CHAPTER START---

KRA-KOOM!

A single yellow lightning bolt is shot into the lake behind the guild hall, disturbing the water slightly before immediately dissipating.

And high above, at the edge of the cliff, two young boys are standing at the edge watching the result.

Well, one was standing, the other was floating with his legs crossed.

"So did you choose Lightning Magic because of that scar or was it a coincidence?" Oberon asks.

Laxus gives him an annoyed look. "It's just a coincidence, I guess. Why does everyone always think it's because of my Magic?"

"Because you shoot lighting and have a lightning bolt scar over your right eye," Oberon shrugs.

"Oh yeah, well, does your hair look all weird like that because of your Magic?"

"Obviously," Oberon says, as if it were common sense. "My Magic looks like the night sky and my hair matches. That's not a coincidence."

Laxus folds his arms and looks away. "Yeah, I guess that makes sense, so what cool spells do you know, anyway?"

"Well, I've been learning light and gravity shields, oh, and I can shoot a beam of light!"

"My grandpa does that light beam thing all the time, anything else?"

"Uh," Oberon thinks for a moment. "Well, those are the only flashy ones. Gravity Magic can't really be seen, but I could make you float... sort of."

"That sounds awesome, do it!" Laxus smiles brightly.

"Alright, just stay still," Oberon stops floating to stand on the grass, and raises his hands toward Laxus.

His Magic Circle appears below his feet for a moment before disappearing, then Laxus suddenly feels himself rising off the ground.

"Uh...ugh!" Laxus groans and gets a sour look on his face, as if he was about to throw up.

"Sorry!" Oberon immediately sets him back down. "Did I shake you too much?"

"No," Laxus takes a few deep breaths. "Motion sickness, that's all."

"A Wizard with motion sickness? Then how will you take the trains?"

"I hate taking the trains, but I guess I'll have to deal with it," Laxus says as he gets back up.

"Can you do that thing where you turn into a bolt of lightning and fly around?" Oberon asks as he quickly creates a Magic Circle and begins floating once again.

"Well, I'm not supposed to do that yet. Grandpa is still teaching me some other stuff first, but... I've tried it a few times."

"Do it!" Oberon immediately gets excited at the thought of this. "C'mon, I've always heard about this and wanted to see it. You'll be great!"

"Mmmm," Laxus looks at the guildhall on the other side of the field for a moment, then makes up his mind. "Alright, just this once."

"Yeah!"

Laxus closes his eyes and focuses on his Magic, and a Magic Circle of yellow runes appears below his feet.

Yellow lightning sparks around him as he pushes off the ground and shoots forward.

He travels all of 1 meter before transforming into a bolt of lightning, then before he could clear another meter, he reverts and tumbles onto the floor.

He ends his roll face first in the grass.

"Hahahahaha," Oberon immediately starts laughing, so hard that he loses focus and finds himself face-first in the grass as well.

And he immediately hears Laxus laughing at him.

"I'm still not used to flying," Oberon says as he gets up, dusting himself off.

"Yeah, well, Lightning Transformation is super high level, so I'm far from getting it down too," Laxus says as he gets up.

"How long have you been a member of Fairy Tail?" Oberon asks. "Did Master Makarov have you join as a baby like him?"

"I wish. He made me wait till I turned 6, so only 2 years. But I only recently started to really use Magic."

"That's still so cool, getting to learn all kinds of Magic and stuff from your grandpa," Oberon says with a serene look on his face.

"Nah, it's super lame," Laxus says. "He's always trying to get me to read books and stuff. He won't even let me go on any jobs yet. It sucks..."

"Yeah, I guess that makes sense," Oberon says with a thoughtful look. "I guess I just think it's cool cause' before Acnologia, we didn't really have much of this kind of Magic.

I mean, dad tried to teach me everything he could, but I can tell he wasn't a good teacher just from how Master talks about him. He never says anything bad, but...it's like I have to relearn everything the proper way now. I just figured it'd be cool to learn Magic with your family, like you, you know?"

