The rest of the week went by, Seraphina's messages getting worse by the day, but now she knew what it was all about; someone who knew their secret was threatening her, and she had no way to counter it.
That Friday, after classes ended, she went out of the lobby like usual and saw a paper fall from the ceiling. Looked up and saw nothing. The whole room was dark, but then, one of her eyes turned yellow, and she saw something like a heat signature of someone, a woman escaping.
She picked up the paper, and all it said was
"Enjoy your days, I am coming for you." It was not addressed to anyone by anyone, so she could not exactly confirm the finer details of the letter, and decided to show Jack.
Serena came to the conclusion that the woman had mistook her for Seraphina; they had different numbers, but looked the same. With messaging, it would always reach Seraphina, but why get physical? Probably to lay out a bigger threat. But that led her back to another question: Why lay out a bigger threat?
She was more unsettled on the car ride home. The streets seemed empty, and Seraphina said she was going to confront the aggressors, which could be why they wanted to scare her, she thought to herself.
When she got home, the place looked even more extravagant than before, new expensive things lined the halls, and there was a new room next to Seraphina's, specifically for her.
It was just as sophisticated as her sisters and she had a walk-in closet filled with designer brands, and there was something that garnered more attention.
Amidst the designer clothing was gallant Armor, and a sword in its hilt was stashed beside it; it looked beautiful.
But she then realized that she was home alone, and these big halls made her feel even lonelier than usual, and remembering how she appreciated solitude, she could only look back and sigh, Be careful what you wish for because you might just get it.
And as she settled in the Living room, there was a power outage, and it was evening time, but the whole place was dark, and that was when she noticed this violent storm brewing in the distance.
She reached out for her phone and turned on the light, then asked around for the staff, but there was no response. She was home alone, and something about the entire concept of being alone in this ominous house scared her to the bone.
She then realized that the place became bone-chilling after the lights went out, typical for a geographical location without any sunlight. She went to check out the fuse box to see if everything was alright, but after opening it, she felt like a noob when it came to technology; everything in there was different from what was made by humans. It was probably Vampire technology.
Then blinding lights hit her face, followed by a thunderstorm, and at that moment, even her phone went dead. That was when she heard someone call her, in her own voice.
"Seraphina?" she asked under her breath and followed the sound, it seemed to not just call her but allure her to it, she was in a part of the house she had never explored, she was going to the basement.
As she descended the stared the small voice calling her became much more dominant, almost hypnotic, like it was a primal desire or instinct to follow it.
She ended up in the basement, and there she saw this mirror; it was covered by a tapestry that depicted an image of A man holding a multicolored orb.
Then she held the tapestry and felt something within her awaken. Just then, her eyes radiated a blinding light, but Serena saw beyond that, herself.
She said to her,
"Serena, I have been waiting gallantly for you to find me."
"Who are you?" Serena asked, knowing Seraphina would never use such complicated words.
"Oh, me, why don't we say, I'm the mirror on the wall, I have something important to tell you. We don't have much time, but let me just break down the facts for you, Serena. Your father is not the only one who had a secret identity, your mother… the…her…"
Her voice became static at the end, and before the mirror dimmed, she said
"You inherited the legacy of a Starweaver."
What was she talking about? Serena felt confused; was her mother from another race as well, but then in that case she would not be a Dhampir, or was it much more complicated than that?
Her thoughts began to overrule logic, and got intertwined, leaving her going mad in a dark room all on her own.
The next day, as the sun's first rays hit the sky, she woke up, her memory of what had happened last night distant, thinking it was all a dream, she turned around.
There lay a mirror, and the very same tapestry was on the floor, before she could align her thoughts, Jack went down and said, afraid to the core,
"Seraphina, are you alright? What are you doing down here? You had me worried."
"…" Serena remained silent, contemplating whether she should tell him she was Serena, but she ended up just asking.
"Who exactly was Mom?"
"You do not expect him to know that, do you?" the mirror said, sounding amused by her actions.
"Seraphina…" Jack butted in
"It's Serena," she corrected,
"What are you doing in the basement? It's lined with dangerous things. Did you remove that tapestry?" he asked, pointing to the one that once covered the mirror.
Then he bent down to pick it up and was sent flying. Now she knew that the tapestry was not ordinary, and it was just used to protect the mirror; it must be extraordinary.
Then she noticed the fine print on the tapestry.
"The Tapestry of Secrets, capable of hiding everything it protects from unauthorized access."
That probably meant she was authorized, but the question was why?
