Thunder cracked across the sky. The sound shook the trees and rolled through my chest. Lightning flashed and turned his face white like a ghost. He looked angry. He looked cold. His eyes were red, and his whole body was shaking.

"Fuck off," he said again, but his voice was not as strong as before.

I did not argue. I did not ask him to repeat it. I grabbed his wrist tighter and pulled him forward. The rain came down so hard it felt like stones hitting our skin. The ground was mud. Thick, heavy mud that sucked at our boots and tried to pull us down.

He fought me for a few steps. He tried to pull his hand away. He cursed at me in one long string of words that almost made me laugh even though this was not funny. Then his foot slipped. He nearly fell flat on his back. I caught him by his arm and dragged him upright again.

"Let go of me," he snapped.

"No."
