Chapter start

After a long discussion about the serialization of Slam Dunk, Lucien D. Blackthorn's two-hour period of clarity began to fade. The sharp ache within him surged anew, and he started coughing violently, his entire body trembling under the weight of the pain.

Seeing Lucien in such distress, Eriri Spencer Sawamura's expression darkened with concern. Without hesitation, she quickly placed the oxygen mask over his face.

Lucien took a few deep breaths and then said weakly, "Sorry, Sawamura... I need to rest."

"You should. Please get some sleep," she replied softly.

She remained by his side, watching as his breathing gradually calmed and his pale eyelids slid shut. Only then did she quietly stand and step out of the ward.

After briefly exchanging words with Lucien's attending doctor, Eriri left the hospital and headed home, her heart still heavy with the image of his weakened state.

That evening, once she returned to her room, Eriri—under her professional pen name Eri Kashiwagi—logged into Lucien's social media account and prepared to post the first three chapters of Slam Dunk. Lucien had previously built up over a thousand followers under his author pseudonym, Whale, so there was already a solid audience eagerly awaiting his next creation.

Eriri refrained from using her own artist account to promote it, choosing instead to quietly like the post to avoid drawing unnecessary attention. She trusted the content would speak for itself.

Soon after the chapters went live, the comments section began to flood with reactions:

[User A]: "Slam Dunk? A new series from Whale-sensei? Wait, what about Volume 2 of Attack on Titan?!"

[User B]: "Why start a new series?! Please don't abandon Attack on Titan!"

[User C]: "Wait, is this a school-life manga? With basketball? This is nothing like Whale-sensei's usual dark, dramatic tone."

[User D]: "I kinda love it. Haruko is adorable and Rukawa's cool. But is Sakuragi seriously the main character?"

[User E]: "Sakuragi's on the cover, so yeah. But he's so dense... and violent! LOL."

[User F]: "I actually like that about him. He's way more fun than your usual 'cool guy' protagonist."

[User G]: "Please tell me Volume 2 of Attack on Titan is still happening. I'm desperate!"

Reading the barrage of comments, Eriri felt oddly proud. Though the praise was directed at Lucien, the energy of the community and their enthusiasm warmed her. She quickly posted a follow-up tweet:

[Whale]: "To everyone asking—yes! Attack on Titan Volume 2 is in planning. Volume 1 will be serialized in Manga Jump. Due to licensing agreements, online content will be restricted to the first 20 pages starting tomorrow. Please understand!"

That announcement only brought a new wave of buzz:

[User A]: "Manga Jump serialization?! Amazing! I'll definitely buy a copy!"

[User B]: "Whale-sensei really made it! A genius finally getting recognition."

[User C]: "So the rumors about fake voting in the other magazine were true after all... Manga Jump is winning hard!"

[User D]: "Let's just hope Weekly Shonen Magazine doesn't start sabotaging Whale-sensei now..."

[User E]: "Volume 2 of Attack on Titan can't come fast enough!"

Eriri smiled as she closed the browser window. She could hear the praise, feel the energy of the fans, and a sense of joy bubbled up inside her. It almost felt as though they were praising her too.

Feeling a sudden burst of inspiration, she leapt from her chair and walked straight to her art desk.

"Maybe I'll draw a serious fan art of Rukawa Kaede…" she mumbled to herself.

It wasn't going to be the kind of work she usually posted under her Kashiwagi alias—no suggestive poses or fantasy armor, just a clean, expressive portrait.

With a few dozen swift, confident strokes, she laid the structure of the piece. Gradually, she refined the shading, expression, and posture. Line by line, the character came to life. Sharp yet serene, composed yet brimming with quiet determination.

An hour passed.

When she finally set down her brush and looked at the finished piece, a strange feeling took over her.

"This… doesn't look like Rukawa at all."

She stared.

"It looks like… Lucien."

It wasn't intentional. But in her mind, while thinking of Rukawa's aloof demeanor, his steady hands and piercing eyes, the image that kept surfacing was that of Lucien D. Blackthorn. Somehow, her subconscious had swapped one for the other.

She sighed, shoulders sagging.

"Well, Lucien is kind of cool too…" she whispered with a tiny smile.

A strange scene formed in her imagination—Lucien in a basketball uniform, hair tousled, sweat glistening, the crowd cheering as he sank a three-pointer. It was a silly thought. But the idea made her heart skip.

She carefully peeled the drawing from the board and mounted it.

"I'm keeping this," she muttered, eyes softening.

And so, another memory was sealed—drawn in pencil, bound in silence, and cherished in secret.
