Chapter 30: The Unfolding Storm
"This guy…"
Minato didn't press the attack. Instead, he stopped a measured five meters from Shinra, his electric-blue eyes scanning, analyzing, searching for the smallest crack in the other boy's flawless defense.
His recent flurry, while not a huge drain on his impressive chakra, had cost him stamina. Shinra, in contrast, stood perfectly still, his breathing even, his face a mask of calm boredom, as if he were waiting for a bus, not fighting for the title of Chief Student.
Off-stage, Shinra's fan club was in hysterics, a few even swooning from the sheer intensity. The watching instructors could only shake their heads in silent awe.
In this clash of wills, the momentum seemed to have shifted decisively. Minato's initiative was fading.
Shinra simply stood there, hands loose at his sides, watching Minato with the detached calm of a master observing a promising student. It was an attitude that said, Bring all your techniques and tricks. They won't matter.
"Dammit! There has to be a flaw!" Minato's mind raced, but he found none. Worse, he could feel his own fighting spirit, his momentum, beginning to wane under that oppressive, unshakeable presence. The boy was a mountain, and for the first time in his life, Minato felt like he was hitting a wall he couldn't climb, tunnel through, or go around.
"No more waiting!"
Minato's expression hardened. If he let this stalemate continue, his spirit would be crushed completely. He had to act.
Swish-swish-swish!
Shuriken again. But different. His hands became a controlled blur of motion.
As the first wave of projectiles neared Shinra, they multiplied. Shadows split from shadows, three becoming six, six becoming twelve, twelve exploding into a veritable storm of whirling metal that blotted out the sky, a deafening, all-encompassing downpour aimed at a single point.
"Shadow Shuriken Technique!"
"His talent is monstrous!"
"A pity… even this won't be enough to beat that monster…"
The spectators recognized the high-level technique, their voices a mix of admiration and resigned pity. They all knew it. This alone wouldn't win.
Minato knew it too.
This wasn't the finish. It was the setup.
As expected, Shinra's response was the same—a single, contemptuous punch forward.
BOOM.
The tremor force erupted. The storm of shuriken froze in mid-air for a split second, then shattered into harmless metallic dust.
But Shinra's brow furrowed slightly. A genius like Minato wouldn't waste energy on a mere feint.
His instincts screamed.
A fraction of a second later, the air behind him compressed, a sharp whistle cutting through the aftermath of the shuriken storm.
"Wind Release: Vacuum Wave!"
Razor-sharp blades of compressed air, invisible and deadly, sliced towards his back. The timing was impeccable, the angle perfect. There was no time to turn and counter-punch.
Shinra began to pivot, muscles coiling to meet the new threat head-on.
But then—
Another presence. Behind him. Different.
The audience gasped.
"A clone?!"
"No! That one's forming seals!"
"That's… that's the Shadow Clone Technique!"
"A B-rank technique?! From a student?!"
The arena erupted. The Shadow Clone Technique, a jutsu that created tangible, thinking duplicates, was far beyond academy level.
Minato, the real Minato who had launched the Wind Release, wasn't done. The shadow clone beside him had already completed its own intricate sequence of seals.
"Fire Release: Phoenix Flower Jutsu!"
"Wind Release: Great Breakthrough!"
Two C-rank techniques erupted simultaneously from the clone's position. A bloom of fiery projectiles met a roaring gale of wind.
The elements fused.
Wind fanned the flames; flames rode the wind.
The result was not two separate attacks, but a single, cataclysmic Firestorm—a roaring tsunami of orange and red that filled half the ring, heat distorting the air, its roar drowning out all other sound. It descended upon Shinra, who now seemed like a lone, tiny figure before a raging, elemental apocalypse.
In an instant, the audience's shock turned to pure, unadulterated awe.
"Monstrous… absolutely monstrous!"
"A B-rank Shadow Clone, two C-rank ninjutsu, and a D-rank… in a seamless combo… is he really just a student?!"
"Too… too strong!"
Even Hiruzen Sarutobi and Danzo leaned forward, their eyes wide. This wasn't just power; this was art. A masterful demonstration of combat psychology, timing, and chakra control. From the Shadow Shuriken as a dazzling distraction, to the hidden Wind Release as the first true strike, to the Shadow Clone executing the devastating elemental fusion…
Namikaze Minato was pushing the very definition of a "genius" to its breaking point. He had woven a tapestry of destruction with flawless, breathtaking skill.
The storm was here. And Shinra stood directly in its path.
