Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

Late into the night a man is rushing on his bike towards a building in the dark, the man sighs as he enters the garage of his apartment complex just as it started raining. He looks at the rain begins to get worse, he used to enjoy standing in the rain but tonight, this rain gave him a strange feeling. Looking down at his wet clothes he stores his bike before rushing to his apartment, feeling as if he needed a shower. Walking inside, he notices that the lights are off, which meant that his roommate was out at the night club again. Even though the guy makes more than him, he is always short on money because he spends his money on luxury goods just so he can impress women. Shaking his head at the way his roommate never took anything seriously while he had to work his hands raw just so he could live like a human. Then he continued to his room grabbed a towel before jumping into the shower, washing himself from top to bottom. After he was done, he dumped the wet clothes into a corner of the room since they gave him a bad feeling, before falling into bed.

The next morning, he was woken up by a scream, causing him to jolt up. He tried to wipe the weariness from his face, hearing another scream the man got out of bed and walked to his door. Opening it just a crack he looked out and saw his roommate banging on the bathroom while growling. Seeing his roommate going all out on the door made him wish he had a bat for safety, when he felt something in his hand. Glancing down he noticed a police baton in his hand, as he was looking at it with a confused gaze when he heard another scream from the bathroom when his roommate punched a hole into the door, catching his attention. Now that he could see inside his roommate went berserk, noticing him being distracted, he decided to take the opportunity to sneak up on him. Opening his door, he slowly walked up behind his roommate as he raised the baton in his hand. When he was close enough, he brought it down hard hoping to knock out his roommate. Unfortunately, it just caused him to stumble to the ground. Once his roommate noticed him, he lunged towards him as if nothing happened, jumping out of the way, he swung again, but this time to the back of his head. He heard a crack come from his roommate's head before he fell to the ground not moving.

When he didn't get back up the guy went to the bathroom door and looked thru the hole to see a naked woman huddled in the corner. "It's safe now, I think I knocked him out good," the guy said to the woman before turning to look back at his roommate. He then walked up to his roommate and nudged him with his foot. He then noticed that there were bloody holes in his roommate's body, sending shivers down his spine, when nothing happened, he flipped his roommate over with his foot. When he saw his roommate's half melted face, he couldn't help but feel sick to his stomach, he also noticed that his roommate's eyes were wide open, but he was not moving. Worried, the guy squatted down and tried looking for a pulse, he sighed when he didn't find one. That was when he heard the woman come out of the bathroom and stand behind him. "What happened? How did he get like this?" the guy asked the woman. "I don't know, when I woke up, he was already standing in front of the window looking like this. I screamed when I saw the blood. That was when he jumped at me, but I was able to move out of the way and run to the bathroom," the woman explained. Confused the guy asked, "Can you tell me what happened last night before you went to sleep?" "Everything was pretty normal thru the night with drinking and dancing. It was raining when I went to leave, so I decided to hook up with this guy for the night since he had a car. This guy teased me all the way here, but when we finally got to it, he passed out not two minutes later," the girl explained.

The guy nodded his head, he was used to his roommate bringing women back from the club, and then hearing them ridicule him before leaving in anger. There were even a few times that they sought him out when his roommate couldn't perform. It was joke between them, his roommate would say he is sharing his leftovers with him, while he would joke back that with his performance, it can only be called foreplay. "Did anything else happen? Did you do something?" he asked again while staring into his roommate's vacant eyes. "Since it was still raining and minute man here was asleep, I decided to stay here for the night and took take a shower before going to sleep, that was all," she said. Thinking about how the rain felt strange to him last night he looked up and thru the glass doors leading to the balcony to see that it was still raining. I then looked at the woman, noticing her long black hair and curvy figure, but her face was barely above a five, if she had make-up on, she'd be a six. "Name's Fade," I say nodding to her. "Stephanie, do you think we should call somebody about what happened?" she asked point at Fade's roommate. "Guess so," Fade say's before standing up and going to his room to get his cell phone. He noticed Stephanie following behind before she jumped under the covers of his bed. He looked at her with a questioning look when she did this. Shrugging his shoulders, he picked up his phone and called 1-1-0.

Hanging up he said to Stephanie, "No luck, no one picked up, there was just a message saying to stay indoors away from the rain. Do you want me to drive you home?" Stephanie shook her head before saying, "My apartment doesn't have a garage, I would get soaked before I made it inside." Shrugging my shoulders I went to my roommate's room and grabbed his covers, throwing it over him. I than went to the kitchen and started to cook some food. Afterwards he brought it to his room, not wanting to eat next to a dead body, he stood frozen at the door as he looked at Stephanie, he saw that Stephanie had put on a t-shirt from his closet. Given he was six feet with a bulk body, the shirt was hanging off one shoulder and barely long enough to cover her nether region, so, even though her looks were average, the aura she put out while wearing his clothes stirred a desire within him, causing him to now know why men were always trying to get themselves a woman. "I hope you don't mind; I don't want to wear my rain drenched clothes," Stephanie said a bit shyly. He swallows his saliva before saying, "No problem at all, I made breakfast if you're hungry."

