Chapter 1 - Botanist turned into a Cat-boy

The last thing Jonas remembered was the acrid tang of burnt chemicals and the searing pain in his lungs.

He'd pushed himself too hard, as always, trying to save a rare specimen of luminous moss from a collapsing cave-in during a solo expedition. A true botanist to the bitter end, he mused, a phantom cough rattling his non-existent chest.

Then, nothing. Utter blackness, devoid of sensation, thought, or time.

Until now.

A dull throb behind his eyes, a phantom ache in muscles he didn't recognize, and a symphony of unfamiliar sounds slowly filtered into his awareness.

The world was a blurry kaleidoscope of greens and browns, swaying gently above him. A canopy of colossal, iridescent leaves filtered the sunlight into dappled patterns on a forest floor that smelled of damp earth, exotic blooms, and something undeniably wild—a musky, animal scent that prickled his senses.

Jonas tried to push himself up, but his limbs felt heavy, uncoordinated. He managed a groan, a sound that was far too high-pitched to be his own. Panic, cold and sharp, began to prickle at the edges of his nascent consciousness.

This wasn't a hospital bed.

This wasn't even Earth.

He finally managed to sit up, blinking rapidly, trying to clear the haze from his vision. The world resolved into an astonishing, almost alien landscape. Trees taller than any skyscraper he'd ever seen pierced a sky of an impossible sapphire blue.

Flowers glowed with internal light, pulsating softly like slow heartbeats. Strange, chittering insects with wings like stained glass flitted between giant ferns. The air was thick with the scent of life, vibrant and untamed.

He looked down at himself, and the last vestiges of his composure shattered.

These weren't his hands. They were small, slender, covered in soft, cream-colored fur. Sharp, retractable claws tipped delicate fingers. He raised a hand to his head, feeling not his usual short, practical hair, but two velvety, triangular ears that twitched at the sudden chirp of a nearby bird.

"What… in the actual hell?" he whispered, his voice a reedy, unfamiliar tenor. He scrambled to a nearby pool of surprisingly clear water, its surface reflecting a face that was definitely not his.

He's going down the hills

It was undeniably… feline.

A young man, perhaps late teens or early twenties, with wide, bewildered emerald eyes, a small, slightly pointed nose, and soft, whiskery marks on his cheeks. Cream-colored fur covered his skin, fading into a darker, striped pattern on what he could only assume was a tail, twitching nervously behind him. He touched his face, the soft fur brushing his fingertips.

A low, confused whine escaped him.

He was a cat-boy. A literal, honest-to-god, anthropomorphic cat-boy.

As he stared, horrified, at his reflection, a searing headache lanced through his skull. Images, feelings, and fragmented memories that weren't his own flooded his mind.

A life of weakness, of being scorned, of hunger and cold. A tribe – the Swiftpaw Tribe – where he was an outcast, a "Faded Blood." The shame, the constant struggle to prove himself, to be as strong as the other beastmen who could shift into majestic animal forms. The memory of being driven out, abandoned in the treacherous Forbidden Forest, left to die.

This body's name was… Jonas. Jonas Galvez. The same name, but a different life, a different fate. He was the original Jonas Galvez, reborn into this pitiful, abandoned form.

"Transmigration," he muttered, the word tasting strange on his new tongue. He'd read enough web novels in his limited downtime to recognize the trope. But transmigration into a beast world as an abandoned, weak cat-person? This was a truly sadistic twist of fate.

A sudden, sharp pain flared in his stomach. He was starving, profoundly so. His new body was weak, malnourished. He vaguely remembered the original Jonas having gone days without food before succumbing to despair and exposure.

He stumbled away from the water, his new legs feeling like stilts. The forest, though breathtakingly beautiful, now seemed overwhelmingly hostile.

Every rustle of leaves, every distant snarl, sent shivers down his spine.

He was in the Forbidden Forest, a place where even the strongest beastmen feared to tread. He, a scrawny, Faded Blood cat-boy, stood no chance.

This is it, then, he thought with a grim resignation that surprised him. Died trying to save moss, reincarnated as a cat-boy, died again from starvation in a fantasy forest. A truly ignominious end to a life dedicated to science.

As despair began to set in, a strange, ethereal blue light shimmered before his eyes. It was faint at first, like a heat haze, then solidified into a translucent panel floating in the air, a series of glowing symbols and words shimmering on its surface.

[SYSTEM INITIALIZING…]

[WELCOME, HOST: JONAS GALVEZ]

[PLANETARY INTEGRATION: COMPLETE]

[PRIMARY DIRECTIVE: SURVIVE]

Jonas blinked. Then he blinked again. A system? Like in the novels? He cautiously reached out a furry finger. His hand passed right through it. It was purely a mental construct.

