Chapter 22 - Moments Before Chaos

Soraya's POV

The screen lit up, and I almost squealed.

"Maya!"

Finally. After trying to reach her all night, it has finally connected.

Her face appeared on the screen, but instead of smiling back at me, she frowned, her brows knitted in frustration.

"Don't you dare 'Maya!' me, Soraya," she scolded, her voice sharp. "Do you know how worried I've been? You disappeared! You didn't even remember to text me on time!"

I winced, guilt washing over me as her words landed like tiny arrows. "I'm sorry, I really am. I came to the mall to tell you, but you weren't there."

Her expression softened slightly, but I could tell she wasn't done being mad. "You still should have called."

"I know." I sighed, my shoulders sagging. "Forgive me?"

Maya let out a long breath and finally cracked a small smile. "Fine. I forgive you. But you have to tell me you're okay."

"I'm okay." I smiled, this time meaning it.
