Ember's POV
The truck bumped hard over another hole in the road. My teeth bit down on my tongue, and I tasted blood. Behind us, those three sets of headlights were getting bigger and brighter.
"They're getting closer," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.
Ash's hands gripped the steering wheel so tight that I could see his knuckles turning white. "I know."
The first truck was maybe fifty feet behind us now. I could see the driver's face in our mirror. He looked angry. Really angry.
"Ash, there's something I need to tell you," I said quickly.
"What?"
"My grandmother used to take me on these mountains when I was little. There's a secret road up ahead. It's dangerous, but if we can make it..."
"Where?"
I looked out the window, trying to remember. Everything looked different in the dark with snow falling. "There should be a big rock that looks like a bear. After that, there's a tiny dirt path that goes up the mountain."
"How tiny?"
"Really tiny. Like, cars can barely fit."
