Chapter 366: Five Points
The light went long and gold across the square before anything changed. Kai sat with his back against the marker, watching the shadows of the four stones stretch east, and felt the cycle keep its count under him. Three. Pause. Two. Forty seconds, over and over, the way it had run since midday.
Then, just past the twelfth repeat since the letter left, the ground under his palm went cold.
Not painful. Specific. Five small points of cold, spaced apart, none of them where the markers stood.
He surfaced fast enough that Soren had his pen up before Kai finished sitting back.
"Five," Kai said. "Not three and two. Five separate points, all at once, all cold the same way."
"Cold how?" Soren was already moving toward the nearest one, instrument case swinging.
