Chapter 8 - The Tuff Fluff

Rem and Amaia walked shoulder to shoulder down the broad main street of Darkgloom. Stalls crowded the sides, canopies of stitched hides flapping lightly in the wind. The air echoed with voices of hundreds of conversations happening over one another, none of them made sense to Rem's ears. She frowned and looked toward's Amaia. "How come I can't understand what anyone's saying Amaia?"

Amaia's eyes widened as if struck by a sudden realization. "My lady, you haven't cast any translation magic. Without it, you can't speak or comprehend any of the local languages. It's not surprising the residents here don't speak human languages."

Rem sighed, lifting one hand in irritation. "This can hardly be blamed on you Amaia. Even I didn't think of this. We rushed here straight off the Arc, and I didn't give it a second thought." Rem raised her arm in front of her body, fingers moving through the air in a wave. The sound around her shifted, muffled sounds unraveling into clarity. What was once foreign turned instantly familiar. The spell flew through the street, manipating sound waves so her ears heard only heard words she understood.

Rem glanced at Amaia just in time to see her cast the same spell. Her construct's lips moved in silent command, and then she straightened up as her armor hummed faintly. Both of them could now follow every conversation drifting past them. Rem rolled her eyes, saying under her breath. "I need to remember these kinds of details. I'm supposed to be leading humanity even if it's now just a party of one."

The street spilled wide ahead of them, and her eyes caught on something small. Among the crowd darted a figure barely reaching her waist a non-human with animal ears and a bushy tail swaying behind her. The girl's laughter carried lightly on the wind as she ran between stalls. Rem's steps slowed, her gaze fixating on her fluffy tail.

Amaia noticed the fascination in Rem's eyes and gave a small smile. "My lady, this species would be called a demi-human. At least, in our own mythology, that is what they are called. Are you interested in her?"

Rem shook her head quickly. "No. I just love her fluffy tail." Rem's lips curved up with sudden amusement. "While we are down here, Amaia, remind me to get some sort of fox or dog to raise. Wouldn't it be incredible if we could acquire a little pet and use our advanced magic to turn it into a world-destroying monster all while it stays a cute little fur ball?"

Amaia's armored shoulders stiffened, the idea visibly rattling her. A fifteen- to thirty-pound fox capable of reducing continents to ash, all while remaining cuddly and harmless-looking, was terrifying. Yet knowing her lady, and the records her father left behind, Amaia could not dismiss the possibility of this happening it has before. If anyone can accomplish such madness, it's Rem.

As Amaia's thoughts raced with worry, her eyes caught on a stall just ahead. It felt almost like divine intervention. Cages lined the booth, filled with small animals whose fur shined under the lanterns. Among them, fox's with puffy tails curled up lazily behind the bars.

Amaia turned to Rem and quickly said. "My lady, it looks like they are selling pet animals over there. I see several fox creatures among them. You said you love fluffy tails why not buy one of them?"

Rem froze as if lightning struck her spine. Her eyes opening wide, then looking toward's the stall. The sight locked her in place for a heartbeat before she ran forward, her boots hitting the cobblestone street.
