Chapter 4 - Raccoon City Part 3

Saki stirred awake at around noon when she could no longer ignore the bright rays of sunlight shining through the walls of her tent. With a groggy sigh, she rubbed her eyes and sat up, stretching her stiff arms before climbing out of her sleeping bag. She packed up quickly, leaving her tent and stowing both away neatly in her inventory with practiced ease.

Once free of the morning drowsiness, she pulled out her camp stove and started boiling some water for oatmeal. As the water heated up, she crossed her arms and decided to finally check out the shop, since she had a decent amount of cash after last night's hunt.

She scrolled through the shop with a curious but cautious look, her brow furrowing slightly as she skimmed through the lists. After a few minutes, she determined that it contained normal items like food, drinks, clothes, medicine, weapons, and bullets. But then her eyes widened a little when she noticed it also contained items from Resident Evil and Oneechanbara.

Right now the only things she could actually afford were normal weapons or healing items.

Then she said, frowning in mild annoyance, "So it looks like the more worlds I go to and characters I obtain, the more items will be available in the shop. That's cool and all… but did he have to make the prices the same as in the game? Even the basic healing item from Oneechanbara is out of my price range! And just looking at the stronger weapons from Resident Evil makes me feel poor." She let out a frustrated little huff and pinched the bridge of her nose.

She spent eight bucks buying some eggs and bacon from the shop and closed it out with a resigned shrug. Then she set to work, pulling the food from her inventory and cooking it on her camping stove. The smell of sizzling bacon soon mixed with the warmth of scrambled eggs and oatmeal, and once everything was done, she sat down and dug into breakfast with relief.

After finishing, she leaned back and muttered to herself, "Well, I doubt I'll find any decent hunting within the city right now since we're still in the early stages of the outbreak, so I might as well head out to the Arklay Mountains and see if I can find any undead." Her lips curled into a faint smirk, though her tone carried a dry edge as she added, "I'm pretty sure the members of S.T.A.R.S. never went back and handled the zombie dogs that are still stomping around in the woods. Honestly, super irresponsible… but whatever."

Saki spent the afternoon running through the Arklay Mountains, her shoes pounding against the forest floor as she cut down packs of snarling undead Dobermans. Each one lunged with snapping jaws and glowing eyes, but her blades and arrows struck true. All in all, she managed to find and kill ten of them, finally completing the first sub-mission.

As the last body dropped, her watch gave a sharp ding, and glowing text scrolled across the screen:

Sub Mission 2 Complete

Reward: $500, New Perk: S.T.A.R.S., New Weapon: Hot Dagger

Sub Mission 5 Added: Kill 100 Zombies

Reward: $1000, New Perk: Undead Slayer

Familiarity has reached 30%

Stats Updated, And New Skill Unlocked

Saki wiped the sweat from her brow with the back of her hand, breathing heavily. She wanted to check out her updated status, but something about her new perk gave her a bad feeling. Grimacing, she tapped the details first—and, of course, she was right.

S.T.A.R.S.: Provides increased accuracy with all firearms. A permanent 2-point increase to Endurance, Intelligence, and Luck. But gives 25% increase in hostility from all Zombies and 100% increase in hostility from Nemesis.

Saki groaned, running her fingers through her damp hair in frustration. Then she muttered aloud, "Fuck… now I have to fight him. Well, at least now I have a way to keep him from following Jill. Just hope I'll be strong enough when the time comes." Her expression hardened as she checked her status screen.

Overall, Saki was satisfied with the increase in her abilities. With a small nod of approval, she returned to town to get ready for tonight's wave of zombies. After scouting around, she found a decent rooftop and continued her routine of practicing different techniques to obtain new skills. She strapped the kunai set to her right thigh and began hurling them at a makeshift target, each throw sharper and more accurate than the last.

But she noticed something strange. Every so often, the kunai would vanish into nothing… yet, just like their name implied, she never ran out of them. A grin tugged at her lips.

