Chapter 9 - Public Accounting.

The academy convened at noon.

Not for training.

Not for trials.

But for clarification.

A notice had been posted across every major courtyard:

All outer and inner disciples are to assemble

Subject: Review of Observation Trial Records

Speculation exploded.

"Review?"

"Did something go wrong?"

"Is this about Chen Yuan?"

Chen Yuan arrived early and stood quietly among the outer disciples.

The system interface shimmered faintly.

Event Triggered

Outcome: Irreversible

Maintain composure

On the raised platform, elders took their seats.

Instructor Lu stood front and center.

So did Elder Zhao.

That alone drew attention.

Instructor Lu raised his hand.

"Due to recent concerns regarding the fairness of the Inner-Court Observation Trial," he announced, "the academy has conducted a full public audit."

A wave of murmurs followed.

"Public audit?"

"That's rare…"

Instructor Lu continued calmly, "All trial records, mission logs, and resource allocations were reviewed."

He gestured.

A projection flared into existence above the plaza.

It showed Spirit Mist Valley entry logs.

Time stamps.

Cultivation levels.

Duration.

Chen Yuan's name appeared.

Unaltered.

Clear.

Then the Mirror Boundary recordings played.

Key moments highlighted.

The reflection dissolving.

The stability metrics.

The final evaluation.

"Outstanding," Instructor Lu said evenly.

Eyes turned.

Whispers sharpened.

Then Instructor Lu's tone changed.

"However," he continued, "we also identified irregular procedural interference following the trial."

The projection shifted.

Internal disciplinary requests.

Administrative flags.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Zhao Ming

The crowd erupted.

"What?"

"He interfered?"

"That's not allowed!"

Instructor Lu did not pause.

"These requests were submitted without sufficient evidence," he said. "And were endorsed without proper review."

Slowly, the projection highlighted the approving authority.

Elder Zhao

The plaza went silent.

Elder Zhao's face stiffened.

"This is misleading," he said sharply. "I acted within my authority."

Instructor Lu turned to face him.

"Authority does not override transparency," he replied.

He turned back to the crowd.

"As a result, the academy has reached the following decisions."

The jade slip glowed.

"First: The suspension of Chen Yuan's inner-court recommendation is revoked immediately."

The crowd exploded.

Some cheered.

Some stared in disbelief.

Chen Yuan remained still.

"Second," Instructor Lu continued, "Outer Disciple Zhao Ming is found to have abused influence to obstruct a fellow disciple."

Zhao Ming's face drained of color.

"I did nothing wrong!" he shouted. "I only—"

"Silence," an elder snapped.

Instructor Lu went on.

"Effective immediately, Zhao Ming is removed from the Observation Rankings."

Gasps.

Removal was worse than a low rank.

It erased recognition entirely.

"And," Instructor Lu added, voice steady, "he is barred from inner-court consideration for one full year."

Zhao Ming staggered.

One year.

In cultivation terms, it was devastating.

Zhao Ming turned desperately to his uncle.

"Uncle—!"

Elder Zhao did not look at him.

His gaze was fixed forward.

Then Instructor Lu delivered the final blow.

"Third," he said, "Elder Zhao is formally reprimanded for conflict of interest."

The words were measured.

But the meaning was absolute.

Status lost.

Reputation stained.

Not destroyed.

But permanently cracked.

The platform fell silent.

Instructor Lu turned to Chen Yuan.

"Outer Disciple Chen Yuan," he said, "step forward."

Chen Yuan did.

"Your performance and conduct have been verified," Instructor Lu continued. "Do you have anything to say?"

Chen Yuan paused.

Then bowed respectfully.

"I only wish to cultivate properly," he said. "Nothing more."

The simplicity of the answer struck harder than any insult.

The crowd's perception shifted completely.

Zhao Ming stood frozen.

Around him, students stepped away instinctively.

Sun Hao and Wei Liang did not meet his eyes.

He had been exposed.

Not defeated in combat.

But stripped of legitimacy.

That was worse.

Later that evening, Chen Yuan received a final system message.

Suppression Resolved

Public Trust Increased

Hidden Reward Unlocked

A soft glow enveloped him.

Trait Acquired:

Clear Conscience

Administrative interference resistance increased

Reputation-based penalties reduced

Chen Yuan exhaled slowly.

This time, he allowed himself a small, genuine smile.

Above Qinghe Spirit Academy, fate adjusted once more.

Chen Yuan was no longer merely rising.

He had arrived.