He brought a plate to Stephanie as she sat on the bed. "Thank you, I'm starving," she said while taking the plate with stars in her eyes. He watches her as she eats before sitting down next to her and eating his food. Once they were done Stephanie cuddled into his arms, but Fade didn't say anything because he could feel her shivering. She was probably still in shock from what happened, so he let her do what she wanted, while he pulled out his phone to look up the news. He found out that the rain was dangerous, as it acted like acid melting people that are exposed to it for a long time, and those that don't not wash it off will become violent. They urged people to stay indoors away from the rain, but to wash it off as quickly as possible if they were exposed. "If I hadn't showered last night I would have become like him," Stephanie said before burrowing her head in Fade's shoulder. Fade patted her head, hoping to bring her at least a little comfort, while he thought about what to do in their situation. They did not have a lot of food and would need to go out in order to get more. His roommate never cooked, while fade didn't not stock food since he thought it was a waste of money and would only buy ingredients for the next day on the way home. If they stretched it out, it might last them a week, but he was hoping the rain would stop before they ran out of food.

After a while Stephanie was able to calm down when her phone rang, so she started talking to her friends before calling her family to see if they were ok. Fade's parents died when he was a child, so his last living relative, his grandfather took him in, but he died when Fade was sixteen, and threw out his thirty years as an introvert he never had one he could call a friend, so he had no one to contact when shit hit the fan. So instead, he began to wonder about the appearance of the baton. Looking at it while he opened and closed it. He thought about how it just appeared in his hand. Getting an idea, he thought about wanting a gun, just to see one appear in his hand as he became a little dizzy, surprised, he stared at it for a while before ejecting the magazine to find it empty. Apparently, he did not need to know how something worked to materialize it, but only what he wanted would appear. He then thought about wanting an apple when a stronger wave of dizziness hit him, and when he looked into his hand all he had was a seed. "It seems that I am not strong enough yet to make a lot, at least I do not need to know how things are made in order to summon them, I just don't know whether they are permanent yet," Fade thought to himself. Fade slipped the gun into the side drawer before Stephanie could notice it along with the apple seed.

After a while, Stephanie finished talking on her phone before cuddling up with Fade again. "My parents are fine right now, they said I should just stay here for now, but I haven't been able to reach the friends I went out with last night," Stephanie said with a sad look on her face while thinking about what may have happened to them. "I agree with your parents, the rain is not the only dangerous thing right now. What if you come across someone that had crazy?" Fade says, trying to comfort her, "I am sure your friends are fine, maybe they are just busy right now." With nothing to do they laid there, in each other's arms before falling asleep. It was night-time when Fade woke up, he found an arm wrapped around him, he looked over to see Stephanie still sleeping. He carefully removed her arm before slipping out of the bed to get something to drink, when he reached the living room, a flash of light from outside caught his attention. Walking up to the glass doors, he noticed that the rain had stopped so he opened the door just to hear a scream coming from the streets below, and he saw a car speeding along before crashing into a gas station before exploding. A short while later Stephanie came out of the room, seeing Fade, she went up to him and asked, "What's happening? What was that sound?" "The apocalypse," was all Fade said as he watched the city tare it's self apart. Seeing what was happening, Stephanie began to shiver again so she buried herself in Fade's arms again.

Looking down at Stephanie, Fade thought to himself, "This girl is too clingy, she has a need to feel safe. The apocalypse kills people like this if they are unable to adept, even I wouldn't waste my time on her if I didn't get this ability. The apocalypse is a dog-eat-dog world where you cannot let sentimentality and morality hold you back, or else the next person to die will be you." Fade imagines a box bullets for the gun before single bullet materializes. If he wanted to stay alive in this new world, he had to figure out his ability, and quickly. Stephanie went to the bathroom when they went back inside, while Fade laid back down onto his bed thinking. "From what I determined so far, with my current strength I cannot materialize something too big, I can only summon one thing at a time, I do not need knowledge on how something works, and depending on how much strength I have will determine what gets summoned, like when I wanted an apple but apparently only had enough strength to summon an apple seed. I have a feeling that if I try to summon something I do not have the strength for, I might just be sucked dry in the attempt, too risky to try." He tried to think about anything that could give him an edge in this world. He chuckled to himself when he thought about having a blade made from the metal adamantium from the movies. At that moment he got so dizzy he collapsed into the bed while something materialized into his hand. He waited a while before checking out the silver blade in his hand with a look of doubt on his face. Looking at his bedside table, he stabbed down on it with the knife, just to see it sink to the hilt. Surprised, Fade sat where he was, frozen, until Stephanie came out of the bathroom and climbed into the bed.
