Chapter 5 - Ground Mission Part One

Tin-Can broke the atmosphere, picking up speed, rising heat spiked across the ship's hull. Their thrusters in seconds, full throttled as the atmospheric and hydrogen thrusters powered on. Former for space travel, latter for planetary travel.

Most times smaller faring ships were barely able to help but rattle when large ships like this came down fast. Had there been any living on the planet as the ship depended overhead their chest would have thundered or rather would have felt the thunder.

Tin-can's landing panels unfolded before the hulking vessel touched down with a deep rumble. Whilst tidal waves of air pushed up a small sandstorm that lasted as long as it took the engines to power down.

A team of five were dispatched from the vessel. Three security and two scientists. They were given a land based rover and enough supplies to last the whole team a couple of weeks. If they stayed long, their first phase had to be recon. Their target? The old wreck. Recon consisted of looking for life, its model, history based on its ship designated tags and finally if it's still powered. These operations often only last a week. But sometimes teams get cocky. Especially when a stronger sensory picked up no life or energy signature. That being tin-can a mistake often made despite the danger of making that mistake.

But thats only if they were reconing. The second phase was to locate scrap that was good enough for a larger than a few credits sell. Like critical technology or vital parts a ship may need. While the last phase would be to locate a way in and explore only a few hours. Given their supplies would only allow for that much. To which they will return with their findings. That said there were going to be two ground missions. One for those basic measures and the second would occur with a scrap team and an assortment of engineers, scientists, security, the gist.

After they set off for the vessel. its crew would attempt to survey some of the area with one security guard as their body guard. This was for protection from possible native life and for the scientist or engineer to search for deep deposits of material. Sparrow was running a multi operation here. Though some had some opinions about maybe doubling those teams. Alien tech, even ancient, was still a dangerous endeavor. Sparrow scoffed at that. It would waste lives. Whereas a smaller team meant if there were issues they would learn from it..

One team out for a potentially dangerous target and one for some harmless surveying. He even took precautions to have scanners on weather patterns and a small drone to track the survey teams. He cared greatly for his crew and preferred safety over risk. Even if he had some… reservations of what meant safety. If he could help it, albeit greed does muddle him from time to time. After a night's rest he often gets a hold on his emotions. This one didn't seem dangerous, however for the past hour he felt awfully bad and it was nagging at him, but he had checked and rechecked. Attempting to locate the source of discomfort to no avail.

Although he didn't call off any teams as he knew, relying solely on your instincts can prove fatal to a job like his and sometimes even wrong. He only hoped this too was the case. Or maybe he would be dead wrong and pay. Damn it what was nagging at him so badly…

If only that could have been true.

Synthesis was in the midst of repairs, it has barely been another week and progress is certainly slow although to fix this the machine did craft a dozen or so small constructor drones. They could only do small task, like support him.

Which was fine, small drones were the largest machine he cared to make, using solar power as a battery for these machines. They were roughly the size of a human, only standing at four feet. Whereas their energy expenditure wasn't costly it did show. These machines even if both batteries were filled could only last three hours tops. Blame the lack of battery components.. despite this being a factory for individual machines. Oh he definitely looked, but whatever was used to power those machines wasn't the same method as a simple battery.

Granted with there being a dozen of them in teams of four, it came down to an efficient rotation. Now the flight wasn't the only reason they had such short battery life, it was the tools they utilized, supplies they carried and parts they had to upkeep in their weight. Regardless they were of incredible help, if the span of two months were considered to be done alone then what he could do in two weeks was done in a week. Halving the workload effectively.

So far Synthesis has finished the repairs to the controls, whilst the coolant tanks were underway and the ribbed piping at the time was being replaced. With the extra help, it computed a rough estimation of its finished time.

Three weeks at minimum and four weeks should there be any disruptions. Given the chances were considered slim due to the lack of life or events so far on the planet. The machine even deduced the sheer power this reactor could give him. Not only could it virtually power up the entire ship. It could do so much more, given this ship will likely never fly again. It could serve as a fortress of operations. Even a factory if he gets a production line running and mining operations.

Just comparing this ship's reactor to the solar panels is like comparing a candle's flame to a cosmic supernova. That is like the difference between heaven and hell, astronomical. Its calculations are estimated to be nearly three point eight million times greater than those three large grid solar panels. The sheer number of them could not be explained easily! In ancient times nuclear reactors were quite popular. Now they are far too out of date. The reactor in current use to the machine isn't something that has a name.

The explanation is; it used an advanced version of the fabled "Demon Core" which were two plutonium half circles separated by a metallic disk. In this case it was upscaled and advanced to a much grander version. Using neutron energy in a sort of atomic reaction. Granted that was mostly the secondary purpose. With the first containing high levels of neutrons to make something akin to a very long lasting and powerful reactor core. The coolant was liquid lead, with a soft mixture of chemical cold. All to keep said reactor from wiping a fleet from existence or in other words a whole solar system. he did not know the exact details yet. This was all a projected model.

He only looks for ways to repair. Apparently the coolant had a part in the reactor's increased energy output. Whilst the recycled system only allowed for it to at least keep running. Even still this reactor was five times stronger alone than some old nuclear reactor. Not including the potential the machine found in this specific topic. Given a ping from its internal system, it focused it back on current events.

His system echoed in a monotone authority.

[Understood]

He replied his thoughts snapping back to a specific topic. Repairs!

And so it continued without another thought stream.
