Chapter 64 - Unnamed

Miss Melissa returned to her cabin and shut the door behind her. A few seconds later, the curtain by her window moved and I knew she was there, watching. She stood by the glass like a guard, making sure no one disobeyed her and brought me a cloth or something to eat. Her eyes moved from one student to another, daring anyone to show me kindness.

No one did.

They were all afraid of her and whatever punishment she would give. Even those who felt sorry for me kept their heads down and walked past as if I did not exist. It hurt more than the cold. It told me clearly that I was on my own.

Mr. Frost had not agreed with her choice. I saw it in his face. His jaw was tight and his brows were drawn together, but after saying a few words he gave up. He turned and walked back to his room, angry, speaking under his breath. I could not hear what he said, but I knew it was not good. Still, he left. And I was left standing there.