[SYSTEM DETECTS CRITICAL STATUS: MALNOURISHED]

[PROGNOSIS: SEVERE. CHANCE OF SURVIVAL WITHOUT INTERVENTION: <1%]

"Oh, thanks for the pep talk, System," Jonas grumbled, a sarcastic edge in his voice. "Couldn't have figured that out on my own."

[IDENTIFYING HOST'S CORE COMPETENCIES… COMPLETE]

[ACTIVATING 'BOTANICAL EVOLUTION SYSTEM']

[SCANNING… SCANNING… IDENTIFYING LOCAL FLORA]

A new panel popped up, this one covered in images of the strange plants around him, each with an identification and a brief description.

[PALEBLOOM MOSS (Non-toxic): Common ground cover. Edible in small quantities, but offers minimal nutritional value. Can be used as a mild antiseptic when crushed.]

[LUMINA-BERRY BUSH (Mildly Toxic): Bright red berries. Ingesting more than two causes severe stomach upset. Contains a weak paralytic agent.]

[GREAT THORN-VINE (Extremely Dangerous): Thick, thorny vine. Sap is highly corrosive. Avoid contact.]

Jonas stared at the information, his mind whirring. This… this was useful. This was his field! He might be a weak cat-boy, but he was still Jonas Galvez, the botanist.

"Okay, System," he said, a flicker of hope igniting within him. "Can you find me something edible? Something with actual nutritional value, not just 'minimal'?"

[SEARCHING FOR HIGH-NUTRITION EDIBLE FLORA WITHIN 100-METER RADIUS…]

[RESULTS: 1]

[PLANT: ROOT-STAR (Highly Nutritious): A tuberous root plant. Provides essential carbohydrates and some protein. Excellent for sustained energy.]

[LOCATION: 30 meters North-North-East, beneath the bifurcated Glow-Willow tree. Dig approximately 50 cm deep.]

[ENERGY COST FOR LOCATION SCAN: 0.1 UNIT]

Jonas looked in the direction indicated. There was indeed a massive, ancient-looking tree with two main trunks, its glowing leaves casting an ethereal light. Hope blossomed, strong and vibrant, pushing back the despair.

"Lead the way, System," he said, already feeling a surge of determination. He might be weak, but he was a survivor. He had been on Earth, and he would be here too.

He stumbled towards the Glow-Willow, his new senses keenly aware of every rustle and scent. The forest seemed less menacing now, replaced by a sense of purpose. He reached the tree and began to dig with his clawed hands, tearing at the rich, dark soil. It was slow, laborious work, his muscles protesting with every movement, but he persisted.

The original Jonas's weakness might have discouraged him, but this Jonas had faced down aggressive wildlife, endured extreme temperatures, and survived on meager rations in the name of scientific discovery. A little digging was nothing.

After what felt like an eternity, his claws struck something firm. He carefully unearthed a gnarled, potato-like root, about the size of his forearm. It had a rough, brownish skin and smelled faintly sweet, like chestnuts.

[ITEM ACQUIRED: ROOT-STAR]

[CONSUME IMMEDIATELY FOR OPTIMAL NUTRITIONAL ABSORPTION.]

Jonas didn't need telling twice. He bit into the raw root. It was earthy, starchy, but surprisingly palatable. He devoured it, feeling the warmth of nourishment spread through his empty stomach. A wave of lightheadedness washed over him as his body absorbed the much-needed nutrients.

[NUTRITIONAL STATUS: IMPROVING]

[CURRENT STATUS: MODERATELY MALNOURISHED]

[HP REGENERATION: +0.5 HP/MINUTE]

[NEW QUEST ALERT: REPLENISH ENERGY]

[OBJECTIVE: Consume 3 more ROOT-STARS.]

[REWARD: BASIC SURVIVAL KIT (Small knife, waterskin, fire-starter)]

A survival kit! That was exactly what he needed. His resolve solidified. This System wasn't just a gimmick; it was his lifeline.

"Okay, System. Where are the next three?"

[SEARCHING FOR HIGH-NUTRITION EDIBLE FLORA WITHIN 100-METER RADIUS…]

[RESULTS: 3 ROOT-STARS identified.]

[LOCATION 1: 55 meters West-South-West, near the Whispering Reeds. Dig approximately 40 cm deep.]

[LOCATION 2: 70 meters East, by the Fallen Timber. Dig approximately 60 cm deep.]

[LOCATION 3: 90 meters North-East, under the Twin-Leaf Fern. Dig approximately 55 cm deep.]

[ENERGY COST FOR LOCATION SCAN: 0.3 UNIT]

Jonas spent the next few hours painstakingly digging up the roots. His body ached, his claws were sore, and his fur was coated in dirt, but with each consumed Root-Star, he felt a little stronger, a little more capable.

The primal urges of his new body were still overwhelming—the hunger, the heightened senses, the instinct to hide—but his human mind, the mind of a scientist, was slowly gaining control.

