Chapter 45 - The bullet that broke the Druin

The darkness was suffocating, the endless expanse opening up in front of them, the ships slowly pulling away from their view.

Sharp and angular, they drifted as the small craft made its way further into the reaches of space.

Inside the ship the quiet hum of the engine whirled its way around the cockpit, the two men inside still not daring to breathe, the darkness seeping into the deepest corners of the cockpit.

The two travelled for longer and longer until they were sure they were outside of the range of the ships, when the cockpit lit up like a Christmas tree. Blinking and flashing, the cockpit was bathed in red light constantly flashing.

The two looked between one another, locking onto the fear in each others eyes.

The screen in front of them showing their surrounding red dots littering the space behind them.

"Fuck. Are we far enough away?" Seth asked Mongrel with doubt creeping into his mind, this had gone far better then he could have ever hoped for, his luck seemed to have turned against him.

"We are further than their weapons, but they are pursuing us. I am not sure I can out run them"

"How long can we go on for?"

"Not long and we cannot go into human space, that would start a war"

"Where will we go, we have to shake them off quick" Seth said the fear of not being able to complete this mission taking hold in his heart. He needed to complete this alive otherwise Maria would be on the hook and he would be dead, making her sacrifice in vain.

"We can jump" replied Mongrel, looking at the door.

"Are you insane?"

"We jumped into the Druin ship"

"Yes but we knew where the ship was, can you identify were the ship we came on is?" asked Seth.

"Not in this mess of ships and darkness" yelled Mongrel back at Seth.

Seth looked at the space around him wondering were he would be able to jump and if he would survive.

Mongrel looked around at the space as well. He knew he would not be able to find the ship unless he would find the beacon.

The ship would not dare to expose itself thorough revealing the beacon as it would bring down the whole armada on their head. They would not allow that to happen, they would be willing to sacrifice Seth and Mongrel and probably 100 other people to save themselves.

Seth looked out trying to find any planet or star that he would be able to identify. If he could find something that looked familiar he would be able to guess which direction he would jump in. He could take the chance of the open space then take the chance of the Druin ships.

Seth shifted his eyes left to right trying to find anything on the monitors, even a slight formation of the planets that looked familiar, but alas, he had not paid attention to the planets and the armada had travelled quite a distance since they infiltrated the elder's ship.

"What direction are we going to jump into?" Seth asked as he looked around trying to find any hope he could cling onto.

Mongrel looked at the sides moving quickly on the control panel the buttons smashed as hard and as fast as he could, breaking the humans components, but he did not stop, only moving faster.

"Just a little bit more" he mumbled as he slammed down on the last button which still looked functional.

Seconds dragged on as the ship hummed and did nothing more. The control panel did not change and the ship sped in the direction it was going.

"What was that?" asked Seth, looking at the destroyed panels in front of him

The ship began to slow, not moving anymore. The humming of the engine spluttering out, the silence of the space held the cockpit hostage.

"Give me that" said Mongrel as he plugged a cord into the gauntlet on Seth's wrist.

"What are you doing?"

"Something that will draw all their attention" he said as the conduit lit up and a pulse of blue light left his gauntlet.

The blue light travelled into the console and the whole panel slowly turned blue, a wave from the connection port. The ship around them intensified and turned dark crimson vindictive red.

The crimson light subsided and the ship began to glow with blue light, cascading on the two, the ship having reached crescendo of ultramarine blue. Suddenly, a void opened within the blinding light and no blue or red was left, the ship's engine silent, the humming erased, hammering home the lifelessness of the ship.

A bright bream of light was projected across the surface of the ships hot on its tail.

The face that welcomed them was none other then the dead elder's face.

Moments before his dead, Seth had captured and now it was being replayed for all to see.

"Why are you doing this this? Do you want money? I can give it to you, I have enough. Whatever amount you want" The sentence was cut short with a bullet to his brain, the confusion and fear still etched upon his face as he took his last breath.

The Druin upon the ships angered by the sight of their beloved elder dying were in a state of shock, unsure of what to do but their attention was solidly on the elder's face trying to figure out if this was fake, if their elder had promised these humans money in order to maintain his own life.

...

"Come on, now is ya chance" Mumbled Mongrel as he looked on his wrist screen scanning the space around them.

Seconds scrapped by, slow and long, the time felt like a pit of tar, impossible to escape.

When suddenly a light appeared on the screen.

"YEEEEES!" Screamed Mongrel, his arms and spit waving through the air. Showing Seth the screen they both knew what it meant, the human ship had sent the location to them.
