Chapter 20 - Ch 20: Protection at a Price - Part 4

"Sir, for now, please just accompany us to the hospital. Keeping the patient stable is our most important objective. As someone who has been imprinted on, it would help if you remain close and provide your pheromones."

The doctor was quick to point out what he needed.

Usually, I wouldn't have paid any attention to these things, but this time, I felt a little responsible.

After all, I could have ended the incident before it even took place. But because I hesitated, this ended up happening.

"I'll cooperate. Where do you want me to be—?"

I asked in a quick voice as I got out of the way of the working people. The people gave me a grateful look for my cooperation before the female medic quickly pressed on the passed-out alpha's wound.

"Just sit at the side of the ambulance. There is no need for you to do anything specific or anything."

The female assured me, and I did as I was asked to.

We reached the hospital in barely 10 minutes, but the whole ride felt like an eternity to me. I kept looking at the unconscious alpha, then outside, and back at the alpha again until the medic told me that I could exit.

I got out of the medical van, and the alpha was rushed to the medical room to get the bullet out.

Half an hour later, the doctor came out, and he looked confused and surprised at the same time.

I jumped to my feet to quickly get a report from the doctor.

"How's he, doctor? Is he fine—?"

I asked in a hushed voice. I wanted to know what happened to the alpha, but at the same time, a part of me did not want to know what happened either.

My urgency made the doctor even more confused, but he did reply to me.

"Ah, the patient? Are you sure he was hit by the bullet? He did lose a lot of blood, but we could not find the bullet in his leg, only the hole. The other side does not show any signs of the bullet having exited either."

The doctor asked, and my brain quickly made up the possible reason behind this.

"The person who shot the patient was a hunter. Maybe he used his ability?"

Understanding dawned on the doctor's face once he heard my explanation.

"Ah, that could be possible. I did not take that into account."

It was understandable why the doctor had not thought of this possibility since he was a civilian working in a civilian hospital. Most hunters kept to their own community, so there were hardly any cases of such conflicts.

And even when there were, both parties were usually taken to the hunter hospital.

"The patient is stable now, so you can head inside and talk to him. Also, can you tell me who will pay the bill for the patient? We can wait two days for payment. If you're short on money, you can apply to the Hunter Association to provide financial aid."

The doctor wasted no time in showing his true colors, and I sighed and followed behind him.

Once the paperwork was sorted out and I signed the form asking for financial aid from the Hunter Association, I headed to the unconscious alpha's room.

He was just waking up from his sleep, and his drooping eyes made him look even more like a puppy than usual.

Those eyes brightened up as soon as they saw me, and I hurried inside.

"Y-You did not abandon me—? I thought I wouldn't see you again."

The alpha spoke with such joy that even I felt taken aback. I had never seen anyone outside life-threatening situations so glad to see my face.

Finally, I found my voice and spoke up.

"Did you think I was an asshole? You got injured protecting me. Anyway, don't do anything reckless like this next time. Your own life should come first in any situation."

The more I spoke, the more the alpha smiled and tilted his head. The blank expression on his face told me that he was not hearing anything I was saying.

Sigh

"Anyway, what is your name? And where do you live? I will call someone to come and pick you up if you tell me your home number."

I asked, trying to help the alpha out.

But instead of answering me, the alpha just frowned before he looked away. Before I could ask what happened, he spoke again.

"I-I don't know. I don't recall anything suddenly. Can I go with you? You make me feel safe."

The alpha asked in a tense voice. At that moment, he sounded like a kid, asking for reassurance.

But as much as I wanted to help him, I was in no position to help him out either. After all, I was a freeloader at someone else's house as well.

"Sorry, but I think that's going to be a little difficult. I am not in a position to look after anyone else right now. You should go home—"

"I can be useful to you! I promise, I will do anything you ask of me. I can even be bait for you if you want me to be. I'm sturdy, so I can save you."

The alpha was begging, and his eyes looked at my face as he spoke.

I was getting more and more uncomfortable, and I really wanted to leave. But the part of my brain that felt responsible for this situation told me to help the alpha out.

"For now, you should rest. Let me make a call, and I will tell you what we should do—"

"Don't go. Please don't go."

The alpha begged, now tugging my clothes.

'Huh—! When did I walk all the way over to the bed? I don't recall moving—'

"I-If you want to make a call, can't you make it in this room? Or, take me with you to make one. I don't want to let you go alone."

The alpha begged, and he wasted no time to wrap his arms around my middle. Now I felt truly trapped, both physically and emotionally.

Before I could leave the room, a doctor walked inside, and he looked taken aback to see a grown alpha clinging to a fragile-looking omega almost half his size.

"Do you…need some kind of help?"

The doctor asked in a worried voice, and I just sighed before looking at him.

"Do you have a phone? I need to make a call, but this alpha won't let me go. I promise I won't take long."

I asked with begging eyes for the doctor to help. But the doctor only blinked and adapted to the situation far too quickly.

"Ah, I see. So the alpha has separation anxiety. In that case, here. Use my phone to make the call that you need."

I felt a stab of irritation when the doctor did not help me break free, but instead caused me even more trouble.

But I could do nothing but accept my fate at the moment and make the call that I needed to.

Emma picked up the very next second, and her worried voice made my nerves calm down.

"Hello—! Who is it…"
