The document you are reading is not the document that was written.
This is not an accusation. It is a statement of fact about how institutional documents work. Something is written. It is reviewed. It is amended. What reaches you has passed through several sets of hands, each of which left marks — some visible, some not. The visible marks in this edition are the Hollow Commission's amendments, noted throughout. The invisible marks are, by definition, not noted.

A note on the Hollow Commission's involvement in this document:
The Hollow Commission is an ancient institution — older than the Office of Thread Registration, older than the current Charter, older than most of the governmental structures that nominally oversee it. They study Thread. They have been studying Thread longer and more intensively than anyone else in recorded history. Their involvement in this document's review reflects their unparalleled expertise.
It also reflects their interest in controlling what the general public understands about Thread.
These two things are not mutually exclusive. The reader is invited to hold both simultaneously.

PART I · WHAT THREAD IS
The official position of the Office of Thread Registration:
Thread is a biomagnetic energy field produced by neurological activity in sapient organisms. It accumulates in the body's connective tissue over years of lived experience and can, under specific conditions of stress or training, be directed outward as a force modifier. Thread is not supernatural. Thread is a natural property of cognition.
HOLLOW COMMISSION NOTE: The above represents the approved public definition. It is sufficient for general understanding and has been the official position for one hundred and twelve years.
What Thread actually is:
Thread is the part of you that connects your choices to their consequences. The part that makes your past relevant to your future. The invisible filament that ties you to the people you love and the things you have done and the person you are becoming. It is not energy in the conventional sense. Calling it energy is the simplest available approximation, and like most simplifications, it is wrong in the ways that matter most.
Thread was given. This is the part the official position does not address. Something gave it to humanity — wove it into every living person as a gift, or a mechanism, or both. That something went silent four hundred years ago.
The Thread that is spent does not disappear. It returns somewhere. Something is ████████████████ [COMMISSION AMENDED] This has been understood for some time.

Thread does not replenish. This is the fact that the official position most carefully avoids stating directly. What you have is what you were born with, minus what you have spent over the course of your life. Most people spend it in small unconscious fractions — a moment of crisis, a burst of unnatural speed, a decision that felt larger than it should have. They die with most of their Thread intact, having never known it was there.
Practitioners spend it deliberately. The cost is always real. The cost is always, in some sense, themselves.
PART II · THE THREAD STATES
Thread States describe the condition of a practitioner's Thread — not their power level, not their training, not their Station. A State is what the Thread has become as a result of what the practitioner has lived through.
There are five States. This document describes four. The fifth has been removed from this edition at the Hollow Commission's request. Readers who notice the gap are encouraged to submit inquiries through registered channels.

WHOLE THREAD · Universal
Every living person has it. Almost no one knows it.
Whole Thread is Thread in its natural state — unmanipulated, undamaged, simply present. It responds only to need, not intent. It cannot be aimed because the person carrying it does not know there is anything to aim. When a mother's hands are suddenly, impossibly steady in a moment of danger to her child — that is Whole Thread. When a dying soldier's last strike lands harder than physics should allow — that is Whole Thread.
The tragedy of Whole Thread is not that it is weak. It is that most people will spend it over the course of ordinary lives, in small invisible fractions, never knowing what they were holding. They will die without knowing they were practitioners.
TECHNIQUES
None. Thread responds to crisis without direction.
DEGRADATION
Unconscious. Occurs across a lifetime without the practitioner's awareness.
ASCENSION
Possible — but only through a moment of genuine awareness that cannot be manufactured and cannot be reversed.
POPULATION
Universal. Every living person.
NAMED THREAD · Uncommon
The practitioner has listened to their Thread long enough to hear it answer.
Named Thread begins the moment a practitioner identifies the specific quality of their Thread — its texture, its tendency, the particular way it wants to move. Every Thread is different. One person's Thread runs hot and prefers sudden violent release. Another's runs cold and slow. A third's has a strange lateral quality — it doesn't push or pull, it redirects. These are not chosen. They are discovered.
Naming is not metaphorical. The practitioner must speak the quality of their Thread aloud — the truest, most precise word they can find. A Thread named Pressure when the practitioner actually means Patience will work poorly, forever, in ways the practitioner will never quite be able to diagnose. The closer the name to the truth, the more efficient every technique. The Name is therefore intelligence. Enemies who know your Name know something real about you.
Named Thread practitioners perform Resonance techniques — abilities that extend their Thread's quality outward into the world. A Thread named Fracture can extend hairline cracks through stone. A Thread named Memory can cause a person to re-experience a moment with full physical sensation. A Thread named Hunger can cause objects to attract each other gravitationally.
TECHNIQUES
Resonance — extension of the Thread's named quality into the external world.
DEGRADATION
Memory-based. The Thread takes relevant memories — precisely, not randomly. A Fire-named Thread takes memories of warmth. Over years, Named practitioners develop specific absences: skills that remain but whose emotional origins are gone.
REGISTRATION
All practitioners are required to file their Thread Name with the OTR. Current compliance rate:

