Chapter 38 - 38- Apologies

Vera slammed the bedroom door, her mascara streaked tears already staining the soft pillowcase as she collapsed on the bed. The unfiltered words of Thompson's mother echoed in her mind, each syllable felt like dagger in her heart.

"Spoiled. Obnoxious. No one wants you."

She buried her face deeper into the pillow, muffling her sobs. "Where is Thompson? Why hasn't he followed me? Why didn't he defend me?" She thought and subbed even louder.

Minutes went by, each one fueling her anger. She sat up, with clenched fists. "How dare he abandon me like this?" She muttered in between her tear.

The door creaked open and Thompson stepped in, his face neutral with an underlying emotion Vera's wasn't ready to deal with.

"Where were you?" She demanded, her voice raw and low.

No response.

"I said, where were you?!" She stood, closing the distance between them in two strides.

SLAP!
