The world never ran out of ways to remind me I didn’t belong. Cruel jokes in hallways. Laughter that followed me home. Words sharper than blades, carving deeper than bruises ever could. 

Bit by bit, I shrank into myself until there was nothing left but silence and the weight of my own loneliness.

People on the sidewalk turned to stare as if I'd just escaped prison—which, technically, wasn't wrong.


I spread my arms wide, sucking in the crisp air like I'd been underwater for a year.


Which I had. A whole damn year. Locked in that building, doing shady, illegal things just to pay off a debt that I had already paid a hundred times over.


"Damn that monster," I muttered under my breath, clutching my chest as though my heart had claws.


Vince had stolen one year of my life away—one year I should've spent with my boys.


I tilted my head up, and there they were. My boys. Their faces, bright and bold, plastered across the massive billboards of the city.
