Arthur Kipps sat by the fire, the London fog pressing against the windowpane like a damp shroud. A letter arrived—stiff, ivory parchment from the firm of Bentley & Witham. Alice Drablow, a recluse of Eel Marsh House, was dead. As a junior solicitor, it was Arthur's task to attend the funeral and settle her estate.
