Chapter 16 - TOA 16: The Gigantomachy

The Phlegraean Fields, the battleground of gods and Gigantes.

The vast plain was so immense that even hundred-meter-tall giants seemed insignificant upon it.

These monsters, born from the corpse of Sefar, hurled torches and massive boulders toward distant Mount Olympus.

Not only that, they dragged three mountains, intending to stack them into a makeshift ladder to scale the towering heights of Olympus.

With Athena's magic, the group arrived at the battlefield, witnessing the giants' frenzied assault on the gods from afar.

"Stay safe and keep your distance. On this battlefield, the gods may not have the leisure to protect you," Athena warned Morpheus and Medea once more. Her form shimmered with light, transforming into a war goddess clad in armor, wielding a spear and shield, before charging into the fray.

Heracles drew his weapon, letting out a thunderous war cry to announce his arrival, and rushed into battle alongside her.

Artemis notched an arrow, her bow drawn taut. The arrow, under her divine control, streaked like a silver meteor toward a giant.

The gods, stripped of their mechanical bodies, could no longer unleash their futuristic attacks. Instead, they relied on magic, drawing on their connection to the Root to manifest their Authorities.

Their attacks weren't always effective. As Artemis's arrow neared its target, the giant swung a massive boulder, deflecting the shot with a resounding boom. The arrow veered off, crashing into the ground and leaving a massive crater.

In the distance, Hecate raised her torch, its flames roaring toward a giant. But the giant's body surged with powerful magical energy, summoning a tidal wave that clashed with the fire, locking them in a stalemate.

The gods were mighty, but the Gigantes were equally formidable. Their bodies seemed highly resistant to divine attacks, and not a single giant had fallen.

That is, until one man turned the tide.

Heracles charged into the fray, swinging his weapon with ferocious strength, smashing a giant's knee. His blow shattered the giant's protective barrier, dealing devastating damage.

As the giant howled in pain, Heracles leaped back, nocking an arrow and aiming for its eye.

The arrow struck true, piercing the eyeball and plunging into the brain.

With the giant's mystical defenses fading, Zeus summoned his lightning, hurling a bolt that struck through the wound.

Boom!

Blinding lightning flashed across the skies, infused with divine power, surging into the giant's body and erupting from within, obliterating its form. After a long struggle, the first giant finally fell.

This breakthrough eased the pressure on the Greek gods. If they could kill these creatures, victory was possible!

Morpheus and Medea stood aside, observing the giants. Morpheus couldn't help but find their origins amusing.

So, what should've been the Titans' revenge is now Sefar's revenge. The myths here sure have changed.

He turned to Medea. "Set up your temple as a turret for attacks. No giants will get close to you!"

Temples were common in many magical systems, but Morpheus's temple and Medea's were entirely different.

Both might share traits like "stronghold" or "defense," but their casting and operation were worlds apart.

"Be careful. The giants' skin is anti-civilization armor, highly resistant to magic and divine techniques. If Heracles hadn't broken through their defenses with raw power, killing even one would be nearly impossible," Artemis cautioned, nocking another arrow. This time, she aimed at a giant charging Heracles.

She knew her attack would likely fail, but her goal was to draw its attention.

The giants weren't the original Sefar, but their anti-civilization resistance was formidable. Still, sufficient force could breach their defenses, which was why they dodged or countered divine attacks.

As expected, the giant attacking Heracles turned to block Artemis's arrow, giving Heracles an opening. He struck again, this time smashing the giant's toe.

With a single blow, the toe caved in, the nail shattering to expose soft tissue.

Medea, meanwhile, had begun constructing her temple stronghold. She wove spells, channeling Hecate's Authority into the surrounding area, isolating it into a fortress that accelerated her casting and shielded her from attacks.

Once it was set, she looked at Morpheus with concern. "Be careful!"

"Don't worry, I will!" Morpheus nodded, raising his right hand. As magical energy surged within him, a radiant sword appeared... a double-handed sword.

Gripping it with both hands, he aimed at a distant giant.

Then, he unleashed its power.

"Excalibur!!!"

A dazzling torrent of light surged forth like a flood, sweeping toward the giant. The raging magical energy became a hurricane, pulverizing everything in its path.

This was the ultimate torrent of magical power, forged from the planet's strength and humanity's collective prayers... a final weapon.

The Olympian gods froze, staring at the source of the light with disbelief.

