"Shadow Clone Jutsu!"
A puff of white smoke erupted across the tawny hills, as a dozen identical copies surrounded the red-eyed doppelgänger.
"Wow. I am so surprised you went for the shadow clone jutsu," Yami said sarcastically.
"Then get surprised by this ass-whooping!" Naruto yelled. He and his clones surged forward simultaneously.
Yami channeled a concentrated burst of Cursed Energy to the sole of his foot. The energy spiraled launching Yami into a horizontal spin kick. The movement was that of human cyclone. One by one, every single clone was popped into white smoke. The kick concluded against the original Naruto's ribs, throwing him violently across the field.
"Your numbers advantage is just an illusion in your mind, dumbass," Yami chastised. "What good is an army if it goes down in one punch? What good is that army if it has to operate with your piss-poor skills?"
"I'll show you skills!" Naruto growled, jerking his hand back. A chain tore through the golden reeds straight for Yami's throat.
Despite being caught entirely off guard by the sudden weapon, the jungian shadow snapped his head back.
"How did you create a chain in this innate domain?"
"What the hell is an innate domain?!" Naruto shot back, spinning the chain above his head like a lasso.
"Just tell me how you have that chain!"
"See for yourself!" Naruto yelled, whipping it forward again.
Yami raised his forearm to block as Cursed Energy spiraled heavily upon his skin. But the moment the metal links struck his arm, there was no struggle. The entire chain instantly dissolved into a clone then a smoke cloud. Yami's eyes widened slightly in realization. Naruto hadn't created a weapon out of thin air. He had ordered a shadow clone to use the Transformation Jutsu before their very first exchange, hiding it in the field until the perfect moment.
From the center of the dissolving smoke cloud, four clones rushed out. One clone launched Yami upward.
"NA—"
Three more clones kicked him further up.
"—RU"
—TO!"
They yelled in unison executing the combo as the real Naruto leaped off the shoulders of another clone to chase his target into the sky.
Yami and the original met high in the air. Naruto expected to see panic, but instead a dark smile spread across their face. Yami spat a white glob at him while forming a handsign. The original's disgusted expression quickly morphed into pure shock. The white globe molding itself into a floating, chalk-white ghost. It lacked legs, tapering off into a wispy tail, but its face was that of Naruto's.
The boy instinctively threw up his arms to block a punch from the apparition. The moment their limbs crossed, that same spiraling effect broke through Naruto's guard.
SHING!
A massive Fuma Shuriken came spinning out of nowhere. The shuriken transformed back into its clone form, throwing a heavy punch that popped the ghost. The shadow clone frowned as the ghost turned into a strange smoke. This smoke felt eerily similar to the residue left behind when you killed a cursed spirit.
Meanwhile, the original Naruto was caught by a safety net of his remaining clones.
"You think these stupid tricks are gonna help you survive?"
"At least these tricks are my own, you cheater!" Naruto yelled.
"Cheater?"
"Yeah! You're supposed to be me, yet somehow you have all of these crazy new abilities!"
"I don't have new abilities," Yami Naruto said, holding up a single open palm. "These are our abilities, but powered by Cursed Energy rather than Chakra."
"Ah..." Naruto grunted, a sudden realization hitting him. The ghost Naruto was just a Shadow Clone formed entirely out of Cursed Energy. But what about that weird spiral attack thing?
The boy didn't have time to think about it. Yami Naruto created a CE rasengan. As an orb of orange and gold energy began hovering above his fingertips. Naruto bared his teeth. A shadow clone helped him construct his blue Rasengan.
"What are you gonna do with that small thing?" Naruto taunted as Yami's Cursed Energy Rasengan was the size of a golf ball.
"It's not about the size, Naruto. It's about how you use it," Yami sai, pointing his index finger forward like a gun.
To everyone's absolute shock, the tiny orange sphere didn't require him to run forward. The spiral inside it compressed to a microscopic point. With a deafening CRACK, the Cursed Energy Rasengan fired outward as a beam.
The attack consisted of two distinct energy components fired simultaneously. The center was a straight orange laser. While a second beam coiled tightly around it like a golden corkscrew.
Naruto didn't back down. With a ferocious roar, he matched the incoming beam with his own spinning blue Rasengan.
BOOM!
The clash of blue, orange, and gold lit up the entire autumn sky. Naruto's Rasengan was struggling to hold its shape against the piercing focus of Yami's attack. The attack acted like a high-velocity drill, biting directly into the center of the blue orb.
Ths sheer pressure creating a dome of destruction around them.
During the clash, the remaining shadow clones sprinting through the field in a coordinated pincer attack. Leaping from the left and right, the clones converged on Yami Naruto from his blind spots.
"Gotcha!" they yelled, swinging kicks at his head. Yami released the beam, letting the residual explosion blow the original Naruto backward, and swung his arms outward. With a flare of his spiraling Cursed Energy, he struck the clones dead-center.
POP!
POP!
They vanished into white smoke instantly, but they had bought the original exactly what he needed: a closing window.
Naruto and Yami Naruto stared at each other through the clearing smoke. Despite the exhaustion and injuries, their eyes locked with one another.
Without a single word, they rushed into a taijutsu brawl. Both sides possessed the same foundational skillset. So they moved like mirrors—parrying punches, dodging sweeps, and matching blocks.
Unfortunately for the original, the playing field was unfair.