After a few hours of practice, she heard the familiar ding, and her watch displayed:

New Skill Acquired: Throwing

Accuracy and Damage with throwing weapons increased

Excited, Saki grabbed another kunai and hurled it with all her focus at an undamaged target. The result made her whistle—it didn't just pierce the wooden board, it tore straight through it. Satisfied, she stretched her arms, rolled her shoulders, and got ready for her nightly patrol.

Once out and about in the city, however, her mood soured. She found only a handful of zombies—five in total—barely enough to break a sweat. Like that, day two passed uneventfully. The third, fourth, fifth, and sixth days were much the same, with no real threats. She used the downtime for training instead, honing her body and mind until she acquired new skills: Firearms, Unarmed Combat, and Lockpicking.

It wasn't until night seven that something finally broke the monotony.

While moving along the rooftops, Saki spotted Mayor Warren's daughter heading toward the police station. Frowning, she dropped down and intercepted her, steering her instead toward the train station where the U.B.C.S. was already gathering survivors. By doing so, she prevented the girl from falling into Irons' hands. Saki didn't remember if it had been Irons or a zombie that killed her in the original events, but better safe than sorry.

From there, she made her way to Kendo's gun shop. She explained the evacuation plan and, after a tense conversation, managed to convince him to take his daughter and go. Thankfully, he listened.

Saki exhaled with relief and said aloud, "And with that, Sub Mission 1 is halfway complete. All that remains is Brad… and getting the train out of here safely." She paused, tapping her chin in thought. "But now that I think about it, why wasn't Marvin or any of the other cops on the list? Or hell, what about Annette? Oh well, now that I don't have any time-sensitive things to worry about, I can chill for a bit."

With that, Saki wandered the city, collecting weapons and ammo wherever she could. As the night of the eighth day approached, she slipped silently into a certain person's apartment.

---

Jill woke up to something unexpected—the sound of her shower running. She blinked in confusion, sitting up in bed. That was odd she thought. It definitely hadn't been on when she went to sleep. Her instincts kicking in, Jill crept through her apartment, careful not to make a sound. On the way, she grabbed a knife from the kitchen, gripping it tight as she prepared to storm the bathroom.

But before she could move, the door opened. Out stepped a Japanese teenager standing in front of her completely nude without any shame. Towel drying her long black hair casually as if she owned the place. The girl's eyes flicked toward Jill, and she said smoothly, "Oh, you're up."

Jill's grip tightened on her knife. "Who the hell are you? And how did you get in my apartment?"

The girl shrugged nonchalantly. "The name's Saki, and I picked the lock."

Jill narrowed her eyes, her voice sharp. "That's illegal, young lady."

Saki burst out laughing, amused by the seriousness of the response. "The whole city has gone to hell, and you're worried about laws?"

Jill's eyes widened slightly. "What do you mean the city's gone to hell?"

Saki tilted her head, looking genuinely confused. "Don't you know? This town's been slowly taken over by the undead for the last eight days. Now it's completely overrun."

Jill's face went pale, her expression filled with shock. "What? How? What about the police?"

Saki crossed her arms, giving her a grim look. "The ones that didn't flee are dead. Military isn't coming. The only people still defending the town are Umbrella mercenaries—and I'm 90% sure that's just to make Umbrella look like the good guys."

"Shit… shit, shit…" Jill muttered, pacing. "I was so focused on laying low that I didn't pay attention to the outside. I didn't think it would get this bad this fast."

Saki's eyes drifted over the empty pizza boxes scattered around the apartment, and she raised a brow. "You haven't left this apartment in a while, have you?"

Jill scowled. "I've had people watching me, kid. Outside wasn't really that safe. Now, are you going to get dressed, or just stand there bare-ass naked in my kitchen?"

Saki smirked, tilting her head. "Why? Are you embarrassed? I'm not."

Jill groaned, rubbing her temples in frustration. "Just put something on, damn it."

Still chuckling, Saki went back to the bathroom and returned a few minutes later in her usual outfit, and a bag slung over her shoulder. She carried her bow in hand because she didn't want to bother explaining to a cop why she had a sword.

