Chapter 25: The Ghost in the Blueprints

[System Notification: Emotional Status — 'Hollow' | Location: The Blue Shutter Patisserie (Under Construction)]

I didn't drive home. I couldn't face the empty apartment or the "I love you" note on the pillow. Instead, I found myself back at the site. The scent of sawdust and wet cement usually calmed me, but today, it felt like the smell of a half-finished life.

The site was quiet. Most of the crew had gone for lunch, leaving only the skeletal frame of the kitchen and the blue shutters leaning against a pile of bricks.

I sat on a crate of tiles, the silver ring on my finger catching the dim afternoon light. I felt like a fraud. I was the "Lead Architect" of a dream built on a nightmare of blackmail.

"You're late," a voice rumbled from the shadows of the back room.

Arjun stepped out, wiping grease from his hands with a rag. He looked at me, his sharp eyes immediately catching the redness in mine and the way I was clutching my bag. He didn't ask what happened. He didn't make a joke. He just walked over and sat on the crate next to me.

"That wasn't a 'site-survey' face," he said softly. "That was a 'my world just imploded' face."

I let out a shaky breath, the tears I'd been holding back since the hospital finally spilling over. "I think I just ended it, Arjun. I think I pushed the only person who ever fought for me away because I couldn't handle the way he fought."

The Comfort of a Stranger

Arjun didn't try to touch me, which I appreciated. He just leaned back, looking up at the exposed rafters.

"Ishaan is a good man, Meera," Arjun said, surprising me. "He's a bit of a territorial idiot, sure. But I saw the way he looked at you when I was trying to rile him up. He doesn't just love you; he's anchored to you."

"He lied to me," I sobbed, wiping my face. "He blackmailed Julian. He used illegal data. He's a doctor, Arjun! He could lose everything if someone finds out."

"And he did it for you," Arjun countered. He turned to look at me, his expression uncharacteristically serious. "Look, in my line of work, we deal with foundations. Sometimes, the ground is soft. Sometimes, the soil is toxic. If you want to build something that lasts, you have to dig deep and get your hands dirty to clear the site. Maybe Ishaan just saw the toxicity in Julian and decided to clear the site so you could finally build your bakery."

I looked at Arjun, surprised by the depth in the "rugged contractor" I had once crushed on. "You think he was right?"

"I think he was desperate," Arjun corrected. "And I think you're right to be mad. But Meera... don't let the 'perfect' be the enemy of the 'good.' Most people wouldn't even lift a brick for you. He moved a mountain."

He reached out then, giving my shoulder a supportive squeeze—the kind of squeeze a brother or a teammate would give. "If you need to cry, cry. I've got a whole roll of industrial paper towels in the truck. But don't stay on this crate forever. This floor needs leveling, and I can't do it if the architect is a puddle."

The Shadow at the Entrance

I leaned my head against Arjun's shoulder for a brief second, just a moment of shared human comfort in the middle of the wreckage. "Thanks, Arjun. I needed that."

"Anytime, Shadow Architect," he murmured.

"Am I interrupting the 'backup plan'?"

The voice was cold, sharp, and came from the entrance of the site.

I bolted upright. Ishaan was standing there. He was still in his hospital scrubs, his white coat gone, looking exhausted and raw. He had a bandage on his hand—probably from a slip during surgery or a moment of frustration.

He wasn't looking at me. He was looking at Arjun's hand, which was still inches away from my shoulder.

"Ishaan," I gasped, standing up. "I thought you were in surgery."

"I finished early," he said, his voice devoid of emotion. "I came to apologize. I came to tell you that I realized why you were so angry and that I wanted to make it right."

He let out a short, bitter laugh, looking around the dusty room.

"But it looks like you've already found someone who provides a much 'cleaner' foundation than I do. My mistake. I'll leave you to your site survey."

He turned on his heel and walked out into the bright Mumbai sun, leaving the blueprints fluttering in the wake of his exit.

[System Notification: Relationship Status — FLATLINING | New Conflict: The Misunderstanding]

[Author's Corner]

NOOOO! 😱 The timing! The classic "He saw them together" trope! Ishaan came to apologize, but he saw Arjun comforting Meera and totally lost it!

Status Update:

Ishaan: Convincing himself he's been replaced.

Meera: Paralyzed by the double-blow of guilt and heartbreak.

Arjun: Just accidentally became the "other man."