Laxus sighs. "Yeah, I guess I am pretty lucky. It just really sucks always being called 'Makarov's grandson', and things like that. It's all I've ever been."

"I think it's pretty cool, having a grandpa that's one of the strongest Wizards in Ishgar, in the world actually," Oberon says. "Both my grandpas worked in the iron mine."

"Yeah, that sounds pretty lame," Laxus says.

"Hey!"

"Sorry sorry, I didn't mean anything bad by it, I swear," he raises his hands in surrender.

"Yeah, whatever." Oberon rolls his eyes.

"Grandpa says you came to Fairy Tail to train with him. That's why he's spending so much time with you. Is that true?"

Oberon gives Laxus a strange look. "Yeah, why else would he be spending so much time with me? He's the best at Light Magic and I want to be stronger, stronger than any Wizard ever..."

"Stronger than grandpa? That's impossible."

"No it's not. He even said I could do it!" Oberon argues.

"No way, he's invincible!"

"Then I'll be more invincible!"

"That's not a thing!"

"I'll make it a thing!"

They both glare at each other for a moment, and the tension in the air rises until they both just 'humph' and look away, toward the lake.

"Why do you even want to be so strong anyway, for bigger jobs?" Laxus asks.

"Why are you so nosey?"

"Hey, I'm trying to be nice! Didn't anyone tell you to respect your elders? I'm like three months older than you."

"That doesn't count."

"Yes it does!"

"No, it doesn't!"

"Yes, it does! Just tell me why you want to be so strong already!"

"Because of Acnologia!" Oberon yells, and Laxus's eyes widen.

"You want to hunt a Dragon?"

"No, but Master and Gildarts say there isn't a Wizard stronger than it, so I just need to become stronger than any Wizard, right? Then, if it ever shows up again, I won't lose anything or anyone, right?"

Laxus glances over at Oberon, seeing how serious he was, then shakes his head. "You're such a weirdo, you actually want to fight that thing. Don't you know only Dragon Slayers can kill Dragons?"

"Dragon Slayer? How do you become a Dragon Slayer before killing a Dragon? That's so stupid."

"It's—" Laxus cuts himself off, not wanting to say too much. "Forget it. But you can't even sense Magic. You're fighting with such a big handicap. How will you even deal with that so you can get strong enough to fight a Dragon?"

"Uhh, well, I haven't really figured that part out yet, but I will."

Laxus thinks about it for a while, then nods in agreement. "Being the strongest sounds pretty fun, and people will stop calling me 'Makarov's grandson'. Ok, I'll do that."

"What? Hey how am I supposed to be the strongest if you're the strongest? That's not how it works!"

"Well, I dunno, I just need to be stronger than grandpa," Laxus says. "Anyway, I need to go finish rehearsing for tonight. See ya after the parade."

"Yeah, good luck," Oberon says as Laxus walks away.

As Laxus is leaving, Oberon closes his eyes and continues meditation.

'Honestly, I expected Master Makarov's grandson to be some super muscly mega powerful Wizard kid... or a super tiny one, maybe bald too. But that kid seemed... normal. More normal than most of the people in this guild, at least.

But no way am I gonna let him get ahead of me!'

Oberon walks to the edge of the cliff and looks out at the lake, taking a few deep breaths as an idea forms in his mind.

With much hesitation, he jumps over the edge, taking the 100m drop to the lake below.

'I was fine before, so I should be fine,' he thinks while falling, then realizes. 'No, I will be fine! Magic demands confidence, just like Master Makarov said!'

As he sees the water approaching, he focuses his Gravity Magic through his body, and quickly slows his fall.

Slowed to where he stopped just above the surface of the calm water, leaning forward and looking down to see his reflection staring up at him.

With a joyful smile, he takes a step forward, walking on the surface of the water.

"Making myself lighter than water is good. Now I just need to keep this up while I practice everything else."

He looks up at the cliff high above and lets out a deep exhale.

"One week ago I was just another kid trapped in a mountain village. Now I'm a Fairy Tail Wizard, and one day, I'll be the strongest in the guild..."
