Weekly Shonen Magazine Editorial Department — Tokyo, Japan

Inside the editor-in-chief's office, Ryunosuke Kyuki sat behind his desk, brows furrowed as he stared at the glowing computer screen. The news hit him harder than he expected: Attack on Titan was going to be serialized in Manga Jump.

His hand clenched around the ceramic teacup, fingers twitching.

"I shouldn't have acted so hastily..." he muttered, eyes narrowing.

But it wasn't regret for burying a masterpiece. No, it was regret for publicly mishandling the situation, for giving orders that led to a tweet directly calling out Whale—the pen name of the mysterious but brilliant young author, Lucien D. Blackthorn.

He exhaled sharply. "That idiot Funao must be laughing now..."

Kyuki's pride wouldn't let him admit defeat. "Whale? A genius? Bah. Just a flash in the pan."

Closing the tab, he picked up his phone and dialed. "Koishikawa, that author of yours, Kimura Kento... isn't he good with fantasy and horror themes? I have a proposal."

His plan? Create a rival manga mimicking Attack on Titan, push it aggressively with Weekly Shonen Magazine's marketing muscle, and outshine Whale through brute force and strategy. It was a bold, vengeful counterattack against Manga Jump and Funao Yuto.

Elsewhere in Tokyo — Evening

Iida Ayano, manga editor for Manga Jump, had just ended a video call with one of her authors, Mashiro Shiina. With a mug of tea in hand, she browsed social media and paused when a notification caught her eye.

"Whale released something new?"

Curious, she clicked into Lucien D. Blackthorn's official account. The tweets detailed the debut of a new manga—SLAM DUNK. Her eyebrows lifted.

"Isn't Lucien still recovering from cancer? And yet he's publishing new work..."

She leaned back in her chair, thinking. Even if he wants to keep creating, shouldn't he focus on volume two of Attack on Titan first?

Still, she admired his tenacity.

"I should visit him at the hospital. This kind of passion deserves guidance."

Lucien might be a genius, but he was still a newcomer in the industry. He needed nurturing, strategy, and support.

Hospital Room - Evening

Three days had passed, and every evening after school, Eriri Spencer Sawamura had faithfully visited Lucien in the hospital.

She'd review his manga drafts, offer critiques, and talk about school. The atmosphere between them had grown increasingly warm, the earlier awkwardness now gone.

"Lucien, guess what happened at school today? Someone confessed to Senior Kasumigaoka! Publicly! Everyone was buzzing about it."

Lucien chuckled weakly from his bed. "Really? Who's the brave soul?"

"A third-year from the baseball team. You wouldn't know him."

"So, did she accept?"

Eriri snorted. "Of course not. You think anyone can just waltz up to Utaha-senpai and win her heart? She's practically a goddess."

Lucien smirked. "But you're also pretty popular, right? Bet you've had your fair share of confessions."

Eriri flushed. "Me? No way. That's just teasing from classmates. Utaha-senpai is the real deal. Top grades, flawless looks, and... ugh, that figure. She's basically perfect."

Though Eriri and Utaha had never spoken directly, their reputations preceded them. Without Aki Tomoya in this timeline to bring them together, their paths had yet to cross.

Eriri sighed, hugging her sketchbook to her chest.

Even if I'm known as one of the school beauties, I can't compare to someone like her...

Her grades were average. Her bust, modest. And she had a secret identity as a doujinshi artist, drawing risqué fanworks under her pen name, Eri Kashiwagi. That was not something she could ever reveal proudly.

"Sometimes," she said softly, "I wonder if I'm even cut out for this normal high school girl thing. I'm just a weird otaku who draws things that would get me in trouble if anyone saw."

Lucien looked at her with calm, reassuring eyes. "Eriri... everyone has something that makes them feel out of place. But that doesn't make you any less amazing."

She turned away, pretending to fix her hair, but her cheeks were flushed pink.

"Dummy," she muttered.
