A fly floated in through the window and landed on a half-eaten donut on her desk. As she tried to shoo it away the fly dive-bombed her face then zipped towards the office door!

Before the fly could make it out the door…

SPLAT!

Its corpse fell to the ground like a meteor falling from the sky.

With a cool heroic kind of vibe Ricky let out an exhale as he pushed back his hair. The fly swatter in his hand was buzzing with electricity.

One motion, lightning fast!

And that fly was dead.

"Haha! There he goes again! That's the Fly Swatting Hero of the billing department, giving us more of that sweet exterminator energy!"

Tim Mentos, better known to his 230 followers as Minster-Mental, swiveled quickly in Ricky's direction, smartphone in hand, the camera already rolling.

Tim was a self-proclaimed motivational vlogger, but mostly he was Ricky's part-time hype man, and the full-time chaos engine of the department.

Ricky sighed. "Tim, do you have to film everything? We're at work, not in an action movie."

Marissa, who had the look of someone traumatized by a fly, was wrapping up the donut that caused all the drama to get rid of it.

"You've saved my life again Ricky," she chimed in with a laugh. "You are a hero, even if you don't think so."

Ricky waved her off and went back to his desk, his chair squeaking as he sat.

Tim, who sat at the desk across from his wheeled over, the camera of his smartphone pointed at Ricky's face.

"Now tell the audience bro, how does it feel to rid the world of one more disease-ridden menace?"

Ricky glanced at the tiny fly corpse on the dusty warehouse floor.

"Feels… tidy."

"Haha! And there you have it…."

Tim's voice faded into background noise as Ricky brushed him off to get back to his work.

News Broadcast – Channel 9:

"BREAKING NEWS: GIANT MUTANT FLIES TERRORIZE CITIZENS DOWNTOWN!

Experts warn these buzzing brutes carry everything from dysentery to emotional damage!

Authorities urge citizens to stay indoors and avoid waving their hands, it only makes them angrier!"

That day, the city descended into madness.

Mutant flies – the size of mice – had begun dive-bombing in the produce section of the nearby open market. Sprays failed, traps broke, and local pest control units fled screaming.

Something sinister was abuzz.

And for Ricky, destiny's wings hummed louder than ever.

As fate would have it, he was the type of man that could hear every single wingbeat!
