Chapter 65 - 65. Battle

Jubilife Pokemon Center

"Ding-a-ling-ling—"

As the exam bell rang, Wayne began his test.

Compared to the Intermediate assessment, the written test for the Advanced assessment included more research on Pokemon ecology and regional forms.

Alolan Vulpix's type changed to _____ due to environmental adaptation.

Common reasons for delayed development in Turtwig include: nutritional imbalance, insufficient light, and certain genetic defects.

Alolan Exeggutor's type is _____, and its extremely long neck is for _____, adapting to compete with tall trees in a _____ environment.

Case Study Question:

An Onix residing in Oreburgh Coal Mine suddenly lost its appetite. Please analyze the possible reasons based on the picture, list at least 3 points, and propose feasible suggestions.

The Oreburgh Coal Mine in the picture showed visible pollutants, which was an obvious clue.

Reasons: high-temperature environment leading to dehydration, insufficient mineral intake, pollutants in the coal mine causing loss of appetite...

Feasible suggestions: supplement with calcium and iron mineral powder mixed feed, regularly spray cooling mist, relocate it to a cooler area.

Breeding Plan Design Question:

Design a full-cycle breeding plan for a Gible.

Good heavens, a giveaway question?!

Wayne answered from four perspectives: nutrition stage, move training, evolution preparation, and endurance training.

The final major question examined the impact of urban expansion and human activities on the survival environment of Pokemon.

Wayne was still the first to finish his paper, scoring 91 points.

"This assessment was too difficult."

"Who would know how to raise a Gible?"

"Who knows about Alolan Exeggutor..."

Most of the material they had memorized was related to Sinnoh region Pokemon.

No one expected this assessment would actually include regional form questions.

As a result, among the four candidates, only Wayne passed the assessment with over eighty points.

"Wayne, 91 points. Congratulations on passing the first round of assessment. Please proceed to draw your Pokemon for the second round."

"You got 91 points on this too?!"

The fellow examinee who took the test with Wayne was stunned.

Wayne simply wanted to say, isn't this something anyone could do?

The reading comprehension exercises he'd done before were much harder.

Do you know what it means when a fish's eyes flash with a strange light?

He'd released so many koi, but lost to a grass carp.

"Nurse Joy, may we observe the second round of assessment?"

"That depends on whether Mr. Wayne is willing."

"I have no problem with it."

Nurse Joy warned, "However, you must remember—no recording."

"No problem."

Nurse Joy led Wayne to a room where hundreds of Poke Balls were arranged on shelves.

"Please draw two Pokemon."

Even though Nurse Joy was Wayne's fan, she didn't go easy on Wayne during the assessment and provided no hints.

Nurse Joy possessed professional integrity.

Wayne's Appraisal Eye was useless on Poke Balls, so he randomly selected two.

"Come out!"

One was a Flareon—the only Eeveelution with a cream-colored tuft of fur on its forehead, a fluffy ruff, and a large, bushy tail.

The other was a Staraptor—a bird Pokemon with a hairstyle reminiscent of Ash's, possessing sharp talons and keen eyes.

Both were equally strong: Superior Advanced level.

Normally, the examiner's Pokemon would probably only be around this strength.

"You need to understand their moves and Abilities in the shortest possible time, and then you can choose any of the four rooms for the battle assessment."

Wayne took out high-quality Oran Berry Cubes to restore stamina, fed some to each Pokemon, and built up some rapport.

While doing so, he also used his Appraisal Eye to examine their Abilities and learned moves.

Flareon had Flash Fire, meaning Fire-type moves had no effect on it, but instead increased the power of its Fire-type moves.

Staraptor had Reckless, meaning the power of moves with recoil damage would increase.

Wayne stood up. "We can start now."

Nurse Joy was startled. "Aren't you going to prepare more?"

While Nurse Joy couldn't provide leniency in other areas, she could give Wayne more time to understand the Pokemon.

The Breeder who had requested to observe was also stunned.

"Isn't he being slightly too overconfident?"

"No need. I'm ready."

Nurse Joy could only nod. "Then please follow me."

Wayne was too lazy to deliberate and simply picked the first of the four rooms, very decisively.

It was Nurse Joy's first time witnessing someone approach an assessment so casually.

However, thinking that this was Wayne, who could even care for a Garchomp, it seemed not entirely unacceptable.

In the room stood an elderly man whom Wayne didn't recognize—probably a League staff member.

Nurse Joy positioned herself in the middle of the field at the referee's spot.

"I will serve as the referee for this battle."

"This battle is a two-on-two format. Both sides can freely switch Pokemon. The first side whose two Pokemon lose their battle capability loses. Let the battle begin!"

As Nurse Joy waved her flag, Wayne and the examiner, Caspian, both sent out their Pokemon.

"Go, Flareon!"

"Go, Roserade!"

In terms of type matchup, Flareon held an advantage over the Grass and Poison-type Roserade.

However, Roserade's strength was higher than Wayne had anticipated. It was Veteran Low-tier, slightly stronger than Flareon.

Its Ability was Natural Cure, which healed status conditions when it was switched out.

So Flareon's Will-O-Wisp wouldn't pose a fatal threat to Roserade.

"It's Flareon. The young man's luck is favorable."

Caspian immediately commanded, "Roserade, Toxic Spikes!"

Caspian appeared to be quite experienced, immediately laying down Toxic Spikes.

Roserade elegantly rotated its body, scattering purple Toxic Spikes from its flower buds, covering Wayne's side of the field.

Toxic Spikes covered the ground with poisonous spikes, causing Pokemon to become poisoned when switched in.

Although this Flareon knew Baton Pass, Calm Mind wasn't particularly effective for Staraptor, and only Flame Charge for Speed boosting was useful.

"Flareon, Flame Wheel!"

Roserade, which was rotating in place to scatter Toxic Spikes, took a direct hit from Flareon's Flame Wheel, its body becoming scorched.

Wayne's fan whispered, "It hit!"

Mr. Caspian commanded again, "Magical Leaf!"

The wide range of Magical Leaf made it nearly certain to hit.

Wayne called out loudly, "Mimic!"

Two streams of Magical Leaf collided in midair, causing an explosion.

Roserade's Magical Leaf remained more powerful.

Flareon was struck by some Magical Leaf, but Grass-type moves had minimal effect on Flareon.

Wayne didn't concern himself with it at all.

"Roserade, Synthesis!"

The ceiling of this room featured transparent glass, and Roserade's Synthesis recovered HP very quickly under the sunny conditions.

"Flame Charge, stop it!"

The advancing Flareon, engulfed in orange-red flames, crashed into Roserade once more.

When the thick smoke cleared, Roserade had already lost its battle capability.

Caspian frowned deeply. "Strange... Flareon's move power seems to have increased more than usual..."
