Chapter 30 - Promise

Jay's POV

The words hit me like a fist. "He's alive, but…" The doctor hesitated, eyes soft with pity. "He's in a coma. We've done everything we can for now. The next few days will be critical."

The ground tilted beneath me. I nodded numbly, but her voice had already faded under the weight of that single word — coma.

They let us see him briefly. The room was dim, the steady beep of the monitor slicing through the silence. Keifer lay still, pale and fragile against the white sheets. I reached for his hand — cold but warm enough to pretend — and held on like I could keep him tethered here.

Keigan stood frozen at the foot of the bed, eyes darting between his brother and the machines. Keiren took one shaky step forward and whispered, "He looks like he's just sleeping…"

I swallowed hard. "Yeah," I said quietly. "Just sleeping."

After they left, I called the only people who needed to know — Wolves, Section E. No one else could find out, not yet.

When Wolves arrived, the air shifted. They didn't ask questions, didn't speak. Just stood in a silent circle around Keifer's bed, heads bowed.

"We keep this between us," I said finally. My voice cracked, but the command still held. "No rumours, no leaks. As far as anyone knows, Keifer's dead. The Onyx is forever gone. Got it?"

Wolves nodded, one by one. Not daring to question it. Keigan and Kieren stood close, clutching each other. They looked so small in that moment, and I hated the helplessness that clenched my chest. Everyone left leaving only me.

I looked back at Keifer — his chest rising, falling, fragile as candlelight tears fell from my eyes.

I pressed my palms against the edge of the bed, my breath hitched . His skin was ice cold beneath my fingertips.

"You promised me," I whispered, leaning closer until my forehead touched the back of his hand. "You promised you'd never leave me again." My voice broke, every word shattering into quiet sobs.

The room blurred, salt stinging my eyes. I shook him weakly, desperate. "Please, Keifer… wake up. I can't do this without you." My voice rose, trembling between anger and pleading. "Don't you dare leave me now. Not after everything."

The monitor kept its steady rhythm, the only answer he gave me. The sound cut through the ache in my chest like glass. I wanted to rip the wires out, scream until the world broke open, but all I could do was press my face against his arm and sob until my throat burned.

I turned to Keifer, brushing a strand of hair from his forehead. "Sleep for now," I whispered. "But when you wake up…" I forced a trembling smile. "When you wake up, it's our turn."

The light from the monitors flickered across his face, painting him in soft blues and whites. I pressed a kiss to his knuckles and whispered one last, broken promise: "I'll keep your world safe until you come back to me. And if you don't… I'll burn theirs."
