Chapter 1 - Same old, Same old

Nyx woke up thinking today would be like all the rest since she came of age. Training. More Training. As the granddaughter of the original Nyx, goddess of night, she knew that she had many things to learn as she was blessed by her grandmother to be the next ruler of the night. Named after her grandmother because her enchanting beauty is quite similar to the night itself. She had a heart shaped face with small almond eyes. They were the color of the starless sky. Glossy raven black hair with soft lilac tips and pink lips as if she was kissed by a pink rose. Her twin brother born only 3 minutes after her was her exact match only the difference of soft brown locks instead of her midnight black. Before she came of age she would spend her nights gazing at the stars and the constitutions with her twin brother. They would talk about nothing but what powers they would be granted and how they would do great things as the next generation of gods. Never in their wildest dreams did they think Nyx would be chosen as the successor to an original Titan. It's never happened in their history.

Well that was the past. It's time to get ready to see grandmother and start practicing on moving creatures in the shadows. Sitting up she heard a knock on the door. ''Moon! Are you up yet !'' called Phoebus. ''Mother made our favorite breakfast. If you don't hurry there won't be any left for you.'' He said. That greedy pig. Always out to steal my meals. She hopped up and dressed in a flash. She all but ran to the dining hall. '' There better be at least 4 pieces of bacon left Phoebus. Or so help me you will be stuck in an endless night.'' She all but hollered at her brother. In the dining hall waiting at the table was her mother, Venus, her father, Phaestus, her brother and the unusual guest of her grandmother. Her mother was the first to speak. "Hurry and sit down. While you were sleeping the day away, your breakfast was getting cold." she said in an annoyed tone. "Yes that is true but Venus don't pressure her" said grandmother. "Tonight is a night for celebration!" I looked up at my grandmother in excitement. "What are we celebrating?" I asked because as gods there is always an excuse or another to throw a party but grandmother usually did not partake. She preferred the scenery and sounds of tartarus. "My little Nyx has come of age in this last year and it has been a full year since you started training. So after a quick lesson you my dear will be going out alone to complete your duties." she said with a small smile. "I have full faith that you will not let me down." I looked at her with a wide smile trying to hide my horror internally because I did not feel ready.

To my delight, grandmother informed me that I was only checking the sky, stars, and moon tonight on my own. Our duties usually consist of making sure that we bring night to the mortals who worship us, so they can rest and prepare for the day. She told me that I had to make sure the constellations were in the correct positions, the moon in its correct phase, and the weather clouds appropriate for this time of year. Uncle Zeus loved playing weather pranks on me, so I had to stay vigilant. Unless I wanted to face her wrath. Grandmother Nyx did get angry often but when she did it never ended well for those on the other side. I was very happy when I got through my duties without any mistakes or things going wrong. As I was finishing my final checks on the moon, creating just the right wax shape it was to be. I noticed something out of the ordinary. A small tear appeared next to the moon. It was as if someone took a knife and sliced the sky like they would do a roast at a feast. I glided my way to the tear it started to open bit by bit. I would have to call grandmother for this problem as I'm not yet in control of that power. As I peer into the void being opened by this tear I see an unfamiliar landscape I have never encountered in all my days. I see lights not made up of fires or magic like Helios. Strange carriages making sounds like loud ducks or geese. A completely new cosmos with a different night sky as well. How I long to jump into this void to discover all new things but I could not leave this tear for who knows the trouble it could bring to my family or the mortals who we rule."Yes, I must call my grandmother to fix the space." I said aloud to further convince myself to step away. I'm no longer a child, I'm an adult who has come of age. I can not jump head first into curiosity. As I stood there debating on if I would indeed jump through this portal through space , my grandmother who at some point felt the disturbance, appeared. "So my grandchild, what is it that has intruded on our realm?" She spoke with a heavy, dangerous aura. "It appears to be a world different from our own. From the people to the buildings and carriages, they even have a different sky, constellations, and moon placement." "I see" she said. "Well the have yet to discover it and I sense no hostility. Let us close it and be done with this. " I stood there watching her speak about closing the door to this magical new land with not much more thought than snuffing out light. I wanted to surge forward and scream that we should explore! Meet these mortals who have invented the wondrous things that the likes of the beings in this realm have never seen. But I said nothing because as soon as I scrounge up the courage it was gone. The unique door was now forever closed. My grandmother praised me for doing an excellent job on my work aside from the anomaly. Any other day this would have been all I wished for but today was not the same old day.
