Chapter 30 - Chapter 30: Mission Rank Upgraded

Nighthawk landed on the ground. He no longer had time to worry about the Amegakure ninja who had been hit by the Rasengan. Although he had held his breath in time, the poison was a new concoction developed by An Yan after studying pharmacology. Skin contact caused an unbearable itch and would lead to skin ulcers, greatly affecting a ninja's combat ability.

Nighthawk was in agony. His whole body itched uncontrollably, and scratching only made it worse. He couldn't stand it. After only a few moments, he dropped the Sword of the Thunder God and rolled on the ground, begging for mercy.

An Yan remained hidden. It was his first time using this poison, and he wasn't sure of its exact effects. This man was a suitable test subject.

Soon, Nighthawk's pleas for mercy turned into pleas for death. But An Yan never appeared. Nighthawk couldn't take it anymore and let go of the explosive tag in his hand.

The tag detonated, and Nighthawk was blown to smithereens.

An Yan finally emerged. He first retrieved the Sword of the Thunder God, then sealed Nighthawk's head in a scroll. After tucking both into his ninja tool pouch, he headed towards Hiruko.

As expected, the Chunin had suffered internal injuries from the Rasengan. The high-speed movements during his fight with Hiruko had caused his organs to rupture, and he had died. The fight had taken a lot out of Hiruko, though.

Seeing that Hiruko was okay, An Yan rushed over to Sakumo.

The Amegakure leader was much stronger than an ordinary Chunin. In Konoha, he would have been at least a Special Jonin, on the level of Hayate Gekko. Coincidentally, he was also a swordsman, the same type of ninja as Sakumo. And since he was older and physically stronger, Sakumo was having a very difficult fight.

That is, until An Yan arrived.

An Yan didn't attack. He just stood in a tree with his bow, occasionally drawing an arrow and aiming it vaguely at the Amegakure leader. This disrupted his rhythm and made him feel constantly on edge.

With the pressure reduced, Sakumo used his stronger opponent as a whetstone. Their fight became faster and more intense, the sound of clashing blades echoing through the air.

When Hiruko arrived, the Amegakure leader, who had been suppressing the urge to flee, finally broke. Damn it, what kind of teammates are these? They can't even handle two kids.

In that moment of distraction, Sakumo seized the opportunity, saw an opening, and slit his throat.

Blood spurted out. The Amegakure leader clutched his wound and, with a look of longing, fell to the ground, dead.

An Yan walked over and sealed his body, planning to take it back to the Analysis Division to see if they could get anything useful out of it.

After killing the enemy, Sakumo breathed a sigh of relief, stumbled back a few steps, and sat down on a tree root.

An Yan handed him a water flask with a smile. "Didn't you say you were going to fight all thirteen, Brother Sakumo? How are you so tired after just one?"

Sakumo rolled his eyes. "Who knew this guy was so strong? But it seems my sword still isn't fast enough. I need to train more when I get back."

Hiruko asked curiously, "Everyone's dead. Why isn't Teacher Danzo here yet? Did he go back?"

An Yan sighed. "Teacher Danzo never came. I knew it when I used my sensory jutsu earlier, but I didn't say anything because I was worried it would affect morale."

Hiruko's expression changed. "How could Teacher Danzo do that?"

An Yan spread his hands helplessly. "You have to rely on yourself, understand, Hiruko? Don't always depend on others. When it really matters, you can't count on them."

Sakumo chimed in, "Teacher Danzo is the type who sees ninja as tools. In his eyes, we're probably just tools too."

An Yan clapped his hands. Sakumo had hit the nail on the head. At the end of the day, Danzo and Hiruzen were different people. Danzo saw ninja as nothing more than tools, whether they were his own subordinates or other Konoha ninja. Completing the mission was the most important thing; he didn't care if his subordinates died.

Fortunately, Tobirama was still alive, so Danzo wouldn't dare to go too far. But once Tobirama was gone, who knows what kind of trouble he would cause.

An Yan was even secretly looking forward to it. With Danzo's personality, maybe he would one day kill his own teacher—it was a Konoha tradition, after all. Or maybe he would do something so outrageous that Tobirama would have to kill him for the greater good. A master-student showdown... just thinking about it was exciting.

Hiruko lowered his head, dejected.

An Yan put an arm around him.

"Don't overthink it. The most important thing is to get stronger. Only when you have strength will people listen to you."

Sakumo nodded. This An Yan's way of thinking is even more mature than mine. Is this what it means to be a genius?

The three of them rested for a bit, then looted the bodies, taking all the ninja tools and explosive tags. An Yan even found a ninjutsu scroll containing the famous Amegakure technique—Raining Senbon.

It was a jutsu that used an umbrella to attack with senbon. An Yan felt it suited his tastes. If nothing else, fighting with an umbrella was very elegant.

An Yan immediately learned the technique. After trying it once with the Amegakure ninja's umbrella, he decided it was too ugly. He would make his own ninja umbrella when he got back to Konoha.

After packing everything up, they rushed back to the village to report the mission.

The Konoha mission hall was manned 24/7. An Yan submitted the sealing scrolls containing the rogue ninja's head and the Amegakure ninja's body. The receptionist, after confirming the number of enemy ninja and that An Yan wasn't lying, upgraded their mission evaluation from B-rank to A-rank.

Now all they had to do was go home and wait for further notice.

The ninjas in the Analysis Division would be working overtime again, using their jutsu to extract information from the bodies. The sooner they did it, the more information they could get. The longer they waited, the harder it would be to retrieve anything from the deceased's brain.

The three of them left the mission hall, high-fived each other for completing their first A-rank mission, and then went their separate ways, yawning.

It was late. An Yan went home, took a shower, and went straight to bed. He was still growing; he couldn't let lack of sleep affect his future height.