SEVERED THREAD · Rare
A Severance is not a technique. It is a permanent alteration.
A Severed Thread practitioner has cut one of their own Thread-connections — the invisible filaments that link them to a specific person, place, relationship, or aspect of their own identity — and converted that severed bond into a permanent structural ability. The ability is not chosen. It is what that connection was made of.
A man who severs his connection to his homeland gains the ability to make any space feel like home to others — to change the emotional resonance of a room, to make strangers feel they have always known each other. He will never feel at home anywhere again. The ability is real. The loss is real. They are the same thing expressed differently.
Severed Thread abilities are unique, permanent, and deeply personal. No two Severances produce the same ability because no two connections are identical. This makes Severed Thread practitioners almost impossible to catalogue accurately and extremely difficult to prepare for in a conflict.
TECHNIQUES
Severance abilities — unique per practitioner.
DEGRADATION
The severed connection is permanently gone. The practitioner cannot miss it. They can only notice, sometimes, the shape of where it was.
THE UNBECOMING
Practitioners who Sever too many connections lose coherence. The Thread needs something to hold to. When there is nothing left, the practitioner stops — their body remains, their identity does not. The practitioner always knows when this is coming. Most say nothing.

BROKEN THREAD · Very Rare
There are two ways to arrive at Broken Thread. Neither is chosen.
The first: catastrophic external trauma so enormous it shattered the Thread rather than spending it. The Thread fractures under the weight and then — because it is still given and cannot simply vanish — reforms. But it reforms around the breaks. The cracks become load-bearing. The damage becomes structure.
The second: a practitioner who Severs too aggressively, approaching the Unbecoming, and instead of ceasing — breaks. The Thread shatters and rebuilds from the wreckage of what they already gave away.
Broken Thread produces Fracture techniques — abilities generated not by the Thread's natural quality but by the shape of its damage. A person whose Thread broke during a siege produces abilities shaped like sieges: slow encirclement, the cutting of supply lines, the collapse of walls from within. A person whose Thread broke during a betrayal produces abilities shaped like betrayal: the turning of loyalties, the revelation of hidden things, the moment when trusted structures fail.
The cost of Broken Thread is physical and cumulative. The Fractures externalize onto the body. Bones develop hairline cracks that do not heal cleanly. Joints deteriorate. The body becomes an archive of every technique ever performed, written in calcium and cartilage. All confirmed Broken Thread practitioners report constant physical pain. This does not decrease over time.
TECHNIQUES
Fracture techniques — enormous output, shaped by the nature of the original trauma.
DEGRADATION
Physical. Permanent. Cumulative. The body pays what the Thread no longer can.
CONTROL
Broken Thread practitioners cannot fully regulate output. A technique meant for one target may affect everyone nearby. They learn to aim. They never learn to guarantee.

