Chapter 8 - Predator Becomes Prey

Sylus, staring at the monster, knew that there was a good chance that he was about to lose his life, and it wasnt going to be one of the best things that anyone would want to encounter.

"Sylus, dont let it intimidate you."

He could hear the voice of his doppleganger inside his head, his gaze sharpened on the beast in front of him, and he was ready to make sure that nothing was going to lead to his death.

"Alright, dig deep, clear your mind, and let chaos loose."

Sylus took one deep breath, and the entire area began shaking, seeing the way from the aura coming from him. His body began emitting an energy so strong that it was able to warp air around them.

Hugo, standing from a distance, saw Sylus make his appearance; it was clear that something was going on.

"Who is that man there, Simon?" he asked, still keeping his eyes on the battlefield.

Simon pulled himself next to Hugo, trying to see if he would get a glimpse of the man standing next to Freya.

"Sir, he isn't a registered warrior if that is what you are asking. But sir, there is something about him that is off." Simon muttered, looking at the area where Sylus was standing in.

"Yeah, I feel it too," Hugo spoke up; his hand was shaking from the mere thought of it. "This man isn't normal."

The beast took one step back, looking at Sylus, and could feel what was about to happen; its demise was going to be inevitable if it didnt kill Sylus.

"Heir of Ruin, I will be the one to take your head!" the monster shrieked as it bolted for Sylus. It was so fast that no one paying attention saw its movement. The only thing they saw was the blur and the way it appeared in front of Sylus.

Its claws were glowing, radiating a powerful, oozy green aura. It slashed Sylus, but the moment its claws were about to hit Sylus, it was held in the air by an unknown force. The monster turned to look at Sylus, staring at Sylus until the man stared back at it.

Sylus's eyes were hollow; it looked like a million stars had fallen and found rest within them. It was almost like looking into the abyss, but the difference was that the abyss was staring right back.

The beast took one leap back, not hiding that it was now in a frenzy. Engulfed in fear, it knew that it wasnt the predator anymore; it had become the prey.

"But you are just a hatchling, how can you have so much access to the source?!" it shrieked, looking at Sylus. Spikes began sprouting out of its back; it wasnt about to let Sylus take it down. "I will be the one who will stand triumphant after I kill you. He will reward me, maybe this land will be mine!"

It fired spikes at Sylus, but the moment the spikes were inches away from Sylus's face. They paused mid-air, then suddenly they were fired off in all directions. Sylus looked at the beast, twisting his head as he slowly took a stance.

"Brace yourself, you abomination," Sylus muttered, taking one step, instantly closing the distance between him and the beast.

"What in the world?" Freya stood there, shocked. There was no way for her to explain how he could move that fast.

Sylus, in front of the beast, didn't hold back; he swung first. The punch connected, sending the beast flying back, blocks.

The beast managed to get its footing. It looked up to see that Sylus was about to come for it. It began charging up another blast, aiming for Sylus, and it fired.

Sylus stood still, raising both his hands to block the attack, but it collided with his hands as he was being pushed back.

"No matter what you do, you are still mortal!" the beast roared, looking at Sylus as it was being engulfed in what looked like decaying darkness. "You will never be anything that can stop me!"

The beast added more firepower to its blast, trying to push Sylus down. But Sylus didnt back down. The air around him had gone damp and hot, making it hard for him to stand.

"You still hold back, Sylus!" the voice rang in his head. Sylus was looking at the beast as it started levitating.

"I can't let it all loose, what if I disappear and something else takes over!" Sylus was still trying to block off all the monsters' blasts.

The beast had a smile on its face, it raised one of its hands. "I will make sure I harvest the element from your corpse, and I will make sure this city will face my wrath!"

Suddenly, what seemed like acidic air wrapped itself around the beast's hand; it looked like it was getting ready for an attack. Corpses of the A-ranked monsters began floating towards the beast, twirling around its hand as they melted away, transforming into the green acidic power wrapping around its hand.