By the time he had consumed the fourth Root-Star, the sun was beginning to dip below the colossal treetops, painting the sky in hues of deep violet and fiery orange.

The forest began to transform, glowing plants intensifying their luminescence, and the calls of unseen nocturnal creatures echoing through the deepening shadows.

[NUTRITIONAL STATUS: STABLE]

[CURRENT STATUS: HEALTHY (for Faded Blood Beastman)]

[HP REGENERATION: +1 HP/MINUTE]

[QUEST COMPLETE: REPLENISH ENERGY]

[REWARD ACQUIRED: BASIC SURVIVAL KIT]

A small, nondescript pouch materialized in his lap. He carefully opened it. Inside, nestled among a few dry leaves, was a small but sharp stone knife, its edge surprisingly keen; a sturdy leather waterskin, cool and seemingly full; and a small, flint-and-steel fire-starter.

"Amazing," Jonas breathed, holding the items. These weren't just tools; they were symbols of control, of agency. He could make fire, gather water, and even defend himself, however minimally.

[NEW QUEST ALERT: SECURE SHELTER]

[OBJECTIVE: Find a safe place to rest for the night.]

[REWARD: CRAFTING RECIPE: BASIC SHELTER.]

"Good idea," Jonas agreed, his emerald eyes scanning the darkening forest. "Can you help me find a suitable spot, System?"

[SEARCHING FOR SAFE SHELTER LOCATION WITHIN 200-METER RADIUS…]

[RESULTS: 1 Cave System identified.]

[LOCATION: 150 meters South-West, beneath the Blood-Thorn Banyan. Entrance partially concealed by dense foliage.]

[ENERGY COST FOR LOCATION SCAN: 0.2 UNIT]

He made his way towards the Blood-Thorn Banyan, a grotesque but magnificent tree with aerial roots that seemed to bleed a crimson sap. The cave entrance was indeed well-hidden, almost swallowed by the tree's gnarled roots and thick, hanging vines. He cautiously pushed his way through, his new senses on high alert. The air inside was cool and damp, smelling of earth and minerals.

"System, anything dangerous in here?" he whispered, his ears swiveling.

[SCANNING CAVE SYSTEM… COMPLETE]

[DANGER LEVEL: LOW. NO LARGE PREDATORS DETECTED.]

[SMALL PESTS (Cave Beetles, Glow-Worms): PRESENT. HARMLESS.]

Reassured, Jonas ventured deeper.

The cave wasn't very large, a single chamber with a relatively flat floor, but it offered protection from the elements and potential predators. He used his stone knife to clear away some loose rocks and debris, making a small, relatively comfortable space for himself.

Then, with the fire-starter, he managed to coax a small, flickering flame into existence using some dry leaves and twigs he'd gathered. The warmth was a comforting presence in the growing chill of the night, and the dancing light pushed back the oppressive shadows.

He sat by the fire, watching the flames, his cat ears occasionally twitching at the distant howls and roars of the forest. The survival instincts of his new body were strong, demanding vigilance, but his human mind was already working, planning.

He might be in a strange, dangerous world, in a weak body, but he wasn't helpless. He had the System, his botanical knowledge, and a fierce will to survive. The original Jonas Galvez, the one who died from exhaustion, would have been proud of this new, tenacious version of himself.

"Okay, System," he murmured, his voice stronger now, more confident. "What's next? What's this 'Villainous Great Black Serpent' the initial notification mentioned?"

[INFORMATION ON 'VILLAINOUS GREAT BLACK SERPENT' LOCKED. REQUIRES HIGHER SYSTEM LEVEL.]

[CURRENT SYSTEM LEVEL: 1]

[XP TO NEXT LEVEL: 100/1000]

[NEW QUEST ALERT: MASTER BASIC SURVIVAL]

[OBJECTIVE: Survive 7 days in the Forbidden Forest.]

[REWARD: SYSTEM LEVEL UP. UNLOCKING NEW FUNCTIONS.]

Jonas frowned. "Seven days? Alone in this forest?"

[CHALLENGE: MODERATE. HOST'S CURRENT ABILITIES: ADEQUATE WITH STRATEGIC PLANNING.]

"Right," Jonas sighed, but a determined glint shone in his emerald eyes. This wasn't just about survival anymore. This was about understanding this world, about unraveling its mysteries, about getting stronger. The "Villainous Great Black Serpent" intrigued him. He wasn't one to shy away from a challenge, especially if it involved a scientific puzzle.

He curled up by the fire, his tail wrapping instinctively around his new, more agile legs. The warmth of the fire, the full stomach, and the knowledge of his new tools brought a measure of peace. He closed his eyes, his cat ears still alert, listening to the symphony of the Forbidden Forest.

He was Jonas Galvez, botanist and survivor, reborn into a beast world. And he had a System. He wasn't just going to survive; he was going to thrive. The Forbidden Forest, and whatever challenges it held, had no idea what was coming for it.
