Chapter 25: The Musical Re-education Disaster. Part 3: The Teaching Disasters Begin
—
Previously:
Raiko began his crash course in "What Metal Actually Is," explaining that it's loud, aggressive, and overwhelming — not soothing background music for royal banquets.
One power chord demonstration later, the court musicians were left shaken, confused, and mildly terrified, while Raiko declared it was time to rebuild their musical instincts from the ground up.
—
**PERCIVAL'S POWER CHORD TRAUMA:**
—
"Percival," Raiko said patiently, "I need you to play a power chord."
"Just two notes."
"Simple."
"Certainly!" Percival positioned his fingers with the precision of a surgeon.
"Like this?"
He strummed gently, producing a sound like a lullaby being played through a broken music box.
"No. HARDER."
Percival strummed slightly less gently.
"HARDER."
A marginally more forceful strum.
"ATTACK THE STRINGS!" Raiko bellowed.
"Like they stole your lunch money!"
"Like they insulted your mother!"
"Like they said lute music was better than guitar music!"
"But lute music IS better than—"
"THAT'S THE SPIRIT! Channel that indignation! NOW HIT THE CHORD!"
Percival, fired up by the imagined slight against his beloved lute, finally struck the strings with something approaching conviction.
The result was... adequate.
"Better!" Raiko said encouragingly.
"Only ninety-seven more lessons to go!"
Percival whimpered.
—
**MELODY'S BASS BREAKDOWN:**
—
"Melody," Raiko turned to the harpist-turned-bassist, "bass in metal isn't about delicate arpeggios."
"It's about providing the FOUNDATION."
"The rumbling earthquake beneath the melody."
"Like... like thunder?" Melody asked hopefully.
"YES! Exactly like thunder!"
"But gentle thunder? Like a spring rain—"
"NO! Like the thunder that splits trees and terrifies livestock!"
Melody looked horrified. "I... I don't think I can terrify livestock with music."
"It seems mean."
"The livestock will LOVE it! They'll headbang along!"
"Livestock can headbang?"
"...We'll work on it."
—
**WINSLOW'S RHYTHM REVELATION:**
—
"Winslow," Raiko said, approaching the drummer with the caution of someone approaching a very confused bear, "metal drumming is not about keeping time for waltzes."
"But everything should be in proper time!" Reginald protested.
"How else will people know when to dance?"
"They're not supposed to dance! They're supposed to... to move like their souls are possessed by the rhythm!"
"Possessed? That sounds dangerous!"
"It's CONTROLLED possession! Rhythmic possession!"
"Is that legal?"
"...Just play faster than a waltz, please."
—
**LADY CORDELIA'S KEYBOARD CRISIS:**
—
"Lady Cordelia," Raiko said, saving the most challenging for last, "keyboards in metal aren't for making pretty wedding music."
"But keyboards are MADE for pretty music!" she protested.
"What else would you use them for?"
"ATMOSPHERE."
"DARKNESS."
"THE SOUND OF ANCIENT CASTLES AND FORGOTTEN MAGIC."
"That sounds rather gothic and depressing."
"EXACTLY!"
"But I don't LIKE gothic and depressing! I prefer uplifting and inspiring!"
"Learn to like gothic! Embrace the darkness!"
"I... I don't think I can embrace darkness. I have a very sunny disposition."
Raiko stared at her bright, cheerful face and realized he was trying to teach sunshine to be a storm cloud.
This was going to take longer than he'd hoped.

TO BE CONTINUED
—
Author's Note:
We've officially entered the "teaching a cat to swim" phase of Raiko's re-education plan.
Percival is still emotionally recovering from the idea that lute music might not be supreme.
Melody is worried about livestock welfare
Winslow thinks rhythmic possession is a legal grey area,
and Lady Cordelia refuses to embrace darkness because she's basically human sunshine.
At this rate, the band's first concert will be in about seventeen years.
