Lyra's POV
I froze.
Footsteps stomped on the wooden tiles. Heavy. Unmistakably close. Headed straight for the bedroom.
My stomach dropped.
I stepped back from the bedroom door, pulse pounding in my ears. Each step outside sounded heavier than the last, like someone—or something—built like stone was drawing closer. The floor creaked beneath me as I looked around, desperate.
Then they stopped for a while. I sighed a relief when I heard muffled voices from the distance–A small talk but good enough for me to use that precious time!
I had seconds. Maybe less.
Panic flared hot in my chest.
Where do I hide?
Under the bed? Too exposed.
Behind the curtains? Too thin.
My eyes landed on the wardrobe in the corner, one door slightly open like it was waiting for me.
The door knob turned.
