Chapter 4 - The Sound of a hidden piano

Evening settled quietly over St. Aurelius Elite Academy.

The golden glow of sunset slowly faded behind the tall academy buildings, leaving long shadows stretching across the courtyard. Most students had already returned to their dormitories or gone home in sleek black cars waiting beyond the gates.

By the time night arrived, the academy felt like a completely different place.

Quiet.

Still.

Empty.

For Elena Rivera, it was her favorite time of the day.

The silence made it easier to breathe.

She walked slowly through the nearly deserted hallway of the music wing, her footsteps echoing softly against the polished floor. The lights above were dimmer now, casting a warm glow across the walls lined with framed photographs of past performances and award-winning students.

Many of them had gone on to become famous musicians.

Elena paused briefly in front of one of the pictures before continuing toward the music hall.

Her fingers tightened slightly around the strap of her bag.

She had been thinking about the cafeteria all afternoon.

About Adrian Volkov.

More specifically, about the strange look in his eyes when they had met across the room.

It wasn't anger.

Or annoyance.

It almost looked like...

Recognition.

But that didn't make sense.

They had never spoken.

They had never even properly met.

Shaking the thought away, Elena pushed open the door to the music hall.

The large auditorium welcomed her with quiet darkness.

Only the stage lights were on.

At the center of the stage waited the grand piano.

Just like it always did.

She walked toward it slowly, placing her bag down beside the bench. The smooth black surface of the piano reflected the dim lights above, making it look almost mysterious in the quiet room.

Elena sat down and opened her folder.

Her music sheets were slightly crumpled from being carried around all day.

She smoothed them carefully before placing them on the stand.

For a moment, she simply stared at the keys.

Then her fingers gently pressed down.

The first note echoed softly through the empty hall.

Outside the music hall, footsteps stopped.

Adrian Volkov had not planned to come here.

He had stayed late again at the academy, reviewing business reports sent by his father's company. It was something he had been expected to learn since childhood-how to manage the future empire that would one day belong to him.

Numbers.

Contracts.

Power.

None of it had ever interested him.

But expectations didn't leave room for personal choices.

He had been walking through the hallway on his way out when the sound reached him.

A piano.

The melody drifted through the quiet corridor, soft and emotional.

Adrian froze.

It was the same sound.

The same quiet intensity.

The same feeling that had stopped him the night before.

His chest tightened slightly.

Without realizing it, he moved closer.

Inside the hall, Elena continued playing.

The melody was different tonight.

Slower.

Gentler.

Each note seemed to carry a quiet story only she understood.

Her eyes closed as her fingers moved across the keys.

Music had always been the one place where she didn't feel out of place.

Here, she didn't have to worry about rich families, powerful names, or fitting into a world she had never belonged to.

Here, she could simply be herself.

Outside the door, Adrian stood completely still.

The music filled the hallway like a memory he couldn't escape.

His mother used to play like this.

Late at night.

When the house was quiet.

He used to sit beside her on the piano bench, his small fingers clumsily copying her movements.

She used to laugh softly when he made mistakes.

Those were the only moments his father never interrupted.

The only moments Adrian had ever felt... normal.

The memory struck him harder than he expected.

Inside the hall, the melody reached its final notes.

Elena slowly lifted her fingers from the keys.

The last sound faded gently into silence.

She opened her eyes.

For a moment, she thought she heard something outside the door.

Footsteps.

But when she turned, the hallway beyond the stage entrance looked empty.

Unbeknownst to her, Adrian had already stepped back into the shadows.

His expression had changed.

The usual cold indifference in his eyes had softened slightly.

He stood there for a moment longer before finally turning away.

But the melody followed him down the hallway.

Inside the music hall, Elena packed her sheets back into her folder.

She felt strangely lighter after playing.

As if the music had carried away the stress of the day.

She turned off the stage lights and walked toward the exit.

Completely unaware that just outside the hall moments ago...

Adrian Volkov had been listening again.

And for the second night in a row...

the sound of her piano had reached a part of him he had buried years ago.
