Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: The Girl No One Noticed

For once the school felt calm. No arguments in the hallway. No tense confrontations. Even Selena seemed strangely quiet. Lyra noticed it, but she didn't comment on it. If anything, the silence just made the whole situation more suspicious. Mira, on the other hand, seemed different that day. Quieter than usual. Lyra noticed it while they walked to class together. Normally Mira talked nonstop about everything happening in the school, but today she barely said a word. "You're unusually quiet," Lyra finally said while closing her locker. Mira blinked like she had just been pulled out of her thoughts. "What? No I'm not." Lyra raised an eyebrow. "You haven't complained about Selena once today. That alone is suspicious." Mira forced a small laugh. "Maybe I'm just tired of the drama." Lyra studied her for a moment but shrugged. "Fair." Classes dragged on like usual, but Lyra kept noticing the same thing. Mira seemed distracted. She checked her phone constantly. Her attention drifted during conversations. Something was clearly on her mind. By the time the last class ended, Lyra finally spoke again. "Alright," she said as they stepped out into the hallway. "What's going on with you?" Mira frowned. "What do you mean?" "You've been acting weird all day," Lyra said bluntly. "So either you're hiding something or you're planning something." Mira hesitated for just a second too long. Lyra noticed. "Oh," Lyra said slowly. "You're definitely hiding something." Mira sighed and ran a hand through her hair. "It's nothing." "You're a terrible liar," Lyra replied. Before Mira could answer, a familiar voice interrupted. "Lyra Bennett." Selena stood a few steps away, watching them calmly. Mira stiffened immediately. Lyra remained relaxed. "Selena Vale," Lyra said casually. "Back for another public humiliation?" A few students nearby immediately slowed down to listen. Selena smiled faintly. "You really do enjoy provoking people." Lyra shrugged. "You enjoy giving me opportunities." Selena ignored the comment and glanced briefly at Mira. Something about the look made Mira shift slightly. Lyra noticed it instantly. "Interesting," Selena murmured. "You really trust her, don't you?" Lyra frowned slightly. "Trust who?" Selena's smile widened just a little. "Your friend." Lyra glanced at Mira, confused by the tension suddenly filling the air. Mira avoided her eyes. Lyra's expression slowly hardened. "Okay," she said quietly. "What's going on?" Selena chuckled softly. "You haven't told her?" Mira whispered quickly, "Selena stop." But Selena ignored her. "I'm surprised," Selena continued calmly. "For someone who claims to be fearless, Lyra, you really didn't notice what was right in front of you." Lyra's patience snapped. "Notice what?" Selena folded her arms. "Your best friend has been working for me." Silence exploded through the hallway. Lyra turned slowly toward Mira. Mira's face had gone pale. "Tell me that's not true," Lyra said quietly. Mira didn't answer. That was enough. Lyra laughed once in disbelief. "Wow." Mira finally spoke. "Lyra… I can explain." "Please do," Lyra replied coldly. Mira swallowed. "Selena asked me to keep an eye on you when you first came here." Lyra stared at her. "You mean spy on me." Mira's voice shook. "At first, yes." Lyra shook her head slowly, still processing it. "How long?" Mira hesitated. Selena answered for her. "Since the first day you arrived." The words hit harder than Lyra expected. Every conversation. Every moment. Mira had been there. Watching. Listening. Reporting. Lyra let out a quiet breath and rubbed her forehead. "Wow," she said again softly. Mira stepped forward quickly. "But things changed," she said urgently. "I stopped telling her things about you weeks ago." Lyra looked up slowly. "Did you?" Selena chuckled. "She tried." Mira shot her a furious look. "I told you I was done!" Selena shrugged slightly. "You were useful while it lasted." Lyra stared at Mira for a long moment. The betrayal stung more than she wanted to admit. Finally she spoke again. "So let me get this straight," she said quietly. "The one person in this school I actually trusted… was planted by my biggest enemy." Mira's eyes filled with guilt. "Lyra I didn't expect to actually become your friend." Lyra laughed bitterly. "That makes it better?" "I mean it," Mira said. "I didn't think I'd start caring about you." Selena clapped slowly from the side. "This is touching. Truly." Lyra turned toward her again. "You're enjoying this way too much." Selena smiled. "Of course I am." Lyra exhaled slowly, then looked back at Mira. For a long moment she said nothing. The hallway remained completely silent as students watched the scene unfold. Finally Lyra shook her head and picked up her bag. "You know what the funny part is?" she said calmly. Mira looked at her nervously. "What?" Lyra smirked slightly. "I'm not even surprised." Mira blinked. "You're not?" Lyra shrugged. "People betray people. It happens." She walked past Mira without another word. But as she passed her, she added quietly, "The only question now is whether you were ever actually my friend… or just pretending." Mira stood frozen as Lyra walked away down the hallway. And for the first time since this whole story began… Lyra looked angry.
