Chapter 25 - A heart unmasked

Maya laid on her bed restlessly, she looked at the wall click hanging on her room wall. Her chest felt heavy, restless. No matter how much she tried to push the thoughts away, her mind kept circling back to Adrian. With a deep breath, she grabbed her jacket and decided—she had to see him, maybe if he saw her he would snap and then she would see more reasons to hate him and stop thinking about him, she saw that as a good plan.

The Cole mansion loomed tall when she arrived, intimidating with its gates and lights. Maya took several deep breaths she wanted to turn back but she just couldn't, her mind was screaming at her to turn around and leave but her body was operating on its will.

She rand the door bell, then a servant came opening the door.

"Good evening, miss," a servant bowed politely when he spotted her.

"Can I come in, am here for Adrian" she boldly said

"Oh yes miss Maya, come in" the servant said knowing Maya and Adrian were study partners

"Thanks, I'll wait for him" she said but was a bit confised as to why the servant was hesitating

"Am so sorry miss but I just remembered that sir had said earlier that he wished to have no visitors" the servant said with heads bowed, Maya just gave a polite smile

"That's fine, I'll take my leave, just give me a minute here" she asked, the servant agreed and took his leave

But Maya didn't move. She just stood still, staring at the enormous house. So much wealth… yet so little happiness, she thought bitterly. What was the point of having everything if you were still somewhat broken inside?

Maya's eyes caught the wild steps in the middle of the parlour, she didn't know what she was doing but her legs against her will had already started climbing those steps, she passed many locked rooms, that was when Maya realised her self 'what the hell are you doing Maya? If Adrian catches you he will definitely do something crazy, just leave please' she screamed at herself mentally.

Just as she was about to turn around and leave she heard something, turning back, she walked closer to the room where it was coming from—soft, muffled sobs. Pausing, she peered through the half-open door. She could see him..... Adrian.

He was slumped on the floor, head buried in his hands, a half-empty bottle beside him, and a picture of a young lady. The sight tugged at her heart, without thinking, Maya pushed the door open. She had expected him to snap at her, to yell for barging into his private space. But instead… Adrian looked up at her, eyes red and glassy, it looked like his was calling out to her with those eyes, Maya slowly walked up to him, slowly sitting on the bed she whispered his name "Adrian" then he just got up and sat next to her on the bed then he just laid his head on her laps.

Maya froze. Her heart hammered against her ribs. He was drunk, vulnerable, so unlike the arrogant boy who usually tormented her. His shoulders trembled, and the sound of his sobs broke something inside her.

"I'm… messed up, Maya," Adrian muttered, voice slurred with pain. "My life's a wreck. You know my mum was the only one who actually cared about me, my dad used to live me but that was when she was still alive, she died when I was just seven..... It was an accident well that's what I had thought...." he paused then he got up and looked into her eyes, Maya could see the pain evident in his eyes, it kind of broke her heart

"But guess what? I killed her Maya, she had developed a cancer after giving birth to me.... My existence caused her death" he said crying even more "And he won't stop reminding me of it I hate him, he is the worst father ever, all he cared about is his business not me or mother"

Maya's breath hitched. She wanted to protest, to tell him it wasn't his fault, but the words stuck in her throat.

Adrian chuckled bitterly, though no humor reached his eyes. "You don't get it. He hates me. Victor Cole—he's ruthless. To him I'm just… a mistake. No one understands me. Not even Xavier. That's why I… I bully people, why I push everyone away. It's the only time I feel anything. I'm… I'm so fucked up."

Maya's hand trembled, then slowly she placed it against his hair, stroking gently. Her chest ached seeing him like this—so broken, so human and vulnerable.

"No, Adrian," she whispered, voice soft but firm. "You're not entirely broken, everyone has their demon that they are fighting, I have mine and you have yours and all we have to do is keep fighting our demons and we will prevail" she said

"No no Maya, my demon already won, a long time ago it won over me, what do I do.... I just miss her, I miss my mum" he said looking up at her, eyes searching, vulnerable like a lost child. Maya's heart clenched.

"No body loves me, because I'm incapable of being loved and maybe live just doesn't even exist" he sobbed

In that moment she decided—if no one else would give him that love or help him fight his demons then she would. She would teach him that love truly exists, show him that it existed… and that he was worthy of it.

"Adrian I'll help you fight your demons, I'll be here for you" She said while stroking his hair he laid back in her laps and in the next second he had already slept off.

Maya didn't know how to leave so she just waited for a while, just then the door to the room flew open turning around Ariana stood at the entrance staring daggers at Maya, her eyes was red with rage, if looks could kill she would have killed Maya already. Ariana couldn't take it she was losing it and she was definitely going to do something no one expects.