PART III · THE FIVE STATIONS
The Stations were not designed. They were noticed. They describe what a practitioner has become after spending enough of a specific category of self. Ascension is not achieved through training or accumulation of technique. It is arrived at — when there is nothing left of the current Station to spend.
Most people will never leave the First Station. This document is written for everyone, including those people. Understanding the Stations is not the same as ascending them.
FIRST STATION · THE INHABITED · Universal
Every person is born here. The self is full. The Thread is untouched.
The First Station is not weakness. It is wholeness. An Inhabited person is the most completely themselves they will ever be. Their past and future are tightly woven together. Their connections to others are dense and genuine. They grieve with their entire self because their entire self is present and available to grieve.
The tragedy of the First Station is only visible in retrospect. The Inhabited cannot do anything with what they have. The Thread is full, and locked, and responds only to crisis — without direction, without memory of the moment, the way water responds to gravity. Something is there. Nothing can be done with it yet.
WHAT IS RETAINED
Everything. The complete self.
WHAT IS LOST
Access. The Thread cannot be directed.
ASCENSION
The moment of genuine awareness — when a person feels their own Thread with enough clarity to know it is there and that it is theirs. This moment cannot be manufactured. Once it occurs, the practitioner cannot return.
SECOND STATION · THE AWARE · Uncommon
The self has been noticed. The Thread has been touched.
The Second Station begins with a single moment: the practitioner feels their Thread with enough clarity to know it is there, that it is theirs, and that it is something other than ordinary sensation. When this happens, the Thread responds by shifting — a slow interior reorganisation, like a river finding a new path. It does not hurt. According to every account, it feels like being recognised by something that has always known you were there, and was simply waiting for you to notice it back.
The Aware can feel other Threads in proximity. Not read them, not see them — feel them. The rough density and quality of a Thread in another person. This sense is imprecise and exhausting to maintain, but it exists, and it changes how a practitioner moves through the world permanently.
WHAT IS RETAINED
Most of the self. Core connections and memories remain.
WHAT IS LOST
The comfort of unknowing. The specific quality of being fully in one's own life without sensing the architecture beneath it.
ASCENSION REQUIREMENT
A real cost — something spent on something that mattered. Not quantity of Thread used. What it was used for. The Thread knows the difference between currency and blood.
THIRD STATION · THE SPENT · Rare
The self has given something it cannot recover.
The Third Station does not announce itself. A practitioner arrives here and often does not know they have arrived until they attempt a technique they could not perform the week before and find it simply — possible. What happened in the week before was not training. It was loss. A loss large enough that the Thread reorganised around the absence.
The content of the cost is different for every practitioner. The nature is always the same: something real was released. Not spent on a technique. Simply released. A connection deliberately severed not for power but because continuing it would have required becoming someone smaller. A grief fully felt and not flinched from. A hope abandoned from honesty rather than despair. The Thread reads this as permission.
WHAT IS RETAINED
Core identity. The ability to form new connections — but every new connection carries a slightly provisional quality now. The Spent know, without saying it, that connections are things that can be released.
WHAT IS LOST
Specific and permanent. The shape of the absence becomes part of who the practitioner is.
CAPABILITIES
Named Thread fully manifests. Severances become possible. Genuine, repeatable, personal ability begins here.
FOURTH STATION · THE HOLLOWED · Very Rare
The self has been structurally altered. What remains is not less — it is different in kind.
Ascension to the Fourth Station requires what practitioners call the Core Expenditure: releasing not a connection or a grief, but the foundational self-conception. The belief that has organised everything else. The story a person has told themselves about who they are since childhood. Not a surface identity — the load-bearing wall.
The behaviour persists afterward. The meaning of the behaviour is gone. A warrior who releases the identity of protector continues to protect. But they do so because they have decided to — not because being a protector is what they fundamentally are. Every action becomes fully chosen. None of them are driven by need anymore.
The Hollowed are uncanny to be around. Not frightening — uncanny. They are fully present and completely undesperate. Nothing they do has the quality of need in it. People find this either deeply comforting or profoundly unsettling, and there appears to be no middle ground.
WHAT IS RETAINED
Function. Skill. The ability to form genuine connections — now chosen rather than needed.
WHAT IS LOST
The organising story. The practitioner is the same person in every measurable way, but without the narrative that made them coherent to themselves.
THE LONG REST
A specific trap of the Fourth Station. The Thread, finding no organising principle to work around, becomes very still. The practitioner is not ill — they are waiting. The Long Rest can last years. Some Hollowed mistake it for having arrived at the end of something. They stop. They never leave.

