Chapter 1 - A new me

"A new life, a new me"

Mirae stares at the ceiling as she mutters to herself. A ceiling she barely recognises, a ceiling that doesn't have her mark on it.

"This stuff only sounds cool when those movie characters say it"

She watches the ceiling fan whirring, soft noises emitted from it. She gets up, half an hour before she is supposed to. The nerves really do get working before something new happens. The human body truly is wonderful.

Mirae's parents were firmly under the impression that her wanting to transfer schools simply because her dog passed away was a tad bit overkill. They couldn't have stressed upon it enough with their words.

"You cannot have a fresh start every time something tragic happens you know?" Her mom started over the dinner table, a month back.

"You have to man up in these situations. If we were financially unstable you would've slipped into depression with the way you've been acting"

Her dad looks at his phone, it was rare that he ever said anything to both of them now and Mirae noticed.

"I see him everywhere I go Mum. You wouldn't get it. Roxy is everywhere I go. It bothers me. I can't get it out of my head"

Mirae speaks all at once, as if she missed a beat her voice would disappear, her words would lose meaning.

"We are giving this to you under the condition that you study what we want you to study"

She looks at her father, wishing he would support her only to realise he probably doesn't even know what they're talking about.

"You're studying computer science and that's final. You won't utter another word about this."

The finality in her mothers words scared Mirae.

Yumi dug into her food finally, having ended the conversation for good.

And here she is, a month later. A new home, a new school, a different neighbourhood.

She stands in front of her cupboard for a while, then in front of the mirror and lastly at the bottom of the stairs, her head seemed to be a jumble of emotions and at the same time, had nothing going on at all.

"What are you contemplating for so long?"

Her mothers voice broke her out of her trance.

"Trying to feel new", she smiles.

"I think you'll feel new after some breakfast"

Having filled up her stomach to the brim in an attempt to calm her nerves, she was out. The cold air hitting her face almost immediately.

"Riverstone Academy" she reads out from her ID card.

"Sounds fancy" she laughs to herself.

She stands in front of what looked like an apartment complex for celebrities, a while later.

Entering the school premises, she already felt like a new person. Suddenly, she was quite grateful her parents were financially stable and had secure jobs for she wouldn't have known how to cope without a school like this now that she had seen it.

"Classroom 27, class 11th"

She knocks at the door taking a deep breath.

Her teacher's voice echoed on the other end, calling out for her to come in.

Her eyes widen as soon as she enters, realising how big a mistake she had been making all this while.