"The Holy Sword of Promised Victory!" Zeus declared, his voice heavy with effort to remain composed, yet unable to hide his shock.

"He's a wielder of the Holy Sword of Promised Victory?!" Athena's eyes widened, staring at Morpheus, unable to fathom that this man wielded the planet-forged ultimate blade.

Apollo's gaze grew distant, as if admiring a masterpiece. As a god of prophecy, he'd foreseen glimpses of this, but its beauty still stunned him.

It was magnificent... a galactic flood of light tearing through the skies!

Ares, Hera, and the others gaped in astonishment. They'd thought Heracles would be the key to this battle, yet a human had emerged, wielding the very weapon that once slew Sefar!

Artemis blinked, aware of Morpheus's magic but still shocked by the scene. The sword not only bore the traits of the Holy Sword of Promised Victory but also wielded immense destructive power and vast range. Together, these made it a perfect tool for slaying giants.

The giant engulfed by the light couldn't resist, reduced to fundamental particles.

Those merely grazed by the torrent had their anti-civilization armor stripped, exposing vulnerable flesh.

Medea, heeding Morpheus's advice, seized the moment, launching a barrage of magical bolts.

The countless bolts rained down like a meteor shower, pummeling a giant that had lost nearly a third of its body. Amid the explosive roars, the gods snapped out of their shock and joined the assault, harvesting the wounded giants.

In an instant, over a dozen of the hundred-plus giants were destroyed!

"He's optimized that magic. It's much stronger than last time," Hecate murmured, incinerating a giant with her torch's flames while glancing at Morpheus.

Athena, overhearing, asked in confusion, "That was magic?"

Wasn't it the planet-forged ultimate weapon?

"If it was the true Sword of Promised Victory, that strike would've wiped them all out," Hecate said, shaking her head. "Don't you remember that past battle? The Sword of Promised Victory's power wasn't this restrained."

Her explanation clarified why the strike was weaker than the historical Sword of Promised Victory, but it left Athena even more stunned.

"So it's magic?!"

"Yes, a spell he developed himself. His mastery of magic is remarkable…" Hecate smiled, relaxed despite the giants, as if unconcerned. "But he's probably got more spells to test."

"More spells?" Athena wondered what else he had in store when a new light appeared.

It wasn't an emitting light but a reflection from a white, towering figure.

A giant, matching the hundred-meter stature of the others, its terrifying form evoking memories of the civilization-devouring Sefar, who once nearly destroyed the Earth's gods.

"Sefar!"

"No, it's not Sefar... something's different!"

The gods cried out in alarm. If this was truly Sefar, the battle might end with their annihilation.

"Using the history I shared, he crafted two spells. One is the Sword of Promised Victory. The other is Sefar, transforming himself into Sefar for combat. He calls it the 'Velber Formula,'" Hecate explained, the least tense of all, watching as if at a play.

"This is magic too?!"

"Don't attack me, folks! I'm just testing magic!" a booming voice echoed from the White Death's form. It swung its arm, smashing into a Gigante.

Boom!

Raw, physical power clashed with ferocious intensity.

The voice and actions confirmed to the gods that this youthful Sefar was their ally, not an enemy.

The Velber Formula, a spell Morpheus crafted based on the Velber's invasion of Earth, transformed his body into a state akin to Sefar... the Velber 2 that assaulted the planet. But it had significant limitations.

It wasn't based on the real Sefar but on its legend, manifesting traits like "immense physical strength," "a shell immune to stellar heat," "anti-civilization armor," and "gradual strengthening as civilization grows."

What lay within remained unknown to Morpheus.

The spell was also mana-intensive, relying solely on his own magical energy to manipulate the surrounding mana. To ease the burden, he'd need to expand this story, creating a phase or higher-dimensional space... a divine realm encapsulating this ancient tale.

In such a realm, Sefar would serve as the apocalyptic demon king, making it easier to mimic or summon.

After pummeling a giant with over a dozen punches, tearing through its armor and killing it, Morpheus ended the spell.

Against these giants, the Sword of Promised Victory was more efficient and less taxing.

He was here to test, but now he'd fight with his best tools.

Morpheus, exhilarated, drew his staff, his coat billowing in the wind.

Around him, a yellow dagger, a blue chalice, and a green astrolabe orbited like planets around a sun.

Magical energy erupted, tainting the surroundings.

The world turned golden.

All eyes turned to the source. Behind Morpheus, streams of light wove together, forming two radiant wings.

In that moment, he was divine.