Jill raised an eyebrow at the sight. "Why choose that and not a gun?"

"I've got guns," Saki said with a shrug, "but unlike arrows, I can't retrieve bullets. It's better to conserve ammo until I really need to use it."

Jill nodded thoughtfully. "Makes sense." She began gathering her own gear, strapping on her holster and loading her pistol. Then she glanced back. "Now, I've got a couple questions. First, why'd you break into my apartment? And second, what's the situation outside?"

Saki smiled faintly but lied smoothly. "Well, I didn't know it was your apartment. I just wanted a shower, so I picked this place at random." Then her expression turned serious. "And as for the outside… about 90% of the citizens are now undead. Buildings are on fire, and no one's coming to save us."

Jill nodded grimly, jaw tightening. "Alright. Let's head out. You any good with that?"

Saki smirked, gesturing at her bow. "I'm still alive, aren't I?"

"Fair point," Jill admitted, then motioned toward the door. "Let's go."

But before either of them could step out, the phone rang. Jill moved to answer it, but Saki grabbed her wrist sharply. Jill turned to her with a questioning look.

Saki's eyes narrowed, her voice low. "Do you feel that?"

Jill froze, concentrating. Then she felt it—the faint rumble of the building shaking beneath their feet, followed by the distant roar of something monstrous. Her blood ran cold.

"Something's coming," Saki said grimly. Without hesitation, she yanked Jill toward the door.

The two bolted down the hall, and just as they did, a deafening crash echoed behind them as something smashed through the walls of Jill's apartment. They picked up their pace, hearts pounding. Saki kicked open the door of an apartment across the hallway, and she and Jill sprinted straight to the window.

Saki kicked out the window and the two climbed out onto the fire escape, the rusted metal groaning under their weight. Then Saki, remembering what Nemesis did in the game, grabbed Jill and, without explaining, leaped off the fire escape just in time for Nemesis to bust through the wall and grab nothing but air.

Mid-fall, Jill screamed, her voice sharp and panicked, and Saki grabbed the rain gutter, sliding down it with Jill clinging tightly to her. The metal rattled beneath their grip, sparks of pain shooting through Saki's arms, but she held firm. When they reached the ground, Jill panted heavily, eyes wide with adrenaline, and said, "Never do that again!"

Saki grinned sweetly, brushing off her hands as if the stunt was nothing, and said, "No promises. Now let's go before that thing—"

Behind them came a thunderous crash, the ground trembling. Out of the swirling dust stepped the hulking figure of Nemesis, his towering frame cloaked in black leather straps and grotesque flesh, roaring with inhuman rage: "STAAAAAAAARS!"

Jill instinctively drew her pistol, aiming with both hands steady despite the fear flashing in her eyes, but Saki grabbed her arm and hissed, "No time! Come on!" She dragged Jill away.

As they ran, they heard someone shouting ahead: "Jill! This way, up ahead!"

They saw a man waving frantically. In a panic, Jill shouted, "Brad! Run! Something's after us!"

Brad's face was pale, sweat dripping down his forehead. "I know! Through here!" he said, leading them past a fence crowded with infected. The undead snarled and shoved against the chain links, and as the three passed, the fence gave way with a screech of metal. Rotten hands reached for them as the infected spilled through, shambling toward them, with Nemesis not far behind, his heavy boots pounding like war drums.

Once inside the bar, Saki reacted fast, grabbing Brad by the arm and yanking him back just before a zombie lunged, teeth snapping. She pulled an arrow from her quiver and, without hesitation, thrust it into the zombie's skull. The creature crumpled to the floor as Jill forced the door closed, slamming it with all her weight.

Brad exhaled shakily, his shoulders dropping in relief, and looked at Saki. "Thank you."

Saki smirked faintly, her chest still rising and falling from the sprint. "No problem. Now bar the door before the big fucker catches up."

Jill and Brad quickly shoved furniture against the entrance, their movements hurried and desperate. Meanwhile, Saki pulled out the hunting rifle and loaded it with a deliberate click-clack.

