"Four days from now, Pegasus will come to Domino City to hold a duel tournament, and I'll also be attending that tournament as the Duel King. I believe the tournament Jaden mentioned is that one. Since the other party's target is Pegasus, I think he'll appear that day," Kisaragi said.
"Really?" Yusei asked.
"Yes. When the time comes, we'll evacuate the crowd before the tournament begins. I'll be counting on you then."
Kisaragi looked at the spirit faintly appearing behind Jaden.
"Heh heh heh. Even after all these years, even after returning to an era of the past, your intuition is still astonishing."
A bewitching voice came from behind Jaden.
"Yubel, come out," Jaden said.
The moment Jaden finished speaking, a female demon with dark-red skin, huge black wings, eyes of different colors, and a third eye on her forehead appeared behind him.
"Jaden, is that the spirit of your Duel Monster?" Yusei asked in disbelief.
He could feel the immense power of that spirit.
"That's right. Her name is Yubel. She's one of my important partners," Jaden said.
"But when it comes to the strength of spirits, I can't compare to Kisaragi," Yubel said.
Yubel suddenly remembered the scene of being utterly beaten down by Kisaragi in the past and felt a trace of cold sweat run down her spine.
"Then when the time comes, I'll ask Yubel to create chaos at the venue. I think the other party will definitely appear," Kisaragi said.
"Leave it to me," Yubel said.
"Kisaragi!"
A deep voice sounded from behind Kisaragi.
Hearing that familiar voice, Kisaragi could not help putting a hand to her forehead. Then she composed her expression, smiled, and turned around.
"Seto, why are you here? And Yugi too?" Kisaragi asked.
"Téa saw you leave with strangers and felt something was wrong, so she contacted Kaiba and me. Kaiba found your location through the tracker inside your Duel Disk. Who are these people?" Yugi asked.
Kaiba said nothing. He simply stared at the two men behind Kisaragi.
"I forgot about that. Seto can pinpoint my location. Next time I leave, I need to remember to switch Duel Disks," Kisaragi silently decided.
"Ugh, Uncle Kaiba's stare is still as terrifying as ever," Jaden muttered.
He remembered how, back at Duel Academy, he had been fairly close with Professor Kisaragi and had often been targeted by Kaiba because of it.
Yusei stepped forward directly and bowed to Yugi and Kaiba.
"You must be Mr. Yugi and Mr. Kaiba. My name is Yusei Fudo."
Yusei had seen information on both of them in the history of Duel Monsters. These two held extremely important positions in the entire history of Duel Monsters.
"What is your purpose in approaching Kisaragi?" Kaiba looked down at Yusei and Jaden, showing his hostility without any attempt to hide it.
From Kaiba's aura, Yusei thought of one of his own friends. He felt the two were somewhat similar in certain ways.
After that, Yusei and Jaden explained the entire sequence of events to Kaiba and Yugi.
"Utterly absurd!" Kaiba shouted.
"Time travel? Affecting the course of human history? Don't use nonsense like that to deceive people!"
"Seto, don't be like that."
Kisaragi soothed Kaiba's emotions.
"All of this will be verified in four days. And Yugi, Seto—you two had better not get involved, because the more people who participate in this matter, the more likely it is to negatively affect the future."
"What?!"
Kaiba stared at Kisaragi with fury in his eyes.
"Huh. This is the first time I've seen Uncle Kaiba look at Professor Kisaragi with that kind of expression," Jaden said.
"I'm serious. This time, the enemy can travel through different eras. He'll probably use Duel Monsters from different ages. If too many people know about this, it may affect cards that were originally supposed to appear at certain points in the future," Kisaragi said.
"Although I myself use cards beyond this era, those cards have already adapted to the rules of this world," Kisaragi thought. "And if Synchro Summoning is shown in front of Kaiba, he might create a perpetual-motion machine ahead of schedule. That wouldn't exactly be good news for the future."
"I understand."
The anger on Kaiba's face faded.
"I have only one demand."
"What demand?"
"Protect yourself. Otherwise, I'll cross time and space to take revenge on that bastard myself, and when that happens, I won't care about any time-space disorder," Kaiba said.
"All right. I won't lose," Kisaragi said.
"If Kaiba can say something like that, maybe he really could do it. In the original story, he literally went to the underworld just to play cards with the Pharaoh. To protect the progression of Duel Monsters, we not only have to defeat Uncle Paradox, but also guard against Kaiba."
A trace of cold sweat ran down Kisaragi's back.
…
On the day of the duel tournament, because Kisaragi had called Pegasus ahead of time, Pegasus decided to arrive a little later.
Domino City's Times Square was already packed with duelists preparing to participate in the tournament.
Meanwhile, Kisaragi, Yusei, and Jaden observed from the shadows.
"Kisaragi!"
Yugi walked over.
"Yugi, didn't I say you didn't have to participate?" Kisaragi asked.
"I understand your concerns, but I still can't feel at ease. I promise I won't tell anyone about this incident or the contents of the duel. Besides, I will soon be searching for my own memories, so you don't need to worry about me affecting the future," Yugi said.
"Fine then. Yusei, Jaden, proceed according to the original plan!"
After Kisaragi spoke, Yusei and Jaden nodded.
At the center of the tournament venue, a fireball came hurtling down and destroyed the original duel stage.
"Everyone, run! Hurry and leave this place! Find somewhere to take shelter!" Jaden shouted.
The passersby in the square thought some disaster had occurred and scattered in all directions. Before long, aside from Kisaragi and the other three, not a single person remained.
"I see. If the tournament is halted, Pegasus won't be killed," Yugi said.
"That won't do."
A low voice sounded. A motorcycle drove out from a rift in time, ridden by a yellow-haired man wearing a mask.
"It seems you are the culprit behind all of this," Kisaragi said, stepping forward.
"Oh? The Duel Kings have gathered, along with a woman I don't recognize," the man said.
"Who exactly are you, and why do you want to kill Pegasus?" Yugi asked.
"Why? Very well. I'll tell you."
The man removed his mask.
"My name is Paradox. I am one who crosses time and space in search of the best possible history. I verify the various possibilities within history, then put them into action."
