Chapter 33 - Nighttime Attack

The sky gradually darkened, and the streetlights in the town square slowly lit up.

No monsters had been seen all afternoon. Although the crowd didn't say it out loud, they secretly thought the monster scare might be an exaggeration.

After all, even if the base was really developing some kind of biological weapon, the numbers probably wouldn't be that high. If it really spread throughout the town, maybe they'd be lucky enough not to encounter anything.

Take Norton, the Black lawyer, for example. He was already planning in his mind that if things didn't improve by tomorrow morning, he'd take a few people and drive away from this place.

Although the International Criminal Police officer of unknown origin said that help would arrive, Norton felt it was better to control his own destiny.

"Crack!"

"Crack!"

As everyone whispered amongst themselves, trying to figure out what to do tomorrow, a chilling thwack-thwack suddenly echoed from outside the windows.

Don't misunderstand, this wasn't the sound of a philosophical debate on the meaning of life, but rather the sound of large arthropods crawling on the glass wall.

Li Qingyuan had originally thought that covering the glass with paper would prevent those Poison Scorpion Flies from bothering them, since those things seemed to be attracted to light.

But now it seemed that it had nothing to do with being attracted to light, but because the things were simply everywhere.

Poison Scorpion Flies should be somewhat similar to mosquitoes in human society, only appearing when it was completely dark. And as the lowest level of the entire food chain, they completely relied on their sheer numbers to survive.

God only knew how many Poison Scorpion Flies were out there!

"Ah! What monster is that?"

Someone looked through the observation hole and saw the terrifying flying insects clinging to the glass wall, and shouted in surprise.

Giant insects, each the size of an adult's hand, were swarming on the outer wall. These monstrous bugs looked somewhat like mutated, giant dragonflies, but they had comical yet terrifying heads.

On their six legs were sharp claws, similar to a praying mantis's sickle. And at their tails, they had a deadly weapon, much like a scorpion's stinger.

These things were actually quite fragile. After all, they were only a lifeform similar to a mosquito, but they were a very deadly threat to humans.

Honestly, Li Qingyuan would rather face a Mantis Giant alone than deal with a swarm of Poison Scorpion Flies.

You see, a mosquito bite would only give you a bump, but getting bitten by one of these things would likely have you reporting to God.

Their bodies were a hundred times bigger than a mosquito, so their toxins were naturally amplified by more than a hundred times as well.

"Are those monsters out there?" The black lawyer asked Li Qingyuan, his head covered in cold sweat. He had been planning how to get people out of here tomorrow, but now he was secretly glad he hadn't made a hasty decision.

The observation windows were limited, so everyone could only rely on the rustling sounds from outside to judge the situation. Even without seeing the scene, the uniform rustling sound alone could make someone with trypophobia faint.

"Locusts came from the smoke, and the Lord gave them the power of scorpions!" Mrs. Carmody produced a scented candle from somewhere and mumbled, clutching it in her hands.

"Can't you find a way to shut her up?" Ms. Amanda leaned over to Li Qingyuan and asked in a low voice.

Mrs. Carmody was like a toad clinging to someone's foot; it wouldn't bite, but it was disgusting!

"I could make her shut up permanently, but I don't think everyone in the supermarket would agree," Li Qingyuan shrugged helplessly. If he could, he'd have liked to use a swift and decisive method to gather all the living forces in the entire supermarket, but he really couldn't!

He was only slightly stronger than an ordinary person at the moment. Although the Demolition Expert ability gave him some self-preservation strength, it couldn't overwhelm everyone in the supermarket.

Even if he used guns and explosives to make everyone submit temporarily, who knew if those guys would violently resist?

He was just one person. If someone took a shot at him in the night while he was sleeping, he'd be finished.

Moreover, this mission was to save people, not to kill them. If he killed everyone, what was the point of him coming to this world?

"Do you often kill people on your missions?" Ms. Amanda sat down beside him and asked, biting his ear.

You know, having a woman whispering near your ear is actually pretty ticklish.

Li Qingyuan frowned, turning his head to look at Ms. Amanda, who was practically trying to squeeze into his arms. He was filled with confusion.

Didn't this woman have a thing with the main character in the movie? Why is she acting like she's ready to throw herself at me?

When did my personality become so charming?

It's a pity, the damn director didn't want to spend money back then, so he hired all extras, which really didn't meet my aesthetic standards.

The only person with any looks in the whole supermarket should be the cashier, Sally. Even though she has a square, poker face, at least she's young and pretty, and her features are okay, barely reaching the beauty standard.

But Sally is currently with her soldier boyfriend. The three soldiers were severely scolded by others in the afternoon and are now huddled in the corner, not daring to make a sound.

Boom!

Suddenly, a violent impact shook the windows, startling everyone.

The intensity of the sound suggested an adult was ramming the glass with all their might.

The supermarket's windows were made of reinforced glass. Normally, even if an adult smashed their head against it, they wouldn't be able to break it. However, for the Skeleton Birds hunting outside, their physical structure was far tougher than a human's.

If the Poison Scorpion Flies were like mosquitoes in Earth's ecosystem, then the Skeleton Birds were somewhat like Dragonflies. They specifically preyed on the Poison Scorpion Flies because they couldn't afford to mess with anything else!

The Poison Scorpion Flies swarmed the entire town, so the Skeleton Birds started their hunt at night.

The Skeleton Birds hunted by diving from the sky at the Poison Scorpion Flies, using their Pterosaur-like sharp beaks to peck them up.

Their beaks were incredibly tough, so they wouldn't be damaged even if they hit a rock. Therefore, they didn't care what they pecked at.

If it were a concrete wall, they would only make a small hole on the surface. But for the supermarket's glass, each peck from the Skeleton Birds created a new crack.

The people inside the supermarket couldn't see what was happening outside. They could only watch helplessly as cracks spread across the glass wall. The shattered glass was held in place by the transparent tape, creating strange bulges.
