Chapter 40

The weekend had slipped away too fast. Monday crept in before Kairen was ready for it.

"Rise up!!!!!" Amara's voice blurted out from the alarm resting on the drawer beside Kairen's bed. Kairen had recorded a snippet of Amara crashing out, and for some reason he thought that was the best morning alarm ever.

"Rise u—"

Kairen lazily shut the alarm off, still lying on the bed. "Shut up," he fired back at the alarm before sitting up. His hand ran through his hair; the bandage wrapped around his head had fallen loose from the way he'd tossed and turned all night. He looked toward the mirror and caught a glimpse of his own reflection. He sighed in dissatisfaction.

The room was cozy—half disarranged, half intact. Kairen looked around as if trying to figure out what made him uneasy. Was it the clothes tossed carelessly across the floor?

It wasn't even the room that was the main problem.
