The next morning at Ravenscroft Academy felt different. Not calm. Not tense. Just strange. Lyra noticed it the moment she walked through the gates. Students were whispering again, but this time the whispers weren't about her. They were about someone else. She passed two girls near the staircase. "Did you see her?" one whispered. "Yeah. I thought she'd never come back." Lyra slowed slightly but kept walking. Back? Interesting. Inside the hallway the tension felt thicker than usual. Students were gathered in small groups, glancing toward the main entrance like they were waiting for something. Or someone. Lyra opened her locker, pretending not to care. But curiosity had already started creeping into her mind. Footsteps approached behind her. "You look surprisingly calm for someone whose best friend just betrayed her yesterday." Lyra didn't turn around. "Good morning to you too, Selena." Selena leaned against the locker beside her. "You're handling it well," she said lightly. Lyra closed her locker and finally looked at her. "I'm handling it because I don't care." Selena smiled slowly. "Everyone cares about betrayal." Lyra shrugged. "Maybe I expected it." Selena studied her for a moment. Then her attention shifted past Lyra's shoulder. Something in Selena's expression changed. Very slightly. But Lyra noticed. That was the first strange thing. Selena Vale did not get surprised easily. Lyra followed her gaze down the hallway. Students had suddenly gone quiet. Someone had just walked in through the front doors. At first Lyra only saw dark hair. Then the crowd shifted. And the girl stepped fully into view. She was tall. Confident. Beautiful in a sharp effortless way. Long black hair fell down her back and her expression held a calm kind of power that made people step aside without even realizing it. But the strangest part wasn't how she looked. It was how everyone reacted. No one laughed. No one whispered. They just stared like something dangerous had just entered the room. Lyra leaned slightly toward Selena. "Friend of yours?" Selena didn't answer. Her jaw had tightened. Interesting. The new girl walked slowly down the hallway, her eyes scanning the room. Then she stopped. Right in front of Adrian. Lyra hadn't even noticed him standing there until now. Adrian had been leaning against the lockers with Darius like usual. But now he wasn't relaxed anymore. He was completely still. The girl smiled. Not warmly. More like she had just found something she had been looking for. "Well," she said softly. "It's been a while, Adrian." The hallway exploded into whispers. Lyra frowned slightly. Adrian didn't respond. He simply stared at her. Cold. Unreadable. But Lyra noticed something else. For the first time since she met him Adrian Vale looked tense. Darius muttered quietly beside him. "You've got to be kidding me." Lyra crossed her arms watching. The girl tilted her head slightly. "Not even a hello?" Adrian finally spoke. His voice was calm but colder than usual. "You weren't supposed to come back." The girl laughed softly. "Oh Adrian." She took one step closer to him. "You know I never listen." Lyra felt the tension in the hallway grow heavier. Selena suddenly spoke from beside her quietly. "This is bad." Lyra glanced at her. "You know her?" Selena didn't look away from the scene. "Yes." "Who is she?" Selena exhaled slowly. "The one person in this school more dangerous than me." Lyra blinked. That alone was shocking. Up ahead the mysterious girl turned her head slightly. Her eyes landed on Lyra. And she smiled like she had just discovered something interesting. "Well," she said. "Looks like things have gotten complicated while I was gone." Adrian's voice was sharp now. "Stay away from her." The girl's smile widened. "Oh?" She looked directly at Lyra again. "And why would I do that?" Adrian didn't answer but the warning in his eyes was clear. The girl chuckled softly. "This is going to be fun." And suddenly Lyra had the uncomfortable feeling that the chaos at Ravenscroft had only just begun.
