In the darkness, a large white dog ran swiftly through the forest, its nose twitching as it tracked something.
An Yan, Hiruko, and Sakumo followed close behind, sticking to the dog's path. Danzo was hidden somewhere in the shadows.
Konoha had many tracking-type ninja, but it was overkill to use them to track a mere Chunin from a commoner family.
So, when Danzo received the mission, Hiruzen had only assigned him a ninja hound to lead the way. Danzo wasn't happy about it, but he didn't say anything.
The three of them and the dog moved rapidly through the night. Suddenly, the dog stopped. It sniffed the air and then raised its paw in a peculiar gesture.
An Yan, having maxed out his theoretical knowledge, recognized the hand sign from the ninja code. It meant multiple enemies ahead.
They all stopped. An Yan placed his finger on the ground, closed his eyes, and began to sense. His chakra spread out like ripples, and information flowed back to him.
Trees, birds, animals, and ninja... one, two, three...
"Found them. Seven kilometers ahead. Thirteen ninja. Judging by their chakra levels, four Chunin and nine Genin."
An Yan opened his eyes and reported his findings.
What he didn't say was, Damn it, that dog Danzo didn't follow us. He was afraid of affecting Hiruko's morale.
Sakumo was a little excited. He hadn't yet had a chance to cut down a Chunin.
Hiruko, on the other hand, was nervous. Weren't they supposed to be after just one Chunin? How did thirteen of them suddenly appear?
Seeing that An Yan had located the enemy, the white dog nodded and headed back towards Konoha. It was just a trained dog, not a combatant.
An Yan watched the dog leave, then turned to Sakumo. "Four Chunin. How many can you handle?"
Sakumo smiled. "I can take them all."
An Yan rolled his eyes. "Of course you can. I think you could probably kill them all by yourself. But we're here to gain combat experience. You have to let us have a go."
Hiruko chimed in, "One Chunin each. Brother Sakumo, you'll have to take on two. The Genin are easy kills."
An Yan looked at Hiruko in surprise. You want to take on a Chunin? Can you handle it?
Hiruko got angry and glared at him. "I've made incredible progress this past year! Don't underestimate me!"
An Yan reserved his judgment.
After a brief discussion, they decided to launch a surprise attack.
They moved closer, using the cover of the trees and the night, until they were about seventy or eighty meters away.
They couldn't get any closer; there were lookouts.
An Yan quietly raised his bow, sensed again to confirm there was no one else, and then fired four arrows in quick succession.
The four lookouts in two different locations fell silent, asleep forever. Youth is wonderful indeed.
The three of them continued to advance. The enemy ninja probably hadn't expected Konoha's pursuit to be so fast; they were still eating by the campfire.
Most of them wore the forehead protector of Amegakure. It made sense. Only a relatively strong smaller village like Amegakure would dare to accept rogue ninja from the five great nations, especially one located in such a sensitive area.
If An Yan remembered correctly, the current leader of Amegakure was Hanzo the Salamander. Of course, he probably hadn't earned that title yet, but his strength was undeniable, which likely gave Amegakure a great deal of confidence.
An Yan squinted. He saw the Konoha rogue ninja, Nighthawk, holding the Sword of the Thunder God and talking to the Amegakure ninja.
Without hesitation, An Yan fired nine arrows, one for each of the remaining ninja.
Four of the Genin didn't react in time and were killed by an arrow to the head. The remaining five dodged and became enraged.
The leader immediately used a signature Amegakure ninjutsu.
Raining Senbon.
Senbon rained down on An Yan, glinting coldly. They were all poisoned; a single hit would be fatal for an ordinary ninja.
An ordinary ninja would have no time to defend against this attack; it was incredibly fast.
An Yan immediately entered his Focus state, activating bullet time. His hands flew through the seals, and he slapped the ground. "Earth Style: Earth Wall!"
In his focused state, the earth wall appeared almost instantly.
The Raining Senbon lacked the power to penetrate it.
The enemy ninja immediately tried to surround him, only to find the area behind the wall empty.
The Amegakure leader knew something was wrong and was about to shout a warning.
A brilliant white light flashed. Sakumo moved with incredible speed from east to west, cutting down three men with a single slash—two Genin and one Chunin.
The Amegakure leader cried out in grief and charged at Sakumo with his sword.
Sakumo leaped back, creating distance, preparing to fight the leader one-on-one.
The remaining two Chunin cautiously leaped into the trees, away from the ground. Since An Yan had shown his proficiency with Earth Style, it was the right move.
However, Hiruko suddenly appeared from above the trees and hit one of them with a Rasengan. The ninja was sent spinning away, clearly not dead.
Hiruko remembered An Yan's lesson: if you're hit by a Rasengan and you're not in pieces, you're probably still alive. The ninja world is full of last-minute defensive jutsu. Can't be careless.
Seeing the man fly away, Hiruko didn't hesitate to follow up with several shuriken.
The shuriken hit the target with a metallic clang. Hiruko sighed at his bad luck.
The other ninja, the Konoha rogue Nighthawk, was already roaring and swinging the Sword of the Thunder God at Hiruko.
"Don't get cocky, kid!"
But Hiruko ignored him and leaped towards the ninja who had been hit by the Rasengan. A direct hit from a Rasengan, even with a defensive jutsu, would cause some internal damage. He had to finish him off while he was injured.
Being ignored, Nighthawk's expression became even more ferocious. He chased after Hiruko.
But just as he was in mid-air, with no way to change his trajectory, three arrows flew towards him, blocking his escape. They were aimed perfectly at his flight path. With no way to dodge, Nighthawk curled his body and used the Sword of the Thunder God to slash one of the arrows. Poisonous gas immediately spread from it.
