Chapter 10 - Patterns and Practice

The academy dormitory was quiet when Kai returned that night.

Most students had already settled into their rooms, while a few lingered in the common areas talking quietly about the day's lessons. The faint glow of lanterns lit the stone hallways, casting long shadows across the floor.

Kai walked calmly through the corridor.

His body was tired from training, but his mind was active.

The forest disturbance still lingered in his thoughts.

Large claw marks.

Multiple predators fleeing the same direction.

And those massive footprints.

Something powerful had moved through the outer forest.

Something the academy hadn't warned them about.

Kai entered his room and set his sword beside the bed. The weapon rested there silently, polished steel reflecting the lantern light.

He sat down.

The system appeared again.

Daily System Update

Available Tasks:

• Precision Breathing Training

• Tactical Memory Exercise

• Environmental Awareness Challenge

• Equipment Maintenance

Kai read the list carefully.

These weren't combat quests.

Good.

Not everything had to involve fighting.

He selected the first one.

Task Accepted

Precision Breathing Training

Objective: Maintain controlled breathing for 20 minutes while circulating internal energy.

Reward:

+8 XP

+2 Reward Points

Minor Stamina Improvement

Kai closed his eyes.

He slowed his breathing gradually.

Inhale.

Exhale.

The faint energy he had absorbed from previous crystals flowed slowly through his body. It wasn't overwhelming or explosive. Instead, it felt like a quiet current moving through his muscles and lungs.

Each breath steadied his heartbeat.

Minutes passed.

The system monitored silently.

After twenty minutes—

Task Complete

Reward Granted

Kai opened his eyes.

His chest felt lighter.

Breathing deeper now required less effort.

Small improvements.

But steady progress mattered more than sudden leaps.

Next he selected the second task.

Task Accepted

Tactical Memory Exercise

Objective: Recall and map the forest disturbance patterns observed earlier today.

Reward:

+10 XP

+3 Reward Points

Minor Perception Growth

Kai leaned back against the wall.

He replayed the scene from the forest.

The clearing.

The claw marks.

The displaced predators.

Hybrid Vision Eyes activated briefly.

Faint memory overlays appeared in his mind.

He traced the direction of movement.

Large prints heading north.

Multiple smaller species fleeing south and west.

Which meant the predator's hunting path likely cut through the central valley.

Kai mentally mapped the pattern.

A moment later the system confirmed.

Task Complete

Prediction Accuracy: 86%

Reward Granted

Kai nodded slightly.

That percentage would likely improve with experience.

He accepted the third task.

Task Accepted

Environmental Awareness Challenge

Objective: Identify five distinct sounds within the dormitory environment.

Reward:

+6 XP

+2 Reward Points

Kai sat quietly.

At first the hallway seemed silent.

But he listened carefully.

A door creaked somewhere down the hall.

Footsteps moved along the stone floor above him.

A student coughed in a nearby room.

Wind brushed softly against the academy windows.

And far outside—

An owl called from the forest.

The system responded instantly.

Task Complete

Reward Granted

Kai allowed himself a faint smile.

Three different tasks.

Three improvements.

None of them involved combat.

Which was exactly how progress should work.

Balanced.

Steady.

The next morning arrived quickly.

Students gathered once again on the training grounds.

Instructor Halvern stood at the center of the arena.

"Today's exercise is moving target combat."

Several wooden mechanisms had been installed around the field. Rotating arms held padded targets that swung unpredictably through the air.

Halvern continued.

"You will strike the targets while avoiding the moving arms. Timing matters more than power."

Marcus cracked his knuckles.

"Finally something interesting."

Aiden looked at the spinning targets and frowned.

"I already hate this."

Victor stepped forward calmly.

"Just watch the patterns."

Kai studied the machines carefully.

Hybrid Vision Eyes activated briefly.

The rotating arms followed mechanical timing cycles.

Predictable.

But only if someone paid attention.

Halvern pointed.

"Begin."

Students stepped forward one by one.

Marcus smashed the first two targets easily but took a spinning arm to the shoulder on the third.

Aiden attempted to dodge everything and accidentally ran into a target.

Victor moved through the obstacles with controlled precision, striking cleanly without wasted motion.

Kai stepped forward next.

The arms spun.

Targets moved.

Kai waited.

One rotation.

Two.

He memorized the rhythm.

Then he moved.

Step.

Strike.

Turn.

Dodge.

His blade tapped three targets in smooth succession while he avoided every swinging arm.

Halvern nodded slightly.

"Efficient."

Kai stepped back into line.

No one else commented.

Exactly how he preferred it.

Later that afternoon several students visited the equipment hall to maintain their weapons.

Kai sat at a long wooden table carefully sharpening his blade.

Marcus dropped into the seat beside him.

"You're always so quiet," Marcus said.

Kai shrugged.

"Not much to say."

Marcus laughed.

"You're strange."

Across the room Aiden attempted to polish his sword but somehow dropped the cloth repeatedly.

Victor watched him with mild disappointment.

Lena quietly repaired a strap on her armor.

Kai focused on his blade.

The system appeared again.

New Task

Equipment Optimization

Objective: Adjust weapon balance for improved control.

Reward:

+12 XP

+4 Reward Points

Weapon Handling Bonus

Kai adjusted the grip wrapping carefully.

He shifted the balance slightly closer to the guard.

The sword immediately felt more responsive in his hand.

The system confirmed.

Task Complete

Reward Granted

Kai tested the blade with a light swing.

Better.

Much better.

Later that evening he returned to the forest.

Not for crystals.

Just observation.

The air was cool and quiet beneath the tall trees.

Kai walked slowly along a narrow trail.

Hybrid Vision Eyes activated again.

Energy trails crisscrossed the ground.

But something new appeared.

Small glowing insects drifted through the air ahead.

Dozens of them.

Their wings shimmered faintly with pale blue light.

Kai stopped.

These weren't aggressive beasts.

They looked like tiny floating embers.

He watched them quietly.

The system appeared.

Discovery Quest

Species Observation

Objective: Study unknown luminous insects without disturbing them.

Reward:

+18 XP

+6 Reward Points

Knowledge Database Update

Kai crouched and observed them carefully.

The insects floated around a cluster of glowing mushrooms near a fallen log.

Their wings pulsed rhythmically.

Almost like breathing.

After several minutes the system completed the quest.

Species Recorded

Lumen Moths

Classification: Passive energy insects

Reward Granted

Kai stood slowly.

Even small discoveries mattered.

Not everything in the forest existed to be hunted.

Some things simply existed to be understood.

On his way back toward the academy Kai paused briefly.

Hybrid Vision Eyes scanned the distant treeline.

For a moment—

Just a moment—

He saw something large move across the ridge far away.

Too far to identify clearly.

But the outline was enormous.

Kai frowned slightly.

Then the movement disappeared into the darkness.

The same direction as the strange footprints.

The disturbance was still out there.

Still moving.

Kai turned back toward the academy quietly.

For now, observation was enough.

But sooner or later—

That creature would reveal itself.
