Chapter 13 - Good Luck

After making my way to the library and getting the book I was looking for, my first day at this insane academy came to a close. At long last, I get to sleep.

Checking my tablet I see that my dorm room number is 220. They have us segregated; the higher class, the higher floor, and the first floor are shops. I remember the president saying something about separating the half-breeds into an entirely different building, but I was too tired to care, so I continue down the halls.

My new roommate can be heard through the walls, I'm not sure if they're just loud or if the walls are thin.

"I'll make everything look nice for when my new roommate arrives, thus setting the standard of cleanliness. It says his name is Saint. First impressions are important, so I have to appear well-mannered yet strict. But not too strict, a little intimidation, but not scary, playful yet not childish."

Well, at least he seems like a decent guy; as long as he's not messy or obnoxious, it should be fin-

After opening the door, I see my new roommate on the bed; the room is a mess; both his pants are down, and there's a lampshade on his head.

"...I apologize, I don't believe I'm the person you were expecting," I state turning back around, beginning to leave.

"Wait, wait! You're my new roommate, Taint, right? I mean Saint!"

I'm unsure if he is mocking my name or if he's just nervous. "And you must be Luck."

"Yes, I'm sorry about my appearance. I was dressed, and the room was clean, but I tripped and tried to grab..."

His monologue begins to mush together as I begin to wonder if I can change bunkmates. "Don't sweat it... but would you mind pulling up your pants?" I question.

Luck looks down and blushes and pulls them up.

"Well, it's nice to meet you, Luck." I put my hand out to shake.

He hesitates for a moment, looking at my hand as though this is the most important moment of his life. He meets my handshake, and it feels like a dead fish.

"You didn't... You know... use this hand." I question.

Luck seems ashamed that I even considered the thought, looking down as if he's regretted every life choice he's ever made. "I didn't!"

Attempting to rush to the bed, I'm stopped as he insists that we sit down and talk as new suite mates. It felt as though my eye bags were about to reach the floor.

He sits across from me with a newfound determination to retake control. "If we are going to be living with each other, I want to set some rules first-"

"If the other person is in the room, you have to keep your clothes on." I state with a neutral stare.

"Obviously!"

"...Obviously." I give him a sarcastic response.

"Okay! I get it! Rule two, keep clean. We can shift schedules on who cleans and dusts."

"Sounds good."

After a grueling thirty minutes pass, he continues bumbling.

"And rule 187, we brush our teeth at 9:30, in a left-to-right motion. Followed by circles, rinse and repeat."

Attempting to stay awake, as his words were droning like a sound machine.

"Alright, I don't want to tire you, so that's enough rules for now. I'll write the rest of them down on paper."

I may have cheerfully groaned as the conversation comes to a close.

Finally free from his grasp, I inspect the room. It's a small two-bedroom with a normal-looking bathroom in a side hall.

Flopping onto the bed after a quick shower. I notice Luck has begun to write down a list of rules as he hums.

Despite my attempts to sleep, his night lamp is like a burning sun. My retina's begging for salvation.

"Would you mind lowering the brightness a bit?" I beseech.

Luck looks over at me and just now realizes how bright his light is. "Oh! Yeah, sure! I think that this lamp has a brightness setting somewhere?"

He fiddles with the light, I feel like an autopsy patient as the light becomes somehow brighter.

"Oops! That's not it."

I attempt to flee the flash bang of light by turning towards the wall, he continues to fiddle with it more. Somehow making it even brighter, killing any shadow that dared to enter.

Managing to finally fall asleep after I used my power to buy a sleep mask.
