Chapter 25 - Abandoned Ship

[ Late Morning, Day 2 - The Dried Riverbed ]

The tires of the Armored Rover crushed the cracked, parched earth, the sound of rubber grinding against dry soil echoing in the silence.

The atmosphere down here was vastly different from the highway above. It was a desolate world of dull browns and grays, stretching endlessly. Heat haze shimmered above the ground, making the distant horizon twist and distort like an oil painting that hadn't dried.

The riverbanks, once lush, were now steep cliffs of compacted dirt, with massive tree roots dangling down like the tentacles of dead krakens. But the most arresting sight was the "Ship Graveyard."

Giant ocean liners and cargo ships lay beached in the dust, stranded alone. Red rust had devoured their steel hulls, leaving them pockmarked and skeletal. The wind howled through the gaping holes in the metal, sounding like the wailing ghosts of long-dead sailors. The shadows cast by these behemoths were long and eerie, offering no comfort.

"Look at the scale of them..." Philip gazed out the window in awe. "Destroyers... freighters... Now they're just condos for rats and cockroaches."

"Let's hope we find something more valuable than rat droppings," Murphy drove slowly, navigating the old river channel.

Beep... Beep... Beep...

A signal chirped from Philip's eyepiece. He swiped at the holographic display on his wrist, rapidly typing commands for the Seeker Orb patrolling above the Rover.

"Murphy, stop the car! The Orb detected high-density metal... to the right, inside that container ship."

Philip zoomed in on the display. "Scan confirms 'Military Supply Crate.' Vacuum seals are intact... It should be high-grade rations."

"Nice catch, Hawkeye," Murphy steered the Rover alongside the rusted hull of the giant ship. "I'll cover you. You handle the lock.

Murphy stepped out of the vehicle. His boots sank slightly into the soft earth. The air down here was heavy, humid, and smelled faintly of rotting vegetation and sulfur.

While Philip was using his laser cutter on the container's lock, the Seeker Orb hovering overhead suddenly shifted its light from calm blue to a flashing red.

"Murphy! Watch out! Underground!" Philip shouted the warning without turning around, his eyes glued to the scanner. "The Orb is picking up vibrations! Three... no, five contacts!"

Bloop... Bloop...

The mud around Murphy began to bubble and boil like lava.

SPLAT!

Black mud sprayed into the air! Monstrous creatures erupted from beneath the surface.

They were "Mire Stalkers"—mutated hybrids resembling a cross between a crab and a spider, the size of motorcycles. Their carapaces were jagged and covered in barnacles, their legs long and hairy, and their front pincers were massive, sharp enough to shear through steel.

"HISS!!!!!!"

They hissed aggressively, viscous green slime dripping from mandibles filled with needle-like teeth.

"What the hell are these ugly bastards..." Murphy slowly drew the Tactical Ninjato from the scabbard on his back. Click...

"Philip! Stay back!"

"They have heavy armor on their backs!" Philip yelled, piloting the Seeker Orb to swoop down. "Weak points are the leg joints and the underbelly! The Orb will paint the targets!"

The Seeker Orb fired a thin red laser beam, illuminating the knee joint of the leading Stalker.

"Got it!" Murphy lunged forward.

The giant crab swung its massive pincer. Murphy slid to the left, dodging by a hair's breadth, and swung his sword in a fluid counter-arc, aiming exactly where the laser pointed.

Slash!

The leg was severed instantly! The creature shrieked and collapsed, losing its balance. Murphy didn't hesitate; he flipped the blade and thrust it upward into its soft underbelly.

Thwack!

"Second one! Behind you, six o'clock!" Philip warned over the comms.

The Seeker Orb flew in, unleashing a blinding strobe light into the second creature's many eyes to disorient it.

Murphy used that split second to spin around, swinging his blade in a wide, horizontal arc.

CLANG!

The high-carbon steel sparked against the pincer, but the momentum and sharpness won out. The claw was sheared clean off.

"This sword is the real deal..." Murphy smirked. "I don't even need to use my kinetic push. It cuts through bone like butter."

He dismantled them one by one with calm precision, with Philip acting as his "Eye in the Sky," warning of flankers and highlighting weak spots. It was perfect teamwork between the Warrior and the Navigator.

As the last Stalker lay twitching in the mud, Murphy flicked the green blood off his blade and sheathed it.

The stench of their insides was overpowering, sharp and chemical.

"Clear," Murphy signaled.

Philip emerged, carrying a heavy crate of supplies with a grin.

"That was awesome, Murphy! And... how did the Orb perform?"

"It was perfect," Murphy walked over and patted his brother on the shoulder. "If you hadn't marked those targets, I might have lost a chunk of my ass... By the way, are these crabs edible?"

Murphy nudged a carcass with his boot.

"Lots of meat on them."

"Don't even think about it," Philip shook his head, wrinkling his nose. "Smell that? Sulfur and rot. They're toxic. One bite and your stomach would probably dissolve."

"Damn shame," Murphy grumbled, helping lift the crate into the Rover.

[ Evening - The Last Light & The Long Shadow ]

They drove out of the ship graveyard, heading toward a rising slope where the riverbed met the city outskirts.

The sun was setting, casting a blood-orange glow across the dry valley. The skyscrapers of the capital on the high bank looked like the blackened ribs of a giant skeleton against the dying light.

Murphy parked the Rover on a high mound to set up camp for the night.

From this vantage point... they had a clear view of tomorrow's destination.

A few kilometers away, blocking the main entrance to the city...

The "Fallen Giant King Statue" lay face down on the highway, toppled as if by the hand of god. One of its massive arms draped across the road, creating a tunnel of absolute darkness.

And behind the statue... stood the towering, formidable City Walls.

"Tomorrow, we climb the bank and head straight for that," Murphy pointed his sword toward the statue. "It looks too quiet... like the calm before a storm."

Philip set the Seeker Orb to patrol mode around the vehicle.

"Get some sleep, Murphy. Tomorrow, we finally enter Eden Capital... I hope the answers from The Core are really there."

Murphy sat against the wheel, cracking open a can of the military beef stew. It tasted salty and rich.

"Eden... Just wait. We're coming."