PART IV · THE THREE NATURES
A Thread's Nature is its innate quality — what it is before any technique, training, or cost. Natures are not chosen. They are discovered. The Thread already knew. The practitioner is catching up.
Natures are orthogonal to States and Stations. A Binding Thread at the Fourth Station and a Severing Thread at the Fourth Station have paid the same category of cost but arrived somewhere entirely different. What the Station describes is depth of investment. What the Nature describes is direction.
BINDING THREAD · Nature
Thread that naturally tends toward connection. It pulls things together, reinforces bonds, makes structures more stable. At low Stations, Binding Thread manifests as unusual reliability — the practitioner's constructions last longer, their relationships develop stability, their word carries weight. At the Named level and beyond, Binding Threads can create connections between things that have no natural relationship.
At the Hollowed level, a Binding Thread can reinforce concepts — bind a person to a truth so completely that they cannot act against it. Not compulsion. Something more like weight. The truth becomes as real to them as gravity.
RESONANCE QUALITY
Connective. Reinforcing. Stabilising.
AT DEPTH
Conceptual binding. Reality enforcement. The practitioner does not argue with you. They make the truth heavier.
SEVERING THREAD · Nature
Thread that naturally tends toward separation. Not destruction — separation. The difference matters. A Severing Thread does not shatter. It distinguishes. It finds the exact place where two things are falsely connected and removes the false bond.
At Named level, a Severing Thread practitioner can separate a person from their own emotions temporarily — cutting grief out of a room so that everyone inside simply cannot access it, as if the word has no referent. At depth, a Severing Thread can remove a concept from a space entirely.
RESONANCE QUALITY
Separating. Clarifying. Isolating.
AT DEPTH
Conceptual severance. The removal of a truth from a space. Not lying — severing the connection between a fact and the minds in proximity to it.

CARRYING THREAD · Nature · Rare
The rarest Nature. Thread that neither binds nor severs but holds — not connection or disconnection, but the state of being in transit. Carrying Threads interact with time in unusual ways. Not by moving through it. By suspending things within it.
A Carrying Thread practitioner can hold a moment — keep a dying person alive past the moment of death long enough for a final conversation, preserve an object in the exact state it occupied at a specific moment, hold a decision open past the point at which circumstances would have collapsed it. Everything they touch lasts longer than it should. Including, eventually, their own grief.
RESONANCE QUALITY
Suspending. Preserving. Extending.
AT DEPTH
Temporal anchoring. A Carrying Thread practitioner at the Fourth Station can hold a moment in place for everyone in proximity — suspending a death, a decision, a revelation — long enough to change what happens next.
POPULATION
Fewer than 1 in 50,000 practitioners. All confirmed Carrying Thread practitioners are considered of significant interest to the Hollow Commission.

PART V · THREAD BIND
A Thread Bind is not a contract. Contracts have escape clauses.
When a person offers a Thread Bind, they are taking the portion of their Thread that represents their future — the unlived years, the choices not yet made, the relationships that would have happened — and giving it to someone else to spend. The Thread Bearer who accepts gains access to enormous output, drawn not from their own Thread but from the Bound's remaining life.
THE HOLLOW
When the future is spent, the body remains. Breathing continues. The heart continues. But the Thread is gone — fully reclaimed — and without Thread, a person is not a person in any meaningful sense. They are matter that was once organised around an identity. The organisation persists out of biological habit. Nothing is home anymore.
This state is called the Hollow. The Hollow does not suffer. Suffering requires a self to do the suffering. The Hollow can live for years.
Most practitioners who witness the Hollow for the first time never accept another Bind offer.
THE CRITICAL CONSTRAINT
A Bind cannot be coerced. The Thread knows the difference. A Bind performed under direct threat or deception produces nothing — the future offered is not freely given and will not surrender.
Every Thread Bind in history has been a choice. Desperate, sometimes. Unaware of the full consequence, sometimes. But chosen.
This means every Hollow was once a person who looked at the Thread Bearer and decided they were worth it. The Bearer carries that. Not as power. As weight.
LEGAL STATUS
Thread Bind is legal in seven of twelve Charter territories. In the remaining five it is regulated, not prohibited. It is not prohibited anywhere.
REGISTRATION
Thread Bearers are required to register all accepted Binds with the OTR within thirty days.