Jill glanced back at her, eyes narrowing. "Whoa… where'd you get that?"

Saki casually replied, "From the zoo. They only had lethal weapons, by the way."

Jill muttered under her breath, frustration clear in her tone. "God damn it. I told everyone that place was sketchy, but did they listen? Noooo."

Brad straightened, trying to keep things moving. "Maybe we should get going, ladies."

Saki arched an eyebrow, her grip tightening on the rifle. "Or find a nice rooftop and see if the big guy can tank a shot from this."

Jill sighed, rubbing her temple with her free hand. "Normally I'd agree, but I'm pretty sure it can. Let's just run."

Saki shrugged with a half-smile and followed them out.

Brad knelt by a dead officer in the alley, grimacing as he looted a pistol off the corpse.then they made their way into the adjacent warehouse, shadows stretching long in the dim light.

Inside, they encountered an old man. He stood stubbornly in front of a container, shaking his head. "I'm not going anywhere," he snapped. He turned to climb inside, only to freeze when a bullet punched through the metal wall in front of him.

He turned back slowly to see Saki, revolver steady in her hands, her eyes cold.

"Die here and now, or potentially die out there. Your choice," Saki said flatly, her voice carrying an edge that silenced the room.

The old man snarled, his jaw tight. "You're a demented little brat." But he climbed down reluctantly and made his way toward the exit anyway.

Brad and Jill stared at Saki in shock, the weight of her words hanging in the air. As they followed the old man, Brad leaned toward Jill and muttered, "Since when did kids get so vicious? And who the hell is she?"

Jill shook her head, her expression a mix of wariness and intrigue. "Beats me. The only thing I know about her is her name's Saki. We met like thirty minutes ago."

The four made their way to the street, the smell of smoke and ash heavy in the air. Saki steered them toward the evacuation site, but Brad stopped suddenly, eyes catching on a helicopter hovering over a nearby rooftop. Its blades whipped the air into a frenzy.

"Wait—what about the chopper?" Brad asked, hope flickering in his voice.

Saki's tone was sharp, her expression grim. "No way in hell. I can't see any identifiable markings on that thing, so it most likely isn't military. And there's a high chance the government will shoot down any aircraft leaving the city to contain the infection."

The old man barked a laugh, bitter but resigned. "Why is the child the smart one? Aren't you a cop, boy? Never take a chopper. That's a quick way to get killed."

They ran again, but the ground shook with a deafening roar. Nemesis was back, bellowing: "STAAAAAAAARS!"

Jill cursed under her breath, teeth gritted. "Fucking perfect. It's back."

Ahead, a voice cut through the chaos: "You four! This way, quick!"

Looking forward, they saw a man perched on top of a car, aiming a quad-barrel RPG at Nemesis. He fired, and the rockets exploded with deafening force, engulfing Nemesis in fire and throwing nearby vehicles into a chain of explosions. Flames lit the night sky, and for a moment, the monster was kept at bay.

The five didn't waste the opening. The man—Carlos—called out, "Quick, follow me! We're evacuating survivors up ahead!"

He led them into the subway, boots pounding against the stairs as firelight flickered behind them.

Jill and Carlos immediately fell into a heated argument about umbrella after he introduced himself as they walked toward the train, their voices sharp and clipped, but Saki tuned them out, her eyes watching the shadows instead. She turned toward the old man. "How you holding up, old man?"

The old man grumbled but managed a faint, weary smile. "I'm fine… look, I'm sorry about earlier. Thanks for making me come along, kid."

Saki smirked faintly, brushing past him. "Just don't make a habit of it. I won't save your ass all the time."

As the others climbed onto the train, Jill, Brad, and Carlos talked with Mikhail, strategizing.

But Saki didn't climb aboard. Instead, she slipped away, climbing the stairs back to street level. Her heart pounded with restless energy. The night air hit her face, carrying the distant groans of the undead. She tightened her grip on her weapon, a dangerous grin tugging at her lips.

It was time to begin her undead killing spree.
