Chapter 26 - Chapter 26

When Eva got home, she immediately went upstairs and got her books. She packed them and went to her table, sat down and started reading. "What are you doing?" Zerian stared at her with an eyebrow raised.

"Take a good guess, it involves a book," Eva said, mocking his question without taking her eyes off her books.

Zerian glared at her, knowing fully well that she is messing with him. "Why are you so serious? The world will come to an end and I don't think they will ask you your grades to get into heaven."

Eva stopped what she was doing and dropped the book down and stared at him. "Till then, it is currently important," she said, then turning back to her books.

"You're boring," Zerian said before leaving the room. It was just Eva and her books left in the room, she couldn't be more happier that he left. She could now focus more.

For days, Eva focused mainly on her books. She stayed in school longer so she and Jayne could study together and she would study on her own too, till the exams were over.

After the last day of exams, Jayne went with Eva to her house and they both collapsed on her bed, laughing out of exhaustion from the sleepless nights they had. "If I don't get an A, I will sue that school," Jayne said, making them both giggle more.

Jayne stood up straight and held a strand of Eva's hair. "Your hair is still white. I thought you were playing a prank on me, this looks really white."

Eva got up and went to her mirror. The brown dye she kept on her hair everyday suddenly feels like light, too light, like sparing darkness on the light.

The dye wasn't working on her hair. It feels like the white hair was swallowing every other color up. Eva thought she could keep it all behind her: dye her hair, wear contact lenses and be cautious.

She didn't ask Zerian about the hair and eyes color because she wants to focus on what was at hand. But it feels like the more she kept the water from checking on something, it keeps on filling the bucket until it can no longer contain it.

Eva held her hair, confused, shocked and something she does always feel fear.

Jayne walked up to her. "Are you okay? You know you can speak to me," she said, touching Eva's shoulder.

Eva tried to calm herself down and thought of an excuse to give Jayne for why her hair, which she saw brown, was now white.

"My real hair," she blurted out.

Jayne looked a bit confused. "I don't get it."

"My hair is naturally white, but I was scared people will not accept me so I always kept it dyed brown. But it seems like I can't hide it again. Surprise!" she said, waving her hands in the air.

Jayne stared at her, confused, trying to put all her words together. Disbelief was written all over her face.

"You said firstly that you dye your hair white, that your hair is brown. Now you are telling me that you dye your brown and the actual color is white? What do you take me for?" Jayne asked, a bit of sadness could be heard in her tone.

Eva felt like she could read her emotions. She ran and hugged her tightly. "I am sorry for lying, I didn't know if you would accept," she said to Jayne, still hugging her, praying to all the gods that she would believe her.

"It's cool. Our relationship is still fresh, trust is still an ongoing process. But I am here whenever you need me," Jayne said to Eva. She just nodded in response.

"Prom! Who is taking you?" Jayne asked excitedly. This was something she looks forward to.

"I barely speak to people, who would notice me?" Eva said, already defeated.

"Well, I want John to ask me."

"You mean that nerdy looking guy, who is mostly invisible even in a conversation of three people?" Eva joked.

"Shut up, that is not nice!"

John was a red head from Ireland, a quiet boy, always on his own or with his books. Jayne got to know him better when they got paired for a science experiment and she noticed he was funny and nice. "I just admire him, I just hope he asks me."

"When was the last time you spoke to him?" Eva asked, knowing fully well that Jayne rarely talks in school and now she is mentioning a guy for the first time, which is weird for a talkative Jayne.

"Ehh….. hmmm, after the science experiment," Jayne said, looking down, trying to avoid Eva's judgmental look.

Eva tried to hold her laughter in. "Wow, in that case I am sure he will ask you. Like, why would he talk to any other girl for months now?" Eva said sarcastically.

"Why are you like this? You could have at least pretended to agree with me," she said, falling to the bed in defeat. Eva giggled a bit. "I did, didn't I?"

"Sarcasm was written all over your tone." Jayne stood up and asked, "Who do you wish to ask you to the prom?"

"My bed."

"Eva!"

"Fine, Jackson."

Jayne stared at her. "Jackson? You mean that scumbag?" "Wow, that was unexpected," Eva said, smiling.

"That jerk stole my lunch box and returned it empty!"

"He is a sweet jerk who wanted attention."

"From the wrong people. The only nice thing about him is that he is cute, but a bad personality is always a turn off," Jayne said, trying to get Eva to change her mind.

"Well, I want to give him a try."

"You will regret it."

"I'm gonna see for myself."

Jayne sighed in defeat. "Fine, your heartbreak. Where is that friend of yours? Maybe he can speak some sense into you?" She turned her head back, expecting him to be in the room as always.

"You called?" Zerian said, appearing in front of her.

"Ahhhh!" Jayne shouted and fell down from the bed.