Every time Yami landed a blow, his spiraling Cursed Energy left Naruto significantly more injured. A simple jab from Yami twisted Naruto's skin, tearing at his muscle fibers and leaving jagged lacerations. Still, despite the compounding pain, injuries, and fatigue, Naruto refused to stay down.
"Why do you keep standing up?!" Yami yelled, as he deflected another desperate left hook. He drove a spiraling knee directly into Naruto's stomach, folding the boy in half. "Look at you! You're broken! You have no talent, no shortcuts, and no demon fox to save you here! Just give up and let me lead! Give up!"
Naruto coughed violently, the impact dropping him to one knee. He stared at the dirt for a fraction of a second. But as Yami stepped in to finish it, Naruto's fingers dug into the earth.
"Like hell I will!"
Using the momentum of his entire body to drive his forehead squarely into Yami's nose with a sickening CRACK.
Yami stumbled back.
"I don't care if I'm hitting a wall, and I don't care if I don't have a shortcut! I've never given up on myself, and I'm sure as hell not starting with a cynical bastard like you!"
"They'll fear you!" Yami tackled Naruto to the ground. And began raining punches onto his face. "Once they find out about the Kyuubi, they will hate you just like Konoha!"
PUNCH.
PUNCH.
"Hahahaha..."
Through the blood and the bruising, Naruto just laughed.
"I didn't give up... when the people of... Konoha... hated me," Naruto forced the words out in between gasping breaths. "People who never even... had the chance... to know me. Geto-san... the twins... and everyone else... they won't fear me!"
"AND WHAT IF THEY DO?!"
"Then I'll show them the difference between me and the fox! A king doesn't run away just because things get tough, dattebayo!"
With a sudden surge of adrenaline, Naruto slammed his palms into Yami's chest, successfully pushing the doppelgänger off to the side. The boy could barely even stand though. Falling back to the earth, he literally crawled through the golden grass toward Yami inch by inch. There was absolutely no stopping him.
"You win."
Naruto paused. Before he could even question his doppelgänger, glowing ink-like scripts began to ripple across the air. Giant seals began to manifest around Yami.
"What's... going on?"
"I was always the unconscious aspect of your personality that you rejected," Yami replied "You didn't want to hate the Konoha villagers for what they did to you, so you suppressed me. You locked your hatred away."
Naruto's eyes widened.
"Remember what happened just before you came to Japan?" Yami asked, the glowing script crawling further up his neck.
"I... I pushed Sasuke out of that black hole thing."
"And inside that black hole thing, you attained Cursed Energy," Yami revealed. "But to keep your sanity intact from the trauma, Dad managed to seal away those memories. The Cursed Energy that formed out of those locked-away memories... gave me form."
"Wait! How do I stop this? Let me help—"
Yami smiled, shaking his head at the absurdity of it. "I can't believe that you want to help me... even after everything I just did to you."
"Why not?" Naruto asked, offering a bloody goofy grin through his exhaustion. "You're me, aren't you?"
"I'm giving you the crown for now," Yami Naruto said, his voice starting to echo as the seal crept over his face. "But don't you ever forget... if you drop it, if you slack off, or if you slip up even once... I'll drag you down and crush your head into the dirt! Don't forget that... Because next time we meet... it'll be your end."
With a final flash of light, Yami Naruto was consumed by the seal.
Naruto rolled onto his back, staring up at the sky as the endless sea of reeds rustled around him. He closed his eyes, letting the darkness take him.

"Thank you for coming to see me so late at night."
Doctor Kurosawa Reika was a diminutive woman, yet she carried herself with an imposing authority. Her silver hair was pulled back into a bun, and a pair of,half-moon reading glasses sat on her nose.
"Is everything okay with Naruto?" Suda asked.
It had been a full week since the Aogashima incident, and the boy had yet to wake up.
"That is precisely why I called you both," Doctor Kurosawa said, sliding a thick medical file across her mahogany desk. "If I may... what exactly is your relation to the patient?"
"Legal guardians."
"I see," the doctor said, adjusting her glasses as she noted the duo. Naruto's case was unprecedented for The University of Tokyo Hospital. Rather than passing through the standard referral system or being processed through the frantic chaos of the regular ER. He had been admitted into the VIP wing under the heavy-handed authority of Politician Kanemoto.
"Now, when the patient was admitted, we were not provided with any prior medical history," Doctor Kurosawa stated. "Before I continue with the findings, may I ask where the patient is from?"
Geto raised an eyebrow. "He is from an isolated village within the northernmost mountains of Japan."
"Riiight," the doctor replied, her voice dripping with skepticism. "Upon his arrival, our immediate priority was baseline stabilization. Because he was completely unresponsive to external stimuli, we placed him on a closed-circuit ventilator and initiated a standard 'coma cocktail'."
Suda nodded.
"When he remained in a deep coma despite those interventions, we moved to intensive diagnostic testing. We hooked him up to an EEG to map his neurological activity. The results were... alarming."
"How so?"
"His brainwaves were firing in rhythmic bursts that should be impossible for a comatose patient. Physically, he is completely motionless, but neurologically his brain is acting as if he is in an intense situation. Like fighting a high-stress war inside his own mind."
Geto hummed under his breath. An unpleasant thought crossed his mind. Did my gamble push the boy too far? Don't tell me I shot myself in the foot due to my own ignorance. If the entity inside Naruto had broken the boy, Gashadokuro's deployment would be a catastrophic waste.
"But the true reason I called you here tonight is what we discovered during the boy's broader medical screening," Doctor Kurosawa Reika said. "To put it plainly... Naruto is not a Homosapien."