PART VI · DEATH, THREAD, AND THE PROBLEM OF RETURN
The Office of Thread Registration does not formally address death in its classification literature. Death is where Thread exits the Directorate's jurisdiction. What happens to Thread after detachment has been categorised as theological and therefore outside institutional mandate.
This section exists because someone decided it should. The Hollow Commission approved it. The reasons for both decisions are not documented.
NORMAL DEATH IN DEORUM
At the moment of death, the Thread detaches from the body and disperses into the ambient weave of Deorum — feeding back into the living mass of the world. The body decays. This is the natural cycle.
Most Severers age normally, if sometimes slower than the general population. The Thread sustains the body to some degree — a secondary function, likely unintended. A Severer who stops practising will age faster for a period before normalising, as though the body reclaims the years the Thread had been holding at bay.
THE KNOTTING RITUAL
HOLLOW COMMISSION PROPRIETARY TECHNIQUE · OPERATIONAL USE CONFIRMED NO FEWER THAN FOUR THOUSAND YEARS PRIOR
The Knotting Ritual is the Hollow Commission's anchoring technique. The Thread is knotted to the body at a structural level through a process that requires the subject's Thread to have been damaged to near-breaking point before application.
The mechanism: a Thread damaged to near-dissolution cannot complete its natural detachment at death. Instead it pulls. The body, still anchored to the Thread, is drawn back together around it. The process is neither clean nor fast. The subject regenerates in full awareness.
There is no record of a subject who found this peaceful.
MECHANISM
Thread knotted to body at structural level. Prevents natural detachment at death. Body regenerates around the anchored Thread.
PREREQUISITE
Subject's Thread must be damaged to near-breaking point prior to application.
REVERSAL
Theoretically possible. Requires a Dead Thread practitioner to manipulate the Knot directly.

WHAT EXTENDED CYCLES PRODUCE
The Commission's own records document that extended Knotting cycles — subjects who have undergone the process many times — produce diminishing research returns after a certain threshold. The subject ceases to respond to standard stimuli. Their Thread stops producing the signatures the Commission's methodology was designed to study.
The Commission interpreted this as degradation.
What extended cycles actually produce is not degradation. It is completion. Every damage-response a Thread can have is eventually mapped, exhausted, and surpassed. What remains is a Thread that has been broken so many times it has rebuilt itself into a configuration no existing instrument can read.
The Commission's instruments measured silence. They concluded absence. They were measuring something their instruments were not built to see.

CLOSING NOTE
The reader who has arrived at this page has received the approved understanding of Thread — sufficient for general practice, sufficient for daily life, sufficient for everything the Hollow Commission considers it necessary for general practitioners to know.
The reader who has been paying attention has also received something else: the shape of what is not here. The Fifth Station entry that exists only as a title. The compliance rates that vanished between draft and print. The subject numbers that are classified above this clearance level. The Commission's oversight role that is apparently not relevant to general practitioners. The extended cycle files that are simply redacted without explanation.
Information is not only what is present. It is also the shape of what is absent. This document has a shape. The reader is invited to consider it.
A final note, which the Hollow Commission's Content Approval Division will notice and will not remove, because removing it would confirm what it implies:
The Hollow Commission has been present in the world for longer than any other institution. They have studied Thread longer, more intensively, and with more subjects than anyone else. They know more about what Thread is and what it costs and where it goes than this document contains.
They approved this document.
Ask yourself what that means about what they chose not to approve.
