Chapter 21 - Chapter 21 A Gift for Emily

"Charlie, leave the car keys here, and go back first!"

"Okay, boss."

Once he left, it was just Luke and Emily.

At this time, the sunset glow was illuminating the western half of the sky. A handsome man and a beautiful girl were strolling under the orange-red sunset. It should have been a very romantic thing, but the girl always looked at her feet and said nothing.

"Why aren't you talking? Who pissed you off?"

Emily looked up and questioned, "Have you ever considered that if the gun went off accidentally, Iben would likely die, and you would become a murderer."

Luke laughed, took out his pistol and threw it over.

"See for yourself."

Emily gripped the gun handle, her expression suddenly becoming strange.

"Fake?"

"Of course it's fake. I'm a law-abiding citizen. How could I use a real gun to force a confession? That's illegal, okay?"

Emily threw the gun to the ground in anger.

"Why didn't you tell me earlier?"

"Let me tell you how to act. Acting? Of course you have to put your whole heart into it. Don't you think your performance just now was great, especially the moment when the gunshot rang out..." Luke closed his eyes and savored it carefully.

"The look of astonishment was mixed with a hint of disbelief, and his eyes revealed pity, anger, and a barely perceptible hint of bewilderment."

"Why are you so confused? Is it because of me? If I really killed someone, what would you do as the FBI? Arrest them? Or not?"

Emily gave him a blank look and turned away.

"Don't go! You haven't finished talking yet?"

Luke followed behind him and asked with a smile, "What are you going to do next?"

"What to do?"

"Of course it's Adusan! Don't you want to know if he uploaded the video? The identity of the victim? And what's behind this incident?"

Emily paused, frowned, and said, "You mean..."

Luke smiled, pointed at the other person, then pointed at himself,

"Do me a favor and let me help you."

The girl's frown deepened. "I don't understand what you're talking about. I don't need your help."

Luke shook his head slightly, as if he was dissatisfied with the girl's concealment. He walked along the stairs to the bridge bank, facing the sea breeze and looking at the Statue of Liberty in the distance. The sunset gave the goddess a layer of life color, and the clouds became her clothes. There were tall buildings in the distance and green water nearby. Several yachts passed by on the river, and the white waves they brought up became the most beautiful embellishment.

"So beautiful!"

Emily admired it sincerely.

Luke smiled and said in a voice that only the two of them could hear,

"As a superhuman, life in the FBI must be tough!"

Her expression was frozen in time, like the wooden Statue of Liberty.

Luke said casually, "There's no need to be so surprised! It's not a big deal."

Emily turned stiffly.

"When did you find out?"

"I knew it the first time we met."

"How is that possible?"

Luke shrugged. "To me, the FBI intranet is like my own backyard. Whenever I'm bored, I just wander in and always find something new to enjoy."

Emily was silent, and then speechless. The young man in front of her looked nonchalant, as if the FBI had really become his backyard. But Emily knew very well that the FBI's internal security system was known as the strongest defense in the world, and no one had ever escaped unscathed after an intrusion.

She brags without thinking, and really thinks she knows nothing.

"What? You don't believe it!

It's okay, you'll find out later. Speaking of which, there's something I've always been curious about. According to the FBI's personnel files, you belong to the Anomalous Affairs Division, and Roger Consius is the director of cybersecurity.

How did you become his subordinate?"

Emily's eyebrows twitched. This sentence revealed too much information, which made her doubt.

"You...you're not really going to hack into the FBI, are you?"

When she said this, the girl was extremely nervous.

"How is that possible? I was just teasing you and you believed it. Am I, Luke Xiao, that kind of person?"

Emily blinked her beautiful big eyes, her head full of question marks. The longer she interacted with Luke, the more she couldn't understand him. His thoughts were like clouds in the sky, ever-changing, flying around, sometimes bringing surprises, but more often than not, leaving people baffled.

"Luke, as your friend, I must remind you that hacking into the FBI is a serious crime. You must not do this under any circumstances."

"Okay, I got it."

Luke replied impatiently, "With the FBI's broken system, they can't even find me if I go in to take a shit."

"Continuing with the previous question, how did you end up working for Roger? He's a notorious jerk."

Emily whispered, "The FBI has an unwritten rule that any incident involving a superhuman requires the assistance of personnel from the Abnormal Investigations Unit to avoid unnecessary trouble."

"So Roger Consius is not your direct supervisor."

Emily nodded, and said,

"Don't ask anymore. We have a confidentiality agreement and cannot disclose internal information to the outside world."

"Okay! Let's change the subject." Luke turned and stared at her. "What are you going to do in the future?"

Emily asked, puzzled, "What do you mean?"

Luke sighed softly, "The Unusual Incidents Unit is the FBI's most unique division. Most of its members are humans with superpowers, specializing in responding to sudden, unnatural events. Their missions are highly dangerous, and the casualty rate is also high. But strangely, even after decades of existence, the director and deputy director positions have always been held by ordinary people, and no superhuman has ever been promoted."

Having said that, he paused deliberately, and slowly said in the other party's silent expression,

"I don't know why they do this. When I think about it, it's nothing more than the word trust. These two words are very deadly. They can trigger a series of chain reactions, such as discrimination, identity, isolation, etc., and in serious cases, it will affect one's own life safety."

"Emily, are you sure you want to survive in this environment?"

The girl said with a grim expression, "I won't be a traitor, and I certainly won't betray the FBI. If you dare say another word, don't blame me for being rude."

"Who wants you to be a traitor? What are you thinking? I'm just asking you if you're ready to stay in this line of work."

Emily looked directly into Luke's eyes, her expression serious and solemn.

"Although the FBI has many shortcomings, its essence is good. It protects many people. I will not leave."

"I knew you would say that, so I decided to give you a gift."

"Gift?"

Luke responded, his expression turning serious. "Find out the mastermind behind the murder of women, expose the dark side of Gotham City, and destroy the drug trafficking network in Metropolis. Emily, all three points of the credit will go to you. You will become the first female superhero in history, the face of the FBI, and a legend in the legal community. This is the gift I have prepared for you."

Emily opened her eyes wide and said in disbelief,

"What on earth are you going to do?"
