Chapter 19: Death! (Part 5)
This was risky.
And if there were any other way, he didn't want to feed the spirit beasts. It was too dangerous. If he wasn't careful, the fake would become real, and he'd die in the mouth of a wind sickle beast.
But he couldn't do anything. Once night fell, his advantage would be completely gone. He was in the water, and at night, he was blind, unable to see anything.
Furthermore, his wound was still bleeding, and he hadn't had a chance to bandage it while soaking in the lake. If the wound caught a high fever, tetanus, or anything else, without his physical advantage, he would die quickly.
Think about it again.
After a moment's hesitation, Uchiha Uranium still didn't make a decision. He wanted to find another way out. What if the two spirit beasts retreated on their own because they couldn't feed him?
The sun set, leaving only a last ray of light.
Barring any unexpected events, it would be gone in ten minutes at most.
Suddenly, the boy felt a tightness in his heart. If he didn't make a decision now, once the light completely disappeared, it would be too late!
Uchiha Uran gritted his teeth and risked surfacing. He quickly glanced around and was overjoyed to find one less soul beast. The smaller spirit beast remained, the male seemingly off hunting. The female Wind Scythe's gaze wasn't as brutal as the male's, but only in relative terms.
To Uchiha Uran, the danger posed by the two wasn't much different. Having one less to deal with gave him more room to maneuver. He'd made up his mind.
He was going ashore.
Uchiha Uran's gaze narrowed slightly, taking a deep breath. Seeing that the Wind Scythe had stopped spitting wind blades at him, seemingly because it was ineffective, he suddenly plunged back into the water, his legs swiftly moving in the opposite direction of the spirit beast.
He had planned his course in just ten seconds: reaching shore, setting a trap, and then, with the rapidly approaching Wind Scythe, his opponent, after taking personal injury, rushing directly to the trap. Using the exploding trap to deter the pursuing spirit beast, he would then fall into the water and escape safely.
Land was definitely the most dangerous option. The Wind Scythe beast moved swiftly, and he wouldn't have far to run before being caught. This wasn't a cavernous environment where he could make his move.
This was the Great Star Dou Forest.
Soon, a figure emerged from the water opposite the Wind Scythe beast. The next moment, Uchiha Uranium felt a chilling gaze fixed on him. He knew he only had seconds to set a trap; the Wind Scythe beast wouldn't have long to circumvent the lake!
With no time to find a suitable trap spot, Uchiha Uranium simply placed one in front of him, and two more miniature traps materialized between his hands.
The dimming forest air rustled with the sound of wind. After setting three traps, the anticipated attack arrived.
"Roar!"
A roar echoed through the forest, startling the young man to the point of goosebumps.
A gust of wind, reeking of blood, blew against the young man, leaping high and striking him from behind.
Uchiha Uran's hair stood on end, the single magatama-shaped radiating eye in his pupil swirling rapidly. Although he couldn't see the lightning-fast figure behind him, he could already sense it intuitively. It was very close! Very close!
He couldn't take it head-on, or he would die. Dodge! Quickly!
The intuition of danger told Uchiha Uran that even as his brain was still trying to decide which way to roll, his body reacted instantly. He stomped his feet and used all his strength to roll forward.
The force was so great that Uchiha Uran felt the wound on his shoulder blade split open again, and a little blood spurted out and remained where it was.
Bang!
The dirt flew everywhere, and a yellow and black soul beast faltered in its place. A large crater appeared in its place, a result unlike any ordinary blow.
It was a skill.
Without even a moment to feel the pain, he immediately stood up and pulled out a sharp weapon from his soul guide: the ribs of a soul beast he had encountered before. He gripped the sharp bone spear tightly and stared straight ahead, staring intently at the wind sickle beast that was attacking him.
In the dim light, Uchiha Uran could see the soul beast's eyes gleaming like will-o'-the-night lights, its cyan pupils revealing a frenzied murderous intent that chilled him to the bone.
As the dust from the blow gradually settled, he could feel the immense pressure from the man-sized soul beast.
He was being watched closely, as if any movement would result in a terrifying attack. Just the sight of its bared fangs, its sturdy limbs, and its two-inch-long claws told him that if he touched anything of it, he would be shattered!
But he still had a question in his mind: why did the eyes of this spirit beast reveal such a striking resemblance to the Exploding Owlbear he had encountered before?
"Roar!"
Under Uchiha Uran's tense gaze, the Wind Scythe Beast suddenly moved.
Is it coming?
A flash of yellow light flashed before his eyes, and before he could react, Uchiha Uran could only hastily raise his bone spear. The next moment, a tremendous force surged from the center of the spear.
With a crackling sound, the spear, so highly anticipated, broke apart, its sharp ends piercing his chest and abdomen. The pain nearly made his eyes pop out!
And it wasn't over yet. He had just landed after being swatted away, his ears ringing as he saw a figure leap from the air, lunging towards him!
Dodge! Dodge!
It was a stark resemblance to the past, but having just been swatted away, he had no strength to even roll. The pain in his chest and abdomen was still throbbing him. If the bone spear hadn't blocked the attack, he would have been ripped in two.
Suddenly, in a split second, the young man quickly snatched up a scattered half-broken bone spear and aimed the pointed end at the mid-air, helpless soul beast.
He was taking a gamble: if the wind sickle beast truly went berserk, he'd be dead. While the bone spear would pierce the wind sickle beast, pinning it to the ground, he'd also be pounced upon by the descending soul beast. In his current state, he wouldn't be able to roll over.
But if the female wind sickle beast wasn't berserk, given its nature, soul beasts wouldn't die with him. After all, facing life and death, unless he'd killed its mate, a life wouldn't seek its own demise.
Most importantly, it had a mate! How could it possibly have one if it went berserk?
Facing the test of life and death, the young man watched the soul beast creep closer and closer in mid-air, countless images flashing through his mind. Life or death depended on whether the soul beast dodged.
What was the point of a soul beast perishing alongside a human? Dodge!
The next moment, the young man closed his eyes in despair.
The black and yellow figure in the air fell recklessly, slamming heavily into the young man. A pair of sickle-like claws slashed open his chest, severing his ribs, but he had no strength to continue cutting.
A bone spear stood at his side, piercing through the wind sickle beast's pupil. As the wind sickle beast rushed forward, it sent a pale rib directly into its brain.
It refused to even turn its head.
