With the last reporter finally out the door, Draconis stretched, looking every bit the picture of lazy satisfaction.
"About time," he sighed. "That circus is finally over."
Mai Sakurajima, still reeling from everything that had happened, felt like she was floating in a dream. Was it really over? Had that strange affliction truly vanished? Could she finally step back into the world she'd left behind?
Draconis caught her hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. "Let's head home and double-check, just to be sure."
He led her toward her house. At first, Mai didn't quite get what he meant by "confirming." But it clicked soon enough.
All along the way, people recognized Mai instantly. Some stared, others reached for their phones, and a few even tried to snap photos—especially when they saw Draconis holding her hand.
Draconis handled it with his usual devil-may-care attitude, tossing out mass memory wipes like confetti.
Mai watched, half amused, half exasperated. Wasn't this a bit much? The power to rewrite common sense was terrifying—and Draconis wielded it with zero restraint. Wasn't there supposed to be some kind of rule?
Back at her apartment, Draconis finally got serious.
"Alright, time for the real contract."
Mai blushed, the word "contract" now forever linked to her stolen first kiss. She tried to keep her cool. "Didn't we already sign one? If we do it again, you owe me another wish, right?"
Draconis laughed, shaking his head. "Trying to hustle me, Mai? That's a new low—even for you."
She smirked. "Learned from the best, didn't I?"
He put on a mock-serious face. "Hey, I'm a demon. Cunning is part of the job description. Calling it 'hustling' is just unfair."
She gave up arguing. With Draconis, logic was a lost cause. She'd get her revenge another day.
With Mai's agreement, Draconis began the ritual. Following Rias's careful instructions, he summoned a magic circle, its lines glowing with power, and invited Mai to step inside.
She did so, feeling the air shift around her. As the circle blazed to life, both she and Draconis sensed a strange new bond forming—an invisible thread tying them together.
Draconis reached for the contract's price, and suddenly, his magic surged like boiling water, flooding his veins with raw power. The intensity caught him off guard.
He'd expected a boost, but this was on another level. Something felt… off. Or maybe, just unexpectedly potent.
Still, more power was always welcome. Draconis steadied himself, guiding the torrent, letting it reshape him from the inside out.
With a rush of air, black wings unfurled from his back. The room filled with swirling currents as Draconis rose, weightless, hovering above the floor.
His consciousness slipped away, plunging into that familiar inner world.
Once again, the black citadel appeared before him—the fortress housing his Sacred Gear, the Aegis of the Virtuous Monarch.
This time, the city seemed to pulse with anticipation, as if it were eager to awaken.
Draconis poured his magic into it, feeling the energy rush forward, unstoppable.
A massive bronze bell atop the watchtower thundered, its sound reverberating through the city's walls. The entire citadel trembled, a wave of force echoing within.
Startled, Draconis quickly suppressed the pulse before it could spiral out of control, barely containing the destructive energy.
In just those few seconds, nearly all his magic was spent. He cut off the flow, panting.
He understood now—the city was his to command, but only barely. For now, his strength was just enough to keep it in check.
He wondered about the connection between this fortress and the Aegis itself…
Draconis opened his eyes, the contract's price fully absorbed. He felt stronger, sharper, more alive.
This contract was a goldmine. With Mai as his anchor, he could keep growing—maybe even earn a noble title from a Demon King one day, rise to High-Class Devil, and claim real power.
Mai smiled, sensing the change. "Did it work?"
Draconis nodded, grinning. "Perfectly. If you ever need me, just call through the contract. I'll be there."
Mai marveled at the magic. A demon boyfriend, available on demand—she couldn't help but find it oddly comforting.
Just then, her phone buzzed.
Mai glanced down, her expression darkening. The caller ID read "Manager"—her mother.
Draconis caught a glimpse and frowned, remembering how Mai's mother had once forgotten her own daughter. Their relationship was complicated, to say the least.
"Not going to answer?" he asked gently.
After a moment's hesitation, he added, "Some things are better said than left unsaid, you know?"
Mai's eyes softened. Draconis squeezed her hand, smiling. "It's late, and I need to get back to school. I'll leave you two to talk. If you need me, you know how to reach me."
She nodded, taking a deep breath.
Satisfied, Draconis let go, heading for the door. He glanced back, saw Mai answering her phone, and closed the door quietly behind him.
Outside, Draconis breathed a sigh of relief.
First contract: complete. Time to share the good news with Rias and the others.
He'd skipped class that morning—had Rias covered for him? He'd have to check.
As he walked toward the bus stop, he couldn't help but grumble.
When would he finally unlock teleportation? Demon powers, and he still had to ride the bus and pedal a bike like a regular kid. Some demon he was.
