Chapter 1 - Young Love

In the year three hundred B.C there was once a large planet far away from the planet earth. This planet was known as Nox. This planet had an atmosphere so thick the light from nearby stars couldn't break through. The planet grew bioluminescent mushrooms as a result of this. These mushrooms provided light and energy for the residents of this planet. Speaking of which, due to the lack of sunlight, the humanoid species that lived there developed incredibly pale skin and crimson eyes that would burn at the slightest glimpse of sunlight. They were also primarily a carnivorous species and had extremely sharp and prominent canine teeth used to tear apart their prey and drain them of their blood. This species later became known as vampires. The vampires had developed a powerful oligarchy system that united the entire planet under the rule of a select handful of individuals. One of which was Senator Randal Chaos, who was getting his son Victor ready to take his place.

Victor had woken up from his slumber. He rubbed his eyes as he pulled himself out of bed. His room was large with a red queen sized bed pushed up against the wall. The black carpets were steamed almost daily to keep their fresh scent and soft feel. The wooden desk sat to the left of the bed and contained most of Victor's hygiene products. The room had been lit up with a red mushroom that hung from the ceiling. The room was so spacious even Victor questioned if a child deserved all this. He brushed his white hair back behind his ears and put on his school uniform. The uniform was primarily black with a sky blue vest over the front and bow tie. Victor loathed wearing it because the entire outfit was incredibly tight and itchy. He stepped out of his room wearing his black dress shoes and walked down the hall toward the learning commons. Nobility had a special education system located inside the castle where they all lived.

The hallway was lined with black carpet and the walls were cut from a dark grey stone. Several other well dressed children with white hair walked through the mushroom lit hallway. They didn't seem to be nearly as annoyed by the bright yellow light from the mushrooms as Victor was. He tended to ignore the chatter of his peers. Seeing it as nothing more than a mildly annoying background noise that he could mostly tune out. However today he saw something that grabbed his attention. There was a girl no older than he was in a maid uniform picking up the discarded trash the nobles just threw on the ground. The uniform was incredibly dirty. Its white apron was stained with various shades of brown and the black dress had holes in multiple spots. The girl had long black hair that went down past her shoulders. Her eyes were also a deep violet color. Far different from the bright red of the other vampires.

She was being scolded by one of Victor's classmates. He had curly hair and was a few inches taller than Victor. "Listen here! You don't dare get in my way again! I don't want you to get any of your filth on me," He said.

"But I wasn't…" she began to say before he shoved her to the ground. He let out a quick chuckle as Victor placed his hand on the kid's shoulder. " Oh shit! Hey victor lis-listen, I was just tel-telling her to pick up her gar-garb-garbage. I wasn't trying to be mean," He stuttered as panic set in. Victor's grip tightened as his nails sunk into the boy's shoulder. Victor's pupils became long and narrow. Resembling that of a cat.

"Did you apologize to her?" Victor asked in a stern tone.

"What? Of course not. These are maids. They just do whatever we say. It's not like we are going to get in trouble for it," He said before Victor threw him over his shoulder and into the wall. His face hit the wall so hard it left a small crater and created a rumble that could be felt throughout the entire building. The boy fell onto the floor back first with blood running down his face. Half of his front teeth lodged in the wall. Victor placed his foot onto the boy's chest and asked "Now Bartholomew, what do you say?".

"I'm sorry," He said, coughing more blood and teeth. Victor knelt down beside the girl and started picking some of the garbage on the floor.

"Sorry about that. I will help you pick up my mess," Victor said, kneeling down and grabbing one of the rags she dropped.

"Um, is he okay?" the girl asked.

"Of course he is. We can heal based on the amount of blood we drink. I would have thought you would know that".

"I mean I have healed a few scrapes and bruises before but I have never seen someone get that hurt before,".

"After a while you get used to it," Victor said. The girl looked up at him with an expression of both confusion and concern. Victor looked at her and without missing a beat said "Your eyes are pretty by the way".

"Oh um thank you," She said as she blushed slightly.

"You're welcome. Also sorry you have to put up with those jerks all the time,".

"Oh it's not a big deal. Thank you for helping me though. Also shouldn't you be getting to class?".

"I didn't really want to go in the first place. Though fancy pants assholes drive me crazy. I am better off helping you,".

"Hehehe, you're really sweet. What's your name though?"

"It's Victor,".

"I'm Wendy and I have really liked spending time with you,"

"Are you serious? You were shoved to the ground and are now cleaning up blood splatter,".

"Yes but that happens everyday. However, I have never done it with someone else before. Sure there are other chambermaids but we all mostly work on our own. We rarely ever help each other, and I would never think in a million years that a noble would offer to help me, but you did. Thank you,".

"Please don't compare me to them. I can't stand those bastards,".

"Oh I'm sorry,".

"You're fine. Say now that we are finished cleaning, do you want to see something cool? I didn't plan on going to class anyway,".

"Um sure," Wendy said with a hesitant smile.

"Okay great!" Victor said excitedly, grabbing her hand and running away with her outside to the courtyard. The dim light made it hard to see the marble statues of people and animals. Wendy had never been in the courtyard before and was taken aback by the smell of the nightshade flower that lined the stone walkway. At the end of the path was a dull gray boulder that was over ten feet tall. "Hey Wendy, have you ever seen a dragon before?".

"Don't be silly Victor. Dragons aren't real," She said, chuckling a bit at him. Victor smirked and patted the side of the rock. The rock turned from grey to vibrant green . The rock uncurled itself and revealed that it was a dragon with three long toes on each foot that more resembled fingers than the ones seen on other animals. It unveiled the large wings it had sheathed at its sides and swung its long spined tail back. Its eyes were yellow, small, and split apart by a large head crest. Wendy looked at it in shock and awe as her jaw hung open.

"Wendy, this is my pet Gale," Victor said with his arms spread out. Wendy just stood there speechless still flabbergasted that these beasts existed. Not to mention the fact that people could have them as pets. "Do you want to ride her Wendy?" Victor asked with a grin. Her eyes shot directly toward Victor and she began to smile ear to ear. She shook her head yes and squealed as she could barely contain her excitement. The two kids got on Gale's shoulders. Victor grabbed her head crest and Wendy sat behind him and wrapped her hands around his waist. Gale's wings flapped, kicking up dust and plant life. They finally got airborne and began to soar around the castle ground. The building was the size of a small town and was so tall it could be seen for miles. The majesty of the bioluminescence and grandiosity of the black spires on top of the castle made Wendy's eyes light up with joy.

"I still can't believe you have one of these as a pet!" Wendy said.

"Most noble children get one for our two hundredth birthday,".

"Man, you are so lucky. I have always wanted a big family and a pet,". Gale landed after about an hour and let the kids off back in the courtyard. "Victor, thank you so much! I have never had more fun in my life!" Wendy said before stepping back into the castle. She rounded the corner and walked down the stairs to the maid quarters. The entire place was built from decrepit and cracked cobblestone. The floorboards were rotting and were riddled with splitters. The place had a stench that was a mixture of dirty bath water and dead house plants. There was a woman who sat in the middle of the floor and was folding laundry. She appeared older with a blue bandanna that obscured greying hair, callused skin, and bags under her red eyes. She looked at Wendy with a tired smile and said "Oh hi dear. How was your day?".

"It was so good mom! I made a friend today!".