"Gur's Rot!" the beast roared as it hurled the blast at Sylus.

Sylus blocked the attack, holding it back since it wasnt like any other one. The shockwave from it sent every other warrior, including Freya, flying back. It wasnt something they had seen.

"Freya!" Hugo leaped into action, catching Freya before she would get wound. There were now traces of acid in the air they were breathing. It felt like it was cutting up their insides.

"Who is that man?" Hugo asked as he pulled Freya closer, pulling up a rock fort to block away the shockwaves from the collision.

Freya's eyes were still on the battlefield, trying to see if what was happening in front of her was true or not. But it was now clear that it was as real as day, but she had her doubts.

"He's my brother," Freya said, not averting her gaze. "I think it's him."

Sylus was still trying to hold back the blast; the power from the attack was already making his hand begin to decay.

"I can't let something take over, I want to be here!" he yelled, pushing back with every ounce of strength he had.

"Nothing will take over; you will be in control and obliterate this beast. Now, Sylus, unleash chaos, wreak havoc!"

"Ahhhh!" Sylus roared, destroying the blast in front of him as his body let out a dark aura, black, purple, and blue emitted from his body. As his hair slowly began to turn white, his body began letting out a godly glow.

The beast, trembling, fell to the floor when it saw what was happening in front of it. It wasnt trying to run or fight anymore, it wasnt feeling rage or excitement. There was only one emotion in its body at the moment, and it was fear.

"It can't be," it muttered, taking steps back as it kept its eyes on Sylus, knowing that there was something about to happen. "You aren't meant to be here. What are you doing in the body of a mortal, Lord of Ruins!"

Sylus slowly lifted both his hands in the direction of the monster, taking one deep breath. His hands began glowing, and his body was still emitting high amounts of what seemed to be otherworldly mana. Suddenly, a ball of light began forming in his hands. It slowly morphed into darkness, lit by lightning, followed by what seemed to be the cries of a horde of beasts.

For a moment, everything became silent, the wind, the screams, even the city as if it was holding its breath.

"Spectrum Strike!" Sylus roared before firing the ball of energy at the beast. There was nothing to block; the ball moved like a meteorite, eradicating anything in its path.

The beast stood its ground, as it formed a force field, trying to make sure it would survive. "I will not die here, not in the hands of a mortal!"

But the moment the ball hit it, there was a powerful implosion followed by a loud bang and a flash of light. When everything cleared up, the beast was gone, and Sylus was standing victorious.

For the first time in years, Sylus wasnt the one who ran from a fight. He was the one who ended things.

Slowly, Sylus's hair turned back to normal, with his eyes going back to their original hazel blue. He stood there with a smile on his face.

"I did it." He said before falling face-first to the floor, he had taken a toll on his body when he unleashed his powers.

Freya didnt waste time when she saw him fall, running to her brother. She lifted him off the floor, placing his head on her lap as she examined him.

It was him; her fears were not real. She thought that something had taken over his body.

"When did you awaken your core again?" She muttered, cleaning the grime off his face. There was no clear way for her to process all they had witnessed.

Hugo was still looking at the battlefield, the monster that had taken the lives of multiple S-ranks and pushed Freya back. Was disintegrated by one man, and the man didnt take any serious damage; he seemed to have passed out from exhaustion.

"Sir Hugo," Simon tapped Hugo's shoulder. His face showed how bewildered he was as well. "The readings for this fight just came back from the Bureau's satellite, and I think you would want to hear this."

Hugo turned to look at Simon. He looked at the reading, and his eyes widened when he saw what was on the paper.

"Impossible," he whispered loudly as he tried to make sense of it. "There has been no appearance of any being like that, not in two decades."

"Sir, I know it might look impossible, but I think we just witnessed the awakening of an Arcane-ranked warrior."

Both of them turned to look at Freya holding Sylus; there was no way for them to even understand what had been put in motion.
